wineriescoastal dropsThey say a good (and fun) way to get a real feel fora region is to taste the wines it produces. Andfortunately we’ve got a good variety on offer. TheShoalhaven wine-growing region stretches south toDurras with 20 vineyards and 11 cellar doors to choosefrom. With its high summer rainfall, humidity and seabreezes, the region’s favourite grape is chambourcinnand other popular varieties produced here includechardonnay, verdelho, sauvignon blanc, semillon, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.Alexander Berry planted the region’s first evergrapevines at Coolangatta Estate in the 1820s andduring the 1870s, Silos Estate vines were established. Both these estates have restored their early buildings, which add a strong character to their cellar doors andtasting rooms. The first serious viticulture in the region commencedback in the 1980s with Coolangatta Estate, followed byJasper Valley Wines and Silos Estate and CambewarraEstate vines were planted in the early 1990s. Later newcellar doors were opened at Two Figs, Mountain RidgeWines, Kladis Estate, Cupitts, Nowra Hill Vineyard,Bawley Vale and Yarrawa Estate. No visit to the Shoalhaven would be complete withouta visit to at least one of our cellar doors to samplesome of the award-winning drops.10shoalhavenholidays.com.au
