cultural treasures<strong>Shoalhaven</strong>City Arts CentreA Regional Gallery of NSWThe <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> City Arts Centre is a vibrant and creativecentre that has four exhibition galleries, a galleryshop, conference and workshop rooms. Exhibitionsfeature works from national, private and regional collections,the <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> City Collection, curated exhibitions by<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> artisans and community.The <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> City Arts Centre is a proud part of theRegional Gallery Network of NSW and has exhibited worksfrom Australian and international artists such as SidneyNolan, Arthur Boyd, Robert Dickerson, Max Dupain,David Hockney and Adam Cullen, to name a few. Othersignificant exhibitions include shows held in conjunction withBundanon, the annual <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Art Society Open Art Prizeexhibition and the bi-annual Meroogal Women’s Art Prizeexhibition during September.The <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> City Art Collection has grown over the past40 years into a substantial collection containing excellentexamples of Australian art by Arthur Boyd, William Robinson,Max Dupain, David Voigt, Dennis Adams and a largecollection of late 1800s watercolours and photographs bySamuel Elyard. Of particular significance is the generousbequest of the M.G.Dingle and G.B.Hughes collection ofAustralian abstract works, collected over a period of 50years. The Arts Centre regularly has exhibitions from thecollection curated by Max Dingle.The City Collection also contains a strong regional and<strong>Shoalhaven</strong> representation including works by John Edward,Leonard Long, Suzanne Chick, Jim Birkett, Trudi Last,Paul Dimmer, 12 <strong>Shoalhaven</strong> Aboriginal linocut prints andwatercolours and drawings by war artist Clarrie Payne. TheCollection has been developed to enhance, enrich andeducate as well as stimulate awareness and appreciationof visual arts practice in contemporary Australia and the<strong>Shoalhaven</strong>.Open: Tuesday to Friday 10am–4pm; Saturday 11am–3pm12 Berry Street, Nowra(02) 4429 5444. www.shoalhavenartscentre.com.auMeroogalAmuch-loved home of four generations of womenfrom the same family, the historic house museum,Meroogal, has hundreds of stories to tell fromthe multitude of belongings and objects left byeach generation.The items on display include furniture, householdobjects, diaries, letters, scrapbooks, photographs andclothes, which give visitors a insight into a more privateworld of the family.Meroogal is a two-storey Gothic-revival weatherboardcottage, built on stone foundations, featuring verandasand balconies. The internal walls are wallpapered, theceilings are panelled and the staircase is made of cedar.The house is surrounded by a picket fence and twolarge jacaranda trees shade the garden.Since Historic Houses Trust acquired Meroogal, thegarden has been restored to its 1920s appearance withthe fences and flowerbeds being reconstructed andmany perennial and annual plants re-introduced.Open: Sat 1 – 5pm, Sun 10am – 5pm.January: Fri to Sun 10am – 5pm.
