Theevent, promoting health and fitness, started and finished at Victory LandingPark next to VASCIC.Race-day events included opening remarks by Jim Hughes, vice president,Submarines and Fleet Support, face painting, and a GreeNN “shred-it” event.“This year’s race was a huge success,” said Erin Magee (O27), co-race director.“Despite the cold and the wind, our shipbuilders and their families came out inforce. The check was presented in the name of BuzzyDarrow of Accurate Marine. Darrow was a long-timemember and corporate sponsor of the Propeller Club. Theclub was able to support the charity from net proceedsmade from the club’s annual golf tournament held onAug. 19 at the Nansemond River Golf Club in Suffolk.Mike Petters, CEO and president of <strong>Huntington</strong> <strong>Ingalls</strong><strong>Industries</strong>, visited <strong>Huntington</strong> Middle School in <strong>Newport</strong><strong>News</strong> on Nov. 1 to talk with students about the importanceof education for career readiness. Sixth-grader KaitlynLynch interviewed Petters in the school’s media centerstudio, posing a variety of questions about working in theshipbuilding industry. The interview was taped and willbe played for the student body at a later date. The visitwas coordinated by Career Pathways, a <strong>Newport</strong> <strong>News</strong>Public Schools program that exposes students to gradeappropriate career development experiences. The assessment evaluated the effectiveness of NNS’ securityprogram’s processes, practices and systems to protect classified information and the level of security awarenessof shipbuilders.
