With a coastline that stretches thousands of 

kilometers, more than 1,000 offshore islands, and 

where a mild Mediterranean climate eases you 

through the worst ravages of autumn and winter, 

Croatia’s appeal is obvious. Throw in chocolate-box 

pretty Venetian old towns, whose terracotta roof 

tiles find themselves in the starring role of many 

an iconic photograph, rugged mountain ranges and 

melt-in-the-mouth Adriatic seafood, and the cocktail 

becomes even more intoxicating. Although the coast is 

undoubtedly the shining star of Croatia tourism, off the 

beaten track the country also boasts undulating hills 

in inland Istria, where ornate hilltop towns, great food, 

good domestic wine and a proliferation of black and 

white truffles has earned it favorable comparisons 

with Tuscany. In the north of the country the historic 

castles of the Zagorje and more rolling green hills 

await. The oft ignored region of Slavonia, in the east of 

the country, rewards a visit with the stately riverside 

city of Osijek and the unquashable spirit of Vukovar, 

which is still fighting back from the worst ravages of 

the Homeland War, as well as vineyards and castles of 

its own. First-time visitors to the country’s capital, 

Zagreb, quickly shrug off anachronistic images of 

communist era deprivations, as they are greeted by a 

vibrant and grand metropolis complete with all the 

trappings of modern day life, an attractive old town 

and lush green spaces. A haven for gastronomes and 

sun worshippers alike, Croatia is also emerging as an 

adventure destination. Unspoiled countryside lends 

itself to cycling and hiking, as well as serious 

mountaineering, while the expansive coastline is 

perfect for almost every type of water sport 

imaginable. The Island of Brac even hosts the annual 

Vanka Regule extreme sports festival. When it comes 

to sailing, Croatia is legendary, with myriad marinas

Food The Adriatic coast is renowned for the variety of 

seafood dishes, including scampi, prstaci (shellfish) 

and brodet (mixed fish stewed with rice) all cooked in 

olive oil and served with vegetables. In the interior, 

visitors should sample manistra od bobica (beans and 

fresh maize soup). 

Drink The regional wines are good. Italian expresso is 

also popular and cheap. 

Shopping Traditional handicrafts like embroidery, 

woodcarvings and ceramics make good souvenirs.

Social People normally shake hands upon meeting

Business Croatia tends towards formal business 

protocol, but this image of Western-style efficiency is 

often belied by the fact that things go very slowly on 

account of the cumbersome bureaucracy. 

Communication, however, is no problem as English 

and German are widely used as second languages. 

Business cards including professional or academic 

titles should be exchanged just after formal 

introductions. There are also a large number of local 

agents, advisers, consultants and, to a lesser extent, 

lawyers, willing to act for foreign companies but none 

should be engaged before being thoroughly checked

with special incentive travel awards. Last year, the company looked to Warsaw-based Incentive Concept Poland 

(ICP) to organize its spring program. 

“The goal of the trip is to award the chosen agents, distinguish them with a special gift experienced with other 

employees who achieved similar results, and integrate with the company’s management,” says Krzysztof Michniewicz, 

General Manager of ICP. “The event is also a way of saying thank-you for the jointly accomplished success, and it 

motivates employees to aim for even better results in the future.”

“The MICE market is a very important travel segment for 

Croatia,” says Nena Komarica of the Croatian National Tourist 

Board. “The country offers 75 congress halls, and many of the 

leading hotels have been upgraded to accommodate business 

groups of various sizes. And with its range of great restaurants, 

concert halls, museums, and historic buildings that can serve as 

venues for a variety of group activities, Croatia really provides a 

unique approach for mixing business and pleasure.” 

Croatia wraps around Bosnia & Herzegovina like a huge letter 

“C” that encompasses a “Green” portion (inland mountains and 

plains) and a “Blue” portion (the Adriatic coast). The northern part 

of the country is primarily made up of the inland, green section, 

but the Istrian Peninsula – just a few kilometers south of Trieste Italy

Croatia’s history and culture. The Illyrian Hall, 

for instance, was built in 1838 in the classicist 

style by the Illyrians, an important group in the 

struggle for Croatian independence. Over the 

years it has held society meetings, fancy balls 

and important political and national meetings. 

The Croatian National Theater was 

opened by Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz 

Joseph I in 1895. The neo-baroque building 

and ornate interior is used today for important 

drama, ballet and operatic performances, 

as well as for congresses, meetings and 

promotional events.

The Mimara Museum, established in 

1987, is a modern institution situated in a 

neo-renaissance building also built in 1895. 

It is located in the city center on a beautiful 

square and houses one of the country’s most 

important art collections. Its luxurious interior 

rooms make it a perfect venue for exclusive 

meetings. 

Other historic meeting and event venues 

include the Golden Hall, with its spectacular 

neo-baroque hall, sculptures and frescoes 

by famous Croatian artists – a perfect venue 

for exclusive meetings, banquets, or cocktail 

parties. Another possibility is the Art Pavilion 

– the oldest exhibition building in the Slavic 

south, and the only historic building that 

was intended from conception to hold large 

representative exhibits. An ideal site for

The Zagreb Fair Congress Center offers 

numerous conference and exhibition halls and 

can cater large events of up to 2,000 people. 

It also offers state-of-the-art technology and 

banquet/hospitality services. The Hypo Expo 

XXI is part of a modern multifunction business 

center with a main hall that can host up to 

1,400 and features facilities for exhibitions, 

conferences, receptions and other events. 

Many of Zagreb’s hotels also offer meeting 

facilities, including the Westin, Sheraton, 

Four Points by Panorama, Regent Esplanade, 

International and Antunovi, among others, 

each of which has several conference halls 

and state-of-the-art AV technology. 

Rich Natural Beauty 

In a way, the development of tourism in Istria 

dates back to the days of the Roman Empire, 

when an amphitheatre was constructed in 

Pula that could hold up to 20,000 spectators 

– far more than the local population at the 

time. Throughout history, the geographical 

position of Istria near major land and sea 

routes – when combined with its mild climate, 

proximity to warm Mediterranean waters and 

the richness of its natural beauty – has made it 

a well-traveled destination. 

The coastal area of Istria – from Opatija 

in the east to Pula in the south to Rovinj 

in the west – is rich with accommodations

Opatija takes its name from the 14 th century 

Benedictine abbey around which the town was 

built. It has been an exclusive resort destination 

since the mid-1800s, when the grand Villa 

Angiolina was built and began to attract visitors 

like the Empress Maria Anna and other Austrian 

dignitaries. Emperor Franz Joseph also built a 

villa in Opatija that he used as an escape from 

the Austrian winters. Over time, Opatija’s coastal 

landscape became dotted with exclusive hotels and 

resorts surrounded by parks and gardens, many of 

which date to the 19 th century. 

Today Opatija is often called the “Nice of the 

Adriatic,” and is one of the most popular tourist 

destinations in Croatia, building on its reputation 

for attracting elite guests. The city sits at the foot 

of Mt. Ucka and overlooks a protected harbor 

and marina, making it a convenient stopping point 

for coastal cruises. The Grand Hotel Adriatic in 

Opatija has a large convention hall and can also 

handle a number of smaller events in its meeting 

facilities. The Hotel Opatija, which sits on a hillside 

just above the harbor, offers state-of-the-art meeting 

and convention facilities, as does the Hotel Milenij. 

The Opatija Congress Centre has facilities for 500- 

800 participants. 

On the Istrian Peninsula’s west coast, Rovinj 

offers one of the most romantic and atmospheric 

small towns in Croatia. Like Opatija, it’s also 

a convenient starting point for cruises taking in


the beauty of Croatia’s Adriatic coastline. 

The port of Rovinj was originally built by 

the Romans, and over its long history was 

ruled by the Byzantines, the Franks and 

the Venetians, so it offers a lot of historical 

diversity, as well as fantastic beaches. 

Local attractions include the baroque, 

three-nave St. Euphemia Church, with its 

marble relief of St. Euphemia from the 14 th 

century. There are also several Renaissance 

and Baroque palaces in the town. And the 

Rovinj Town Museum houses a collection 

of paintings from the 16 th through the 18 th 

centuries, as well as a contemporary art 

collection. Facilities in Rovinj include the Hotel 

Angelo D’Oro, the Hotel Adriatic, the Park 

and the Valdaliso. 

Rovinj is also a great place to sample 

Croatia’s special mix of island and coastal 

cuisine. It’s rich in fish and seafood, including 

prawns, calamari and shellfish. A typical 

dinner might include fish soup, fish stew, 

boiled prawns, or black and white seafood 

risotto. Other regional dishes include wine 

soup, ragout, kulen (a hot-pepper-flavored 

sausage), sarma (meat-stuffed cabbage leaves) 

and pasta and risotto dishes with truffles.

Dalmatia 

Dalmatia extends along the central and southern parts 

of the Adriatic, renowned for its stone built, 

monument-towns such as Dubrovnik, Sibenik, Zadar, 

Split, Trogir and Korcula, the hometown of MarcoPolo. 

This is an area blessed with three national parks, 

numerous islands and stunning natural beauties. As

Kvarner

Central Croatia 

Undulating hills, small churches perched on the

Concert and Congress Hall Vatroslav Lisinski in Zagreb was opened in 1973 and renovated in 1999. It is made 

up of one large and one small hall respectively, and it is fitted for congresses, meetings and other events. Here 

are also four meeting rooms and a large foyer set up for functions. It has an exhibition space of almost 

1,900 sqm/20,451 sqft and three snack bars. The large hall has more than 1,800 seats whilst the small hall holds 

over 300 persons. Concert and Congress Hall Vatroslav Lisinski is equipped with the latest sound technology and 

has a built-in system for simultaneous interpreting, as well as other up-to-date technical features. All halls are 

interlinked with audio, video and communication lines. 

Congress Centre & PCO – Zagreb Fair is a place of modern business and professional communication, and is the 

ideal venue for a variety of events: conventions, conferences, congresses, symposiums, business meetings, round 

tables, marketing presentations, press conferences, cocktail parties and gala receptions, cultural and 

entertainment events, concerts, theatrical performances, fashion shows, sport events. Zagreb Fair Convention

Zagreb The capital of the Republic of Croatia is the country’s political, economic, commercial, cultural, sports and

Split Split’s history dates back a little less than 1,700 years. This is very likely why this structure has been on the 

UNESCO list of world heritage since 1979 – being regarded as the best preserved example of imperial palace 

architecture dating from the period of Antiquity. Split is the largest town in Dalmatia and its cultural, economic and 

tourist center, with six museums, three picture galleries and a theater. 

Dubrovnik Dubrovnik is the synonym for Croatia, the city on the UNESCO list of world heritage. Standing on the 

massive walls that embrace the entire city, one can enjoy a truly singular view of the town which is a tourist 

attraction of prime importance and fully accessible to visitors. Each house in the Old Town is a historic monument, 

and that is why we can mention here of only a few – the main street, known as Stradun, the Sponza Palace, the 

Pillar of Orlando, the Ducal Palace, the Baroque church of St. Blasius – patron saint of Dubrovnik.

Themed Events 

Rector’s Dinner This dinner event takes place in the Franciscan Monastery in Cavtat or the Franciscan Monastery 

in Pridvorje. Fanfare music as a welcome, Renaissance singers Capella Ragusina during the dinner. Waiters, 

welcoming guests with a local aperitif, fritters and fresh figs, are dressed in special costumes. Round tables are 

decorated with candles, local flowers, specially designed menu on parchment paper and a flag of the Rector of 

Konavle. While the guests drink their aperitif, the host (dressed as Rector) invites the guests to take their seats. 

Menu at EUR 99 per person, EUR 23 per person for half bottle fine wine (Malvasija white, Plavac or Merlot), the

Arts/Theaters 

The Croatian National Theatre (1895) is the 

outstanding example of Croatian baroque and has 

been home to the opera, ballet and drama with many 

famous artists, among them opera diva Ruza Pospis 

Baldani and conductor Vjekoslav Sutej. 

The Lisinski Concert Hall is the center of Zagreb’s 

musical life and home of the Zagreb Philharmonic 

Orchestra and world known Zagreb Soloists. Names 

like London Philharmonic Orchestra, Ivo Pogorelic, 

Zubin Mehta, Jose Carreras, Montserrat Caballé, 

Mstislav Rostopovich, Fats Domino, Tina Turner have 

performed here. 

The Komedija Theatre with operetta, musical 

comedies, rock and pop operas gives an additional 

flair. The current hits are The Last Night of Giacomo 

Casanova, With Love, Janis, Chicago, The Full Monty 

and others. 

Museums 

The Art Pavilion is the oldest exhibition building in 

the Slavic south and the only purpose built venue with 

the intention of holding large, industry events. The first 

mention of it being used as an art pavilion was in 

1895 by the Croatian painter Vlaho Bukovac, the most 

influential artist in fine arts and culture at the end of 

the 19th century. 

Zagreb City Museum was founded by the 

Brotherhood of Croatian Dragon in 1907. Numerous 

museum collections represent an endless source of 

research and represent the way of Zagreb life 

throughout its long history to present day. 

The Museum of Arts and Crafts is one of the oldest 

of its kind and boasts the largest collection in Croatia 

of furniture, textiles, ceramics, photography, old 

musical instruments, etc. 

The Mimara Museum and Art Gallery houses a 

magnificent art collection which was donated by Ante 

T. Mimara. The 42 exhibition halls contain 3,750 

works of art: paintings (by Raphael, Rubens, 

Rembrandt - to name but a few), drawings, 

sculptures, glass, porcelain, and much more. 

Sport/Leisure 

Zagreb is well-known for the number of parks, lakes 

and green areas with many sport facilities (Jarun 

Lake, tennis courts, swimming pools, sport halls). The 

greatest park is Maksimir with a zoo. Special 

attraction is the cable car connecting the city with the 

top of the Medvednica mountain (1,035 m). 

Shopping 

One can find many attractive products, ranging from 

world famous designer shops to very special domestic 

products (like Croata ties), in short - there is always 

something of interest for the visitor as he strolls 

around pedestrian zones of the Lower City.

Concert and Congress Hall V. Lisinski The music shrine of Zagreb is eminently suitable for conventions, 

exhibitions and related events. The large hall seats 1,860 guests, the small hall seats 300 guests, plus several 

modern and well equipped smaller halls. Receptions up to 2,000 guests. 

The National House “Illyrian Hall” has the most beautiful classicist interior in Zagreb and was built in 1838, now 

completely restored. If you need an exceptional atmosphere, this is the right place. Reception capacity for 300 

guests, theater style 220 guests. 

The Golden Hall Neo-baroque hall with frescoes and sculptures by some of the best Croatian craftsmen of the 

period. The unique atmosphere is ideal for exclusive meetings and banquets. The hall seats theater style 100

Croatian National Theatre Offers special services for opening ceremonies or plenary sessions. Special 

performances can be negotiated. Auditorium seats 800 guests. Capacities for receptions are 700 guests and for

Croatian State Archives Built in 1913 this venue is one of the most beautiful art-deco buildings in Croatia, a 

successful combination of early art-deco and modern European architecture. The place, filled with rich works of art 

(paintings, reliefs, chandeliers and desk lamps, as well as decorative objects and furniture) is ideal for holding business 

meetings as well as top-class events where the beauty of the venue itself will be an additional tool for success. 

Zagreb Fair Built in 1909, this building has one of the oldest congress halls in this part of Europe. It offers numerous 

conference and exhibition halls and has the potential to cater for larger events with a capacity of 2,000 seats. 

Hypo Expo XXI is a multi-functional, modern, state-of-the-art conference and exhibition center with a total size 

of 3,500 sqm/37,678 sqft, situated in the Hypo Centre at the corner of Slavonska avenue and Marohnic Street in 

Zagreb. The main hall of the conference and event center can host up to 1,000 delegates in theater style. It has 

also the ideal infrastructure for small exhibitions, conferences and events and can be used for a variety of 

purposes and individual requirements. 

Places Of Interest 

The Cathedral St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its two neo-gothic towers dominates the city. Its present form 

dates from 19th century, although the cathedral dates from the 12th century. The cathedral treasury houses 

invaluable works of art. 

Funicular Attractive cable car links the Upper and Lower Town. It has only one stop and gives to the visitor a very 

special view of the city. 

Lotrscak Tower The best preserved object of the earlier Old Town fortifications built in the 13th century. A shot 

from a cannon from the Tower marks noontime every day. 

The Stone Gate The only completely preserved medieval gate of the Upper Town fortifications. Nowadays a 

chapel where you can light a candle under the baroque altar in thanks to the Mother of God of the Stone Gate. 

St. Mark’s Square Central square of the Upper Town, named after St. Mark’s Church with its colorful roof 

representing the historic coats of arms of Zagreb and Croatia. Croatian Parliament and the Government of the 

Republic of Croatia are located on the square. 

St. Catherine Church The most beautiful baroque church in Croatia, situated on the Catherine Square, built by the 

Jesuits in the 17th century.
