Symbolic <strong>in</strong>vestment is nota new strategy when it comes to mak<strong>in</strong>g objects, though Cordova pushes the envelope one step further by add<strong>in</strong>gpersonal and cultural references—however oblique—to the mix. Likewise, Philadelphia-based Alex Da Corte’s nomadicupbr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g (divided between New Jersey and Venezuela) adds an unpredictable range to his choice of materials andapproaches. Da Corte’s sculptures are made from, among other th<strong>in</strong>gs, acrylic nails, dried soda, Swarovski crystalsand derelict stuffed animals, recall<strong>in</strong>g the abject Pop sensibilities of Mike Kelley, William Pope.L and Paul McCarthy.
