G<strong>in</strong>ger Johnson andLiz Pickett, the founders of G<strong>in</strong>ger+ Liz Colour Collection, are twoof the many <strong>in</strong>novators <strong>in</strong> the nail<strong>in</strong>dustry, and are particularly wellknown for their vegan-friendly naillacquers. Recently I had a chance tochat with G<strong>in</strong>ger and Liz about theirexperience <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry, wherethey draw creative <strong>in</strong>spiration fromand the historical background ofnail art and design.Sophia Bruneau: What made youdecide to go <strong>in</strong>to the nail <strong>in</strong>dustry?G<strong>in</strong>ger Johnson and Liz Pickett:We are both admittedly productjunkies (from sk<strong>in</strong> care to hair careto fragrance), but our friendship fastbecame an unbreakable bond whenwe discovered that we both have anirreparable addiction to nail lacquer.In years past, we casually talked aboutlaunch<strong>in</strong>g a product l<strong>in</strong>e together,but we wanted it to be a product thatwould br<strong>in</strong>g a new vibe to the beauty<strong>in</strong>dustry. One day back <strong>in</strong> January2009, we had that “aha!” momentwhile digg<strong>in</strong>g through a b<strong>in</strong> of polishes,look<strong>in</strong>g for the perfect purple.It was then that we realized that ourfavorite beauty category, nail polish,could use some new zeal. N<strong>in</strong>e monthslater, we had our first ten shades readyfor preview!SB: How do two young women ofcolor start their own LLC? Did youencounter challenges because ofyour race and gender?G+L: Our challenges have had moreto do with ageism and sexism. <strong>The</strong> nail<strong>in</strong>dustry is dom<strong>in</strong>ated by men beh<strong>in</strong>dthe scenes, the manufacturers <strong>in</strong> particular.As young women, we have hadchallenges with gett<strong>in</strong>g manufacturersand suppliers on the same forwardth<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>gpage.SB: What is your creative process forcom<strong>in</strong>g up with nail designs and colors?Where do you f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>spiration?G+L: We are different from otherbrands because we don’t simply usepublished trend<strong>in</strong>g reports to createnew shades or fashion-<strong>in</strong>spired nail artdesigns. We rely on real-time lifestyletrends and behaviors and are heavily<strong>in</strong>fluenced by art, fashion, travel andenterta<strong>in</strong>ment.
