T. A. Hoffmann’s tale The Nutcracker and <strong>the</strong>Mouse King (1816). Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky created <strong>the</strong> music <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> ballet of this charming story in closecollaboration with Marius Petipa, <strong>the</strong> renowned choreographer who, due to illness, turned <strong>the</strong> project overto his assistant, Lev Ivanov.
