P R I VA T E S U P P O R TCapital Campaign Development ProgressThis fiscal year marks the mid-point of theCampaign for the University of Virginia. Onceagain the <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> set anannual target of $14 million in new commitmentsas it sought to meet our campaign goal of $1<strong>00</strong>million. Through the generosity of our friends andbenefactors, the <strong>Foundation</strong> has surpassed the fiscalyear target for the fifthconsecutive year.The <strong>Foundation</strong>has seen expansion infinancial support forboth the undergraduateand graduate programs.This year we havereceived commitmentsof $8.7 million for theundergraduate program. This will enable the regionalscholarship competition to expand to Jacksonville,Tampa, and Kansas City. For the first time we willhave over 50 regional selection competitions in thefall of 2<strong>00</strong>8.We have also received $5.4 million in newcommitments to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School of Arts &Sciences, the Darden School of Business, and the<strong>Graduate</strong> School of Engineering and Applied Science(SEAS). Our continued involvement with the DardenSchool has proven very successful. Working closelytogether, the <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> and theDarden <strong>Foundation</strong> successfully raised funds for a<strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Fellows</strong>hip in the name of Professor JohnL. Colley Jr. This effort has proven so important toDarden alumni and friends that the goal was met anddoubled within eight months.Furthermore, in the spirit of cooperation, the<strong>Foundation</strong>’s joint effort with the SEAS and theThrough the generosity of ourfriends and benefactors, the<strong>Foundation</strong> has surpassed thefiscal year target for the fifthconsecutive year.Virginia Engineering <strong>Foundation</strong> will not onlystrengthen the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Fellows</strong>hip Program butwill also help the SEAS accomplish its top priority,graduate support. SEAS Dean Jim Aylor stated,“This strong link between SEAS and the <strong>Jefferson</strong><strong>Scholars</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> provides our school with acompetitive edge to attract the most highly valuedPh.D. candidates.”In addition, the<strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong><strong>Foundation</strong> will furthersupport the Universityin its effort to recognizeexcellence in scienceand engineering. Inpartnership with theHartfield <strong>Foundation</strong> wewill begin to award a teaching prize annually. Thisprize recognizes and celebrates the commitmentof outstanding faculty members of the Universitywho instruct undergraduate students in the SEAS.The recipients will have demonstrated exceptionalcommitment to their students’ learning, as wellas knowledge of and passion for their subject.This important initiative will further establishthe <strong>Foundation</strong> as a central driver of change andexcellence at the University.The <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> continuesto be at the forefront of the University ofVirginia’s philanthropic efforts. We are deeplygrateful for the generous support and commitmentfrom our many friends and benefactors. Evenin uncertain financial times, the <strong>Foundation</strong>has continued to keep its focus on attracting tothe Grounds of the University the world’s mostexceptional leaders, scholars, and citizens.
