P R I VA T E S U P P O R TProfile: Gregory A. McCrickardA 1981 graduate of the College of Arts& Sciences, Greg is a vice president andportfolio manager at T. Rowe PriceAssociates, Inc. in Baltimore. He and his wifeBeth have supported the Jefferson ScholarsFoundation by serving on the JeffersonScholars Selection Committee, as well asby creating the Gregory A. McCrickardScholarship and The Newman FamilyJefferson Fellowship. Beth and Greg havethree sons, one of whom is a rising third yearstudent at U.Va. Recently Greg responded toquestions posed to him by the Foundation:Where did you grow up, and why did you attend theUniversity?I grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, just a bit down the road fromCharlottesville. Several members of my extended family hadattended the University; so, naturally, Virginia was high on my list.One visit was enough to convince me U.Va. was a great fit.How did you first become involved with theJefferson Scholars Foundation?One of my colleagues, Hugh Evans, had been a Jefferson Scholarduring his time at U.Va. Hugh introduced me to Jimmy Wrightwho, of course, is a powerful advocate for the program. After justone visit with Jimmy, I was sold on the tremendous potentialimpact the program can have on our University.What about the Foundation and its mission piquedyour and Beth’s interest in getting more involved?The program attracts the best and the brightest student leaders toU.Va. It is truly an exhilarating experience to attend the finalselection weekend and meet these amazing kids. If possible, wewould want each one of these students to attend the University.Because our family has a special interest in funding need-basedfinancial aid, Jimmy wisely suggested that we set up a program tohelp outstanding “runners-up” attend the University.Tell me about your experience on the selectioncommittee.What a fascinating weekend! Beth and I were truly inspired tobe surrounded by these talented and amazing candidates. It wasa privilege to play a small part in the selection process and get toknow these very accomplished students. These candidates demonstratetrue leadership and give us great hope for the future.As an undergraduate alumnus of the University,why did your family choose to support theGraduate Fellows Program?Then, as now, U.Va. is blessed with many talented professors.The foundation of an extraordinary undergraduate institution isfaculty excellence. Talented graduate fellows are instrumental inattracting and supporting outstanding faculty to the University.Why did you name the fellowship after yourmother’s family?I have been a lifelong student of history. My Aunt BillieNewman Carwile received her master’s degree from U.Va. andtaught history at a local community college for many years. Shehelped inspire my love of Virginia history, and she entertained usfor hours at family functions with tales drawn from her researchinto my mother’s family genealogy.Greg was fortunate to attend U.Va. with theassistance of financial aid. “The University had aprofound impact on my life and certainly helped tolay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning,”explains McCrickard. “The Jefferson ScholarsFoundation enabled our family to give back to theUniversity through a program that both enriches theacademic experience of current students and buildson the Jeffersonian ideal of training self-governingleaders for our society.”12
