Calculation Parameters147Calculation ParametersStep d: Calculation of the transmission ratioThe following principles have to be taken into account:I. Minimum number of teethFor every timing belt type a minimum number of pulley teethis recommended to ensure that the flexing ability of the timingbelt stays within acceptable limits. The pulley tables in thiscatalogue show this recommended minimum number of teethfor each type. For special constructions, pulleys with a smallernumber of teeth are available on requestII. Number of teeth engagedThe maximum number of teeth to calculate the timing belt islimited to 12 teeth so as not to overload the cords. Due to thejoint, jointed belts are less powerful, so the maximum numberof teeth for this calculation is limited to 6III. Pulley sizeThe bigger the pulley, the more expensive they are with a largerinertial mass. For this reason pulleys should be selected at thesmallest practical size.Calculating the transmission ratio:A transmission ratio is achieved by a different number of teethon each pulley. This can be used to adjust the speed of thedrive motor to the requirements of the application.
