LETTER
From the President
It is a great honor to have been asked to serve as Board President of the Whitefish Community
Foundation following in the footsteps of Mike Jenson and Dave Stewart. Over
the past eight years the Foundation has served as a vehicle to channel over $2,000,000 in
charitable gifts to many deserving area nonprofit organizations whose work is so important
to make the community the special place that we all call home.
30 grants were awarded this year to local nonprofit organizations who had submitted
applications as part of our annual grants program. These organizations undergo a rigorous
approval process by a committee who examines not only need but financial responsibility.
We’ve included comments from some of our grant recipients in this report to illustrate the
impact of the grants program to these organizations made possible by your contributions
to the Foundation.
Total disbursements through the Foundation in 2007 exceeded $300,000, the fifth consecutive
year exceeding that amount. The majority of those disbursements, however, are
through Donor Advised Funds (“DAFs”). This means our grantees are depending on the
continued generosity of the relatively small number of donors who have established a DAF.
To reduce the Foundation’s reliance on DAFs, we continue to concentrate on building our
permanent endowment fund, which has grown to nearly $800,000 at the end of 2007.
To secure a permanent source of funding for grants, the Foundation Board has committed
to grow the endowment fund to a level at which earnings from the endowment would fully
fund our grants program and reduce our reliance on annual contributions to support our area
nonprofit service organizations. We have set a goal to grow the endowment to $5,000,000 or
more over the next 3 years and are confident that the community will respond. To achieve
this goal, we will be reaching out to a broad range of donors and potential donors, both big
and small, who have an interest in supporting the future of our community.
Our mission is simple, “The Whitefish Community Foundation is dedicated to fostering
philanthropy, building endowments, and helping donors and nonprofits benefit
our community.” For those who have contributed to our
mission, thank you so very much for your support. For those
who are interested in learning more about the Foundation,
please contact our office at 863-1781 or visit our website at
www.whitefishcommunityfoundation.org. Come join
us in enriching the future of Whitefish! You can make
a difference.
DREAM Adaptive Recreation North Valley Food Bank, Inc.
GRANT HIGHLIGHTS 2007
Providing winter sports opportunities for disabled children and adults at Whitefish Mountain
Resort is the goal of DREAM Adaptive Recreation, Inc. Our grant helped with operating
expenses and provided funds for a set of Constant-force Articulated Dynamic Struts, which enable
individuals with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy to experience
stand-up skiing.
The Winter Classic Foundation “For the Children, Inc.” provides funds for families needing
pediatric medical care outside the Flathead Valley. Our grant to this foundation will assist families
with locating medical facilities, travel expenses and lodging while out of town for specialized
care. As is the case with many of our local nonprofits, Whitefish Winter Classic is run completely
by volunteers.
A critical need in our community is being addressed by the N.C. Foundation, which strives to
improve the health, education and welfare of children suffering from emotional problems, mental
health issues and chemical dependency. Our grant helped to provide school-based mental health
screening and therapy for uninsured Whitefish students.
stay involved with their gifts by recommending (“advising”) contributions to benefit their favorite
Patron Pass Program
The Whitefish Community Foundation is fortunate to work with Whitefish Mountain Resort
and the Whitefish Lake Golf Club to offer transferable ski or golf passes. In each case, the Pass
purchaser is able to make a charitable contribution to the community (partially tax-deductible)
and receive either a ski or golf pass with additional benefits.
The Patron Ski Pass, which was established several years ago, began as a way for the Foundation
to cover its operating costs. The Patron Ski Pass includes one transferable ski pass or two nontransferable
adult passes, preferred parking and a private locker. Most of the sale proceeds are
used for charitable giving through Whitefish Mountain Resort’s donor-advised fund.
2007 saw the Patron Pass program expand by offering a limited number of Patron Golf Passes
through the Whitefish Lake Golf Club. The Patron Golf Pass includes one transferable pass, a golf
GRANT APPLICATIoN
Grant Application Process
Copies of the Grant Application and guidelines can be found at the Foundation’s website at www.
whitefishcommunityfoundation.org under Grants. Further information can be obtained by calling
our office at (406) 863-1781.
Each year the grants committee receives many grant applications which are closely examined. The
process includes review of financial statements, site visits, and prioritizing the needs of the applicants.
The funds are then allocated by considering the amount of funds available each year.
The Foundation supports nonprofit organizations in Flathead County, with preference given to
those organizations whose work primarily serves the citizens of Whitefish. By law, grants may be
made only to nonprofit organizations that are considered tax-exempt under the provisions of Section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or are a publicly-owned tax-exempt organization.
