ForewordA hydraulic accumulator is a device in which potential energy isstored in the form of a compressed gas or spring, or by a raised weightto be used to exert a force against a relatively incompressible fluid. They are used in fluid power systems to accumulate energyand to smooth out pulsations. A hydraulic system utilizing anaccumulator can use a smaller fluid pump since the accumulatorstores energy from the pump during low demand periods. This energyis available for instantaneous use, released upon demand at a ratemany times greater than could be supplied by the pump alone.Accumulators can also act as surge or pulsation absorbers, much as an air dome is used on pulsating piston or rotarypumps. They will cushion hydraulic hammer, reducingshocks caused by rapid operation or sudden starting andstopping of power cylinders in a hydraulic circuit. There are four principal types of accumulators, the weight loadedpiston type, diaphragm (or bladder) type, spring type and the hydropneumaticpiston type. The weight loaded type was the first used but ismuch larger and heavier for its capacity than modern piston and bladdertypes. Both the weighted type, and mechanical spring type are veryseldom used today. The hydro-pneumatic types use a gas as a springcushion in conjunction with a hydraulic fluid, the gas and fluid beingseparated by a thin diaphragm or a piston. Tobul accumulators, havingan aluminum piston of low inertia as standard equipment, are superiorto other makes in absorbing either high or low frequency pulsations.GAS VALVEGAS VALVEEND CAPWEIGHTSEND CAPGASCHAMBERGASCHAMBERRUBBERSEPARATORSPRINGPISTONSEALPISTONSTEELBOTTLEPISTONSEALPISTONPISTON SEALPISTONEND CAPFLUIDPORTFLUIDCHAMBERFLUIDCHAMBERPOPPETVALVEFLUID PORTEND CAPFLUIDPORTFLUIDCHAMBEREND CAPFLUID PORTFLUIDCHAMBER4FunctionsStores Energy.Hydro-pneumatic accumulators incorporate a gas in conjunctionwith a hydraulic fluid. The fluid has little dynamic power storagequalities. The fluid normally used in fluid power applications can bereduced in volume only about 1.7% under a pressure of 5000 PSI.Therefore when only 2% of the total contained volume is released, thepressure of the remaining oil in the system will drop to zero. However, the relative incompressibility of a hydraulic fluid makes it ideal forfluid power systems and provides quick response to power demand. The gas, on the other hand, a partner to the hydraulic fluidin the accumulator, can be compressed to high pressures and lowvolumes. Potential energy is stored in this compressed gas to bereleased upon demand. This energy can be compared to that of araised pile driver ready to transfer its tremendous energy upon thepile. In the piston type accumulator the energy in the compressed gasexerts pressure against the piston separating the gas and hydraulicfluid. The piston in turn forces the fluid from the cylinder into thesystem and to the location where useful work will be accomplished.Absorbs Pulsations. In most fluid power applications, pumps are used to generatethe required power to be used or stored in a hydraulic system. Manypumps deliver this power in a pulsating flow. The piston pump, ascommonly used for higher pressures, tends to produce pulsationdetrimental to a high pressure system. An accumulator properly locatedin the system will substantially cushion these pressure variations.Cushions Operating Shock. In many fluid power applications the driven member of the hydraulicsystem stops suddenly, creating a pressure wave which is sent backthrough the system. This shock wave can develop peak pressures severaltimes greater than normal working pressures and can be the source ofsystem failure or objectionable noise. The gas cushion in an accumulator, properly placed in the system, will minimize this shock. An exampleof this application is the absorption of shock caused by suddenlystopping the loading bucket on a hydraulic front end loader. Withoutan accumulator, the bucket, weighing over 2 tons, can completely liftthe rear wheels of a loader off the ground. The severe shock to thetractor frame and axle, as well as operator wear and tear, is overcomeby the addition of an adequate accumulator to the hydraulic system.Supplements Pump Delivery. An accumulator, capable of storing power, can supplement the fluidpump in delivering power to the system. The pump stores potentialenergy in the accumulator during idle periods of the work cycle. Theaccumulator transfers this reserve power back to the system whenthe cycle requires emergency or peak power. This enables a system toutilize a much smaller pump, resulting in savings in cost and power.Maintains Pressure.Pressure changes occur in a hydraulic system when the liquidis subjected to rising or falling temperatures. Also, there may bepressure drop due to leakage of hydraulic fluid. An accumulatorcompensates for such pressure changes by delivering or receivinga small amount of hydraulic liquid. In the event the main powersource should fail or be stopped, the accumulator would act as anauxiliary power source, maintaining pressure in the system.Dispenses.An accumulator may be used to dispense fluids underpressure, such as lubricating greases and oils.

18Bladder-Type AccumulatorsAn OverviewThe typical bladder accumulator makes use of theconsiderable differences in the relative compressibilitybetween a gas and a fluid. A typical design consistsof a gas proof elastomer membrane enclosed withina steel shell. The membrane contains compressed gas(normally dry nitrogen) and separates the gas fromthe hydraulic fluid. The compressed gas provides apneumatic spring action to force stored hydraulic fluidfrom the accumulator into the system as needed. The steel shells are typically manufactured ofhomogenous seamless steel tubing with both endsformed hemispherically by spinning or forging. Theshells are then heat treated and stress relieved toobtain the desired mechanical properties, as requiredby ASME Code Section VIII, Division 1 pressurevessel requirements. Corrosion resistance can beachieved with the use of stainless steel, but is morecommonly obtained by plating the shell interior withnickel or coating with an epoxy or phenolic compound.Common bladder-type accumulator capacities areone pint, one quart, and one through fifteen gallons(1, 2.5, 5, 10, 11, and 15). Bladders are commonlyconstructed of a particular elastomer (Buna-N, Butyl,EPR, Viton®, etc.) specified to achieve a desiredcompatibility with the system fluid (hydraulic oil, water glycols, etc.) and elasticity throughout theoperating temperature range (typically -20°F to200°F). Normally, a spring-loaded poppet valveassembly is utilized to prevent extrusion of thebladder. This commonly limits the fluid flow rateto a maximum of 220 gallons per minute into thesystem from the accumulator, but higher flows canbe obtained with a special poppet valve assembly. The typical bladder-type accumulator is a bottomrepairable design, in that the bladder is insertedinto the shell through a bottom opening in theshell. This opening allows the installation of theoil port body/poppet valve assembly to seal theaccumulator. Optional top repairable designs areavailable, along with various gas stem sizes (7/8"& 2") if desired. Tobul’s parts and bladder kits areinterchangeable with most major manufacturers.Due to the limited volume capacities, it is commonto find banks of bladder-type accumulators connectedto a manifold in order to provide the desired quantityof fluid to a system. Unfortunately, this can causephysical space limitations in certain applications.Generally, bladder-type units are connectedto a system by threading a pressure connectiondirectly into the fluid port of the accumulator.Various sized porting must be specified andmay entail the use of special adaptors or bolt-onflanges to achieve desired fluid connections.GAS VALVEGASCHAMBERRUBBERSEPARATORSTEELBOTTLEFLUIDCHAMBERPOPPETVALVEFLUID PORTIllustrations are representational and not necessarily indicative of how any particular model will be built.

Bottom repairable modelsBottom repairable bladder-type designs(Tobul model designation TBR) are the mostcommonly found units in the marketplace.Fluid capacities are generally limited toa small variety of sizes (one quart to fifteengallons/approximately 1 Liter to 57 Liters).Pressure ratings of these vessels aregenerally 3000 PSI (207 Bar), 5000 PSI (345Bar) or less. Bladder AccumulatorsTop repairable modelsTop repairable bladder-type designs (Tobulmodel designation TBRT) are readily availablein the marketplace, but much less commonlyseen than bottom repairable units. TBRT’s aremore expensive than TBR’s since an additionalgas port body and anti-extrusion ring is necessaryto completely seal the accumulator shell.Top Repairable Versus Bottom Repairable? The distinct advantage of a TBRT (Top Repairable)unit is the fact that a unit may be repaired (i.e., bladderreplaced) without dismounting an accumulator fromthe system. As long as the unit can be isolated and thesystem pressure relieved, the top gas port assemblycan be accessed and a replacement bladder installed.22Note: It is extremely important to follow ALL guidelines formaintenance and repair of any pressure vessel! Please contact Tobulsales & service engineering (803-245-5111) for assistance withany questions. Please visit www.tobul.com for a downloadablecopy of Tobul’s Operating and Maintenance Procedures priorto beginning any procedure on any Tobul accumulator.Illustrations are representational and not necessarily indicative of how any particular model will be built.

EconoLator II ®Open Top Bladder AccumulatorRepairableThe “EconoLator II®” is a Tobul productseries which is a transition from piston-typeaccumulators to bladder-type accumulators, andincorporates characteristics of both designs…24Utilizes a cylindrical steel cylinder with heads similar topiston-types. The fluid cap (bottom) is precision machineweldedinto the steel cylinder to form a durable vessel.Utilizes an open top bladder available in a variety ofsizes and elastomer materials (Buna-N/Butyl/EPR/Viton®) similar to a diaphragm-type design. Whereasmany diaphragm-type units are permanently sealed andnon-repairable, the “EconoLator II®” is repairable.Utilizes an upper cap and threaded ring assembly toretain and seal the open topped bladder, providing asimple “top-repairable” advantage; e.g., unit does not haveto be removed from a vertically mounted application inorder to replace bladder as long as Accumulator can beisolated from system pressure and physically accessible.Available in one quart and one gallon capacityat this time, with a one pint capacity unitto be released in the near future. The EBR50 series (5,000 PSI) utilizes a threadedfluid end cap in addition to the upper gas cap andretaining ring assembly, similar to piston-type units.Illustrations are representational and not necessarily indicative of how any particular model will be built.

Gas BottlesAn OverviewWhy Use Gas Bottles?A standard hydro-pneumatic accumulatorcan provide approximately 25 to 30% of its fluidcapacity in usable volume (e.g., approx. 38 gallonsof capacity in a piston-type to obtain 10 gallons offluid volume; approx. 42 gallons of capacity in abladder-type to obtain 10 gallons of fluid volume). The size of the accumulator can be reduced, though, by providing additional gas volumeto the accumulator in order to expel a greaterpercentage of usable fluid volume from the unit(e.g., with Piston-type, the addition of approx. 28gallons of pressurized gas capacity will allow thereduction of the necessary accumulator volume to14 gallons and still receive 10 gallons of usable fluidvolume; with Bladder-type, the addition of approx.31 gallons of pressurized gas capacity will allowthe reduction of the necessary accumulator volumeto 11 gallons and still receive 10 gallons of usablefluid volume) Note: above approximations based on3000 PSI max pressure/2000 PSI min pressure.Since gas bottles are simply pressure vessels utilizedto store a quantity of pressurized gas (normallynitrogen) without an internal bladder or piston, theeffective cost per gallon of volume is less than theaccumulator itself, thereby making gas bottles a costeffectivemethod of supplementing fluid volumes.Example of TypicalGas Bottle/Accumulator SystemPLUGGEDPLUGGED27GASBOTTLEGASBOTTLEGASREMOTECHARGINGBLOCKFLUIDMANIFOLD FOR CONNECTIONOF MULTIPLE UNITSTO SYSTEMwww.Tobul.com

Gas BottlesForged Carbon Steel ShellForged steel shells withoutinternal gas bladders are acost-effective approach toproviding additional gasvolumes to selected systems.28Generally, these pressurevessels with hemisphericalends are readily available in themarketplace, and can sometimelead to a lower initial cost.Available only in a limitedselection of sizes, though, multiple units may be “banked”(e.g., installed on a commonmanifold or header) to providethe required cumulative volumes.Illustrations are representational and not necessarily indicative of how any particular model will be built.

Gas Bottles30Cylindrical Carbon SteelGas Bottles may befabricated similar to pistontypeaccumulators (less theinternal piston), providing a widevariety of available capacitiesand physical dimensions. This allows for an extensiverange of capacities, much largerthan available with forged shells. The versatility in applicationprovides the system designerthe ability to eliminate banksof multiple smaller capacityshells with a minimum numberof higher volume fabricatedbottles. This is especiallyvaluable in applications wherespace (e.g., physical dimensions)and weight are critical.Illustrations are representational and not necessarily indicative of how any particular model will be built.

It allows for theselection of a custom specified model or the closeststandard size; optionally, multiples of smallersized standard units may be selected if desired. The resulting output can be viewed and printed(physically/digitally) and utilized as necessary. The real advantage of optimizing accumulatorsand systems can be seen when an equipment supplieris able to customize his system quotations to theircustomers’ needs, and show concrete examplesof performance and initial costs balanced againston-going energy costs in various sized systems.39www.Tobul.com

Safety Shutoff Valves40Tobul Safety Shutoff Valves (TSV30/50) aredesigned to protect hydraulic systems from excesspressure; shut off hydraulic flow and isolateaccumulators from the hydraulic system; and bleedoff/discharge system pressure from accumulators andassociated equipment. The optional electrical solenoidcartridge valve allows for the automatic release/bleedoff of accumulator/system fluid pressure in the case ofan emergency shutdown or loss of electrical power. The Tobul TSV30/50 consists of a main ball valveshutoff in an all steel body; a manually operatedneedle-type pressure bleed cartridge valve; and anautomatic overpressure relief cartridge valve, withvarious models designed for use in 3000 PSI or 5000PSI systems. Additional porting is provided for adrain to reservoir/tank, and an optional sensor/gauge.With a straight-through, free flow manual ballvalve of 1 /2" to 2" diameter (SAE O-ring style), theTobul TSV has the capability to meet industries’diverse requirements for a durable, adaptable,cost-effective safety shutoff valve series for use withmany types of accumulators and hydraulic systems.Safety shutoff valve provides manual isolationof the accumulator from the hydraulic systemAll valves have a straight-through,unrestricted full-flow openingEach valve incorporates a safety lock-out featureto prevent unauthorized operation; this conformsto OSHA’s “Lock Out-Tag Out” programNon adjustable factory pre-set pressure relief valveprevents over pressurization of isolated accumulatorEasy one hand operationOptional Electric solenoid pressure relief valvecan be ordered normally open or normallyclosed to meet system requirementsMachined from high grade steelwith black oxide coatingIllustrations are representational and not necessarily indicative of how any particular model will be built.

Product Safety GuidelinesWARNING! The improper selection and/or use and/orimproper installation and/or maintenance of accumulatorsand related accessories can result in failure and/or deathand/or personal injury and/or property damage.Prior to the selection or installation or use of any TobulAccumulator or related accessories, it is important that theuser read, understand and follow all safety information.42OVERVIEWDue to the wide variety of accumulator (hereafter referredto as “products”) applications and operating conditions, TobulAccumulator, Inc. does not warrant any particular productor products as suitable for any specific application. Thissafety guide does not consider and/or attempt to analyzeall technical information and hydraulic system parameterswhich must be considered in selection of products. Each user, through their own analysis, is solely responsible fordetermining the final selection of products and related accessories. The user shall be responsible for determining if the products arerequired to meet specific design requirements as required by anygovernmental agencies or industry standards applicable to thedesign of the user’s equipment. User must insure that all safetyrequirements are met and safety guidelines are followed andthat the particular use/application of any product and accessoriespresents no health or safety hazards. The user is also responsiblefor providing all appropriate health and safety warnings on theequipment on which the products will be used and/or installed.SEAL SELECTION CRITERIAWhen selecting the seals for a particular application, itis extremely important to read and understand all pertinentinformation on the operating fluids to be used in the systemor contact Tobul engineering for assistance. A wide varietyof fluids can be utilized in systems and can occasionally havedeleterious effects on the accumulator seals if the seal compoundsare not compatible with the fluids. Additionally, dynamicseals are wear items. The rate of wear depends on many factorsand can rapidly increase if the product and/or the system and/or the system fluid is not properly maintained/filtered.ACCUMULATOR MOUNTING andPORTING CONSIDERATIONSTobul Accumulator, Inc. recommends mounting ofaccumulators in a vertical configuration (with the fluid port on thebottom) for optimum performance. This configuration minimizesthe chance that system/fluid contaminants may be deposited withinthe accumulator, as may occur when accumulators are mountedhorizontally. Horizontal orientation and/or contaminationcan result in premature seal wear and/or premature failure.Installers/users must insure accumulators are mountedsecurely, and the hydraulic system plumbing should never bethe sole method of mounting. When “U-Bolt” type clampsare utilized, the installer/user must insure the clamps are notexcessively tightened, especially on piston-type accumulators, toprevent distortion of the pressure vessel wall. Welding mountingbrackets to any type of accumulator is NOT recommended.Accumulator ports must be sufficiently sized to providethe required fluid flow as specified by the user, but mustalso be of a recommended design for the pressure ratingof the system. The preferred port type is one sealed byan elastomeric seal designed for the system pressure, rather than an interference fit such as a pipe thread.ACCUMULATOR PRE-CHARGE—————————WARNING!—————————ACCUMULATORS SHOULD BE CHARGEDONLY WITH AN INERT GAS, SUCH AS DRYNITROGEN. NEVER USE OXYGEN!Only qualified personnel following the manufacturer’sinstructions and utilizing only components specified by theaccumulator manufacturer should perform pre-chargingof an accumulator, or the periodic checking of proper precharge.Accumulators function due to differential pressures. The specific differential within the system is determinedby the system’s operating parameters. Variation from thispressure will cause the system to degrade in performance.REPAIRS AND MODIFICATIONSTobul products are NOT to be disassembled and/ormodified after leaving the manufacturer. If products requiremodifications, these modifications must be performed byTobul Accumulator, Inc. or by a factory authorized facility.Disassembly of any Tobul product for the purpose of preventivemaintenance and/or seal replacement is allowed ONLY afterproper factory authorized training of all involved personnel.ALL ACCUMULATORS ARE PRESSURE VESSELSAND MUST BE HANDLED WITH THE UTMOSTCARE BY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL ONLY!
