6A NOTE FROM THE DESIGNER….The success of our designs I feel, stems from thepractical commonsense approach of a boatbuilder, coupled with many years of live aboardexperience and 50 ‐ 60,000 sea miles in some ofthe worst conditions in the world. Thisexperience makes one aware of the power of thesea and the need for a boat to be able to survivethese conditions, protect her crew physically andpsychologically as well as being a fast comfortablevehicle for all the good times. I am sure youwill find our designs reflect our sailing and liveaboardexperience and will give you the offshoreconfidence to sail safely anywhere in the world.Multihulls are ‘beautiful, safe, cruising boats’. Wehope you find them as exciting as we do.This is definitely not the case, similar boat, similarprice! Your choice should therefore be towards theboat that suits you best and offers you good backupand is a good investment. Secondly, we know a lot ofpeople who could not afford their boat at the onsetso don’t be discouraged. Once you start building it issurprising how you focus your interest, spare timeand money into your new project. With our newowner‐builders we suggest they start with theCHOOSING A DESIGN...Choosing a design can be difficult so we hopethat this introduction helps clear the way a little. We’ve taken particular care with the balance ofconstruction methods in our designs, makingthem light and strong yet easy to build in smallsections, most of which are manageable by agroup of friends when they need turning overand moving. The blend of strip planking and lightflat panels kept in single plane form, makes buildingeasy and quick and produces a finished catamaranof classic good looks which will not datequickly, giving you very good investment security. One of the first steps in changing this dream intoreality is figuring out whether you can afford theboat (or more likely, how much money you‘don’t’ have!). Two realities here are, firstly, twosimilar sized boats with similar displacement, built of similar materials will cost the same tobuild overall. Designers’ estimates of materialsare often inaccurate and sometimes minimized tolead one to believe their boat will be cheaper.smaller items which can be built in the garage, carport,(lounge?) etc. These initial items use very littlematerial and money but use a lot of time, so at theearly stages you can get a lot done while you wait foryour old boat or car or house etc. to sell. These itemsare; dagger‐boards and cases, motor pod, forwardbeam and catwalk, cabin roof, rudders, dinghy etc.The experience and confidence gained building thesebits speeds up the second stage of larger items andgets the whole project finished much sooner.WHAT MAKES A GOOD MULTIHULL?Cat design is not just a matter of two hulls floating acabin above the water. Only in fairly recent yearshave the basic elements of design and an understandingof their effect on the use and performanceof the finished boat been understood. The basic principlesof good design should all be present in theboat you’re considering building or buying. These willblend together to produce an excellent Multihull.

8LOW DRAG. This is a good characteristic. Slim hullsreduce drag and are efficient.A good cruising cat would have a Waterline beamto length ratio of 11.5 to 12.5:1. A performancecruising cat 12.5 to 14:1 and a racing cat 14 to 20:1 Itis important to note that ALL these elements mustbe present in a design to make any of them valid. For example, a design can be really good looking, have high bridge‐deck clearance, a powerful rigand sail plan and be built reasonably light andshow a fair displacement, but then have an 8:1Beam to Length ratio. She’ll be a good looking, powerful boat but it will be impossible to go forward, except slowly! There is no reason why a good modern designdoes not have all of these features. If you findsome of these lacking it is usually for the wrongreasons. A lot of cats have very little bridge‐deckclearance because the designer is concentratingon a low profile cat which looks good or being dictatedby interior accommodation and ignoring thefact that the boat will pound badly at sea. This isnot only noisy and uncomfortable but can well bethe cause of structural problems. Our designs have been developed around thesepractical elements of good design then we accommodatepersonal comforts and lifestyle choices.Good luck with your research and project, don’thesitate to contact us should you need furtherinformation or a chat about our designs.Reverse bows, curved forward beam and stunning sails.“Bulletproof” was built by Andrew Crick Boat Building, Maryborough Qld forScott and Vanessa GralowAll photo’s used are courtesy Scott Gralow and Mark GilesNEED HELP SOURCING MATERIALS?We supply hundreds of builders and don’t carry stock, the goodsgo directly from the manufacturer or distributor to you.SAVE MONEY AND HANDLING COSTSCall Rob at Schionning Marine today (02) 4982 4858
