Some Basics: Preparing/Updating/Transferring Course MaterialsCOPYRIGHT BULLETIN 13:03/04“SOME COPYRIGHT BASICSPREPARING/UPDATING/TRANSFERRING COURSE MATERIALS”Preparing New or Updating/Transferring existing materials?Often staff seek assistance to develop, or update their existing knowledge and understandingof copyright, prior to preparing new course materials, reviewing existing materials, ortransferring from hard copy to electronic (“preparing”).One occasion that frequently occurs is when a staff member has previously been grantedpermission, for use of hard copy materials, to copy from a publication in excess of that whichwould normally be allowable under university licence (e.g. University Print and GraphicCopying/Communications). *They may be unsure whether the permission granted, for hardcopy use, will automatically apply if material is to be transferred to an electronic environmente.g. online using Blackboard. This is just one of the many basic questions that arise when preparing course materials.*[In response to the above example, “No” a permission, granted ONLY for use of material in a hardcopy format, may not be automatically transferred to the electronic environment.]A Handy Reference ListThanks to those staff who have sought assistance, a handy reference list, which althoughnot intended to be exhaustive, is aimed at providing a basic guide for topics frequentlyraised by staff preparing materials. Please remember that by taking a little time on specific topics of relevance EARLY, canoften save later delays (and staff resources) in finalising course materials e.g. a staffmember recently organised permission to copy materials over and above what theythought would be allowable, only to find that they could have copied part of the materialunder licence, and the remaining permission did not meet requirements.1.
