VT/0347/0801/2M/220607Second Milka Bliznakov Prize F<strong>in</strong>alistsThe Milka Bliznakov Prize, conferred <strong>in</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> research thatadvances knowledge <strong>of</strong> women’s contributions to architecture andrelated design fields, was created to encourage the use and growth<strong>of</strong> the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Archive</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> (IAWA). TheBoard <strong>of</strong> Advisors <strong>of</strong> the IAWA follow<strong>in</strong>g a two-stage processpresents this annual prize <strong>of</strong> $1000. The first stage is an open review<strong>of</strong> proposals; the second stage is by <strong>in</strong>vitation to f<strong>in</strong>alists selectedfrom the first stage submissions. Congratulations go to the sixf<strong>in</strong>alists <strong>of</strong> the Second Milka Bliznakov Prize for Research <strong>in</strong> theIAWA, who were announced 1 December 2001. These six f<strong>in</strong>alistswill complete their projects by September 1, 2002 for the secondstage jury and the f<strong>in</strong>al award: Sarah Bassnett (Toronto, ON),“Cultural Politics and Historiography: Mapp<strong>in</strong>g Fem<strong>in</strong>ist Writ<strong>in</strong>g onCanadian and American <strong>Architecture</strong>”; Judith Hidden Lanius(Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C.), “On Gertrude Sawyer (1895-1996)”; ElizabethBirm<strong>in</strong>gham (Fargo, ND), “Search<strong>in</strong>g for Marion Mahony: Gender,Erasure, & the Discourse <strong>of</strong> Architectural Studies”; Terry L. Hana is comprised <strong>of</strong> five partners— all women. One <strong>of</strong> the partners, Kyoko Takeda, has k<strong>in</strong>dlydonated a plan <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fice renovation that established this firm asa model <strong>of</strong> collaborative management and mutual help. She mentionsthat through their flexible schedule and approach to shar<strong>in</strong>g the workthroughout the design effort, they try to “reflect the women’s view onarchitecture and design good build<strong>in</strong>gs through collaboration andfriendly relationships with clients.” She also donated the 20thanniversary publication <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Women</strong>’s Design Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals Groupentitled “The Greedy Concerto, Second Movement.” The publicationtraces the organization from 1976 when there were 35 members to1996 when 158 members comprised this group <strong>of</strong> Japanese women.They called themselves the “greedy concerto” because they hadbeen told they were be<strong>in</strong>g greedy by “want<strong>in</strong>g to be a wife, a mother,and a pr<strong>of</strong>essional.” The group aspires to “mak<strong>in</strong>g communities withthe daily user <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d.”We are very grateful to all Japanese women who donatedexamples <strong>of</strong> their work to the IAWA.Milka Bliznakov and Donna Dunay8
