VT/0347/0801/2M/220607Second Milka Bliznakov Prize FinalistsThe Milka Bliznakov Prize, conferred in recognition of research thatadvances knowledge of women’s contributions to architecture andrelated design fields, was created to encourage the use and growthof the International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA). TheBoard of Advisors of the IAWA following a two-stage processpresents this annual prize of $1000. The first stage is an open reviewof proposals; the second stage is by invitation to finalists selectedfrom the first stage submissions. Congratulations go to the sixfinalists of the Second Milka Bliznakov Prize for Research in theIAWA, who were announced 1 December 2001. These six finalistswill complete their projects by September 1, 2002 for the secondstage jury and the final award: Sarah Bassnett (Toronto, ON),“Cultural Politics and Historiography: Mapping Feminist Writing onCanadian and American Architecture”; Judith Hidden Lanius(Washington, D.C.), “On Gertrude Sawyer (1895-1996)”; ElizabethBirmingham (Fargo, ND), “Searching for Marion Mahony: Gender,Erasure, & the Discourse of Architectural Studies”; Terry L. Clements(Blacksburg, VA), “Where are the Women in Landscape Architecture?A Proposal to Find Out”; Catherine W. Zipf (Charlottsville, VA),“Mentors and Students: Building the Community of Female Architects”The Third Milka Bliznakov Prize will commence with afirst review of submissions. Proposals consist of a 250-500-wordabstract that must be postmarked by 1 September 2002. Projectsmay include original design work or scholarly research relative tothe IAWA collections, and which will contribute to and advance therecognition of women in design. Hana is comprised of five partners— all women. One of the partners, Kyoko Takeda, has kindlydonated a plan of the office renovation that established this firm asa model of collaborative management and mutual help. She mentionsthat through their flexible schedule and approach to sharing the workthroughout the design effort, they try to “reflect the women’s view onarchitecture and design good buildings through collaboration andfriendly relationships with clients.” She also donated the 20thanniversary publication of the Women’s Design Professionals Groupentitled “The Greedy Concerto, Second Movement.” The publicationtraces the organization from 1976 when there were 35 members to1996 when 158 members comprised this group of Japanese women.They called themselves the “greedy concerto” because they hadbeen told they were being greedy by “wanting to be a wife, a mother,and a professional.” The group aspires to “making communities withthe daily user in mind.”We are very grateful to all Japanese women who donatedexamples of their work to the IAWA.Milka Bliznakov and Donna Dunay8
