humanity and disrupt the cycle of conflict, violence and societal disharmonyhas been demonstrated repeatedly bythe two previously mentioned developments. Now, combined with the proliferationof massive collaborationtechnologies – made evident by thelarge scale successes of MySpace,YouTube, Second Life and Wikipedia– these two social endeavors can bescientifically explored to discovertheir ability to impact social harmony.Imagine a massive global collaborativeof peace-creating groups whosepurpose is social harmony, comprisedof members from every religion, meditationpractice and indigenous group. They would come together locally andglobally, learn how to apply the findingsof prior social studies, and developan open-source technology that validatedthe social harmonizing effectsof their combined efforts. One of the products of their collaborationwould be a “social harmonyindex” reflective of the value in socialcapital gained by their efforts. Theywould regularly monitor indicators ofsocial harmony and coherence, like thelevel and severity of emergency calls, crime statistics, socially responsibleinvesting, and other real-time datasources. They would then feed thatcomposite index back to participatinggroups over mobile phones, podcasts, television, radio and the Internet. This index would serve as a socialcoherence feedback signal that wouldhelp integrate all the diverse tendenciesin society for a mutually enhancingcommon good. This will educateand empower ever-larger numbers ofpeople to participate in the most effectivepeace-making program everdeveloped. One that puts the power ofpeace in the hands of those who benefitmost: the individual. This would beideal for the Millennium Project of theUnited Nations University and incorporatedin their annual State of theFuture publication. When this is done, peace may well bewithin our reach, and science can helpus get there.Joseph R. Some discontents result in interest-basedconflict – for example, competition forresources (food, water, energy, etc.) and livingspace. Other stressors, especially in this era ofrapid change, include deculturation, loss of one’sway of life, and loss of one’s sense of stability andidentity. This, in turn, typically leads to overidentificationwith one’s “tribe” or ethnic group ina binary “us-them” sense that sows the seeds ofvalue-based conflict – sometimes reinforced by asense of past injustices and a perceived need forredress. Superimposed on this backdrop is thetendency of those who feel marginalized to find asense of identity in street gangs, terrorist groups, etc. What promise does the human-based peacetechnology presented in this article hold for mitigatingboth interest-based and identity-based conflict?Does peace need to begin at the individual level? Why or why not? Some present-day societies and cultures valueconstant stimulation, diversion, and a fast pace oflife – all now facilitated by IT as the worldbecomes more wired and people feel increasingpressures to stay “plugged in.” Taken to excess, this lifestyle is the very antithesis of “down time”and the regular practice of meditation and contemplation. At the same time, there is increasingdissatisfaction with the fast pace of life or socalled“rat race.” Considering all of these factors, will the human-based peace technology discussedin this article (or something similar) become morecommonplace in Western cultures in 2015 – orwill the fast pace of life prevail?64 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007
