Achieving High Standards by Demanding ExcellenceStr<strong>at</strong>egies for Supporting <strong>Pupil</strong>ProgressAcademic Year 2012 /13<strong>Longfield</strong> Academy of SportThe <strong>Pupil</strong> <strong>Premium</strong> is an alloc<strong>at</strong>ion of additional funding provided to schools to supportspecific groups of children who are vulnerable to possible underachievement, includingpupils who are entitled to free school meals, those looked after by the local authorityand the children of armed service personnel.All schools are required to report on the amount of funding received and how this isbeing used. Once inform<strong>at</strong>ion is available, the impact of the funding will also bereported.For the academic year 2012/13, <strong>Longfield</strong> School will receive £144,000 in <strong>Pupil</strong> <strong>Premium</strong>funding. Following a review of the support available for pupil progress, the <strong>Pupil</strong><strong>Premium</strong> has been used been used in order to implement a whole school str<strong>at</strong>egy‘Action for Progress’ as well as funding several other initi<strong>at</strong>ives aimed to improve pupilprogress.


Achieving High Standards by Demanding ExcellenceWh<strong>at</strong> is it?Action for ProgressAction for Progress is a whole school str<strong>at</strong>egy th<strong>at</strong> identifies any pupil who requires extra support in orderto make expected progress across a range of subjects. Every half term, members of the Senior Leadershipteam meet in order to identify these pupils by looking <strong>at</strong> assessment and other d<strong>at</strong>a.<strong>Longfield</strong> Academy of SportHow does it work?Once the pupils are identified, the year leader puts together an action plan for the pupil th<strong>at</strong> is tailored tothem. Actions may include things like behaviour targets, after school sessions, help from the form tutoror completion of homework. The year leader liaises closely with parents who are informed when theirchild is placed on an action plan.Wh<strong>at</strong> happens next?During the half term, the year leader monitors the pupil’s actions closely in order to ensure they arehaving the required impact. If, <strong>at</strong> the end of the half term the pupil has made progress ,they will nolonger require an action plan.Who is involved?All staff, from form tutors to Curriculum Leaders, may be involved in this process – each department willrun an after school ‘Action for Progress session. In addition, order to support Action for Progress andother progress str<strong>at</strong>egies, the SEN department has been re-developed in a new area of the school and isknown as ‘Support for Learning’. A new department has been cre<strong>at</strong>ed, ‘Behaviour for Learning’ wherepupils work with a learning mentor in order to minimise the effect of neg<strong>at</strong>ive behaviour on theirprogress and th<strong>at</strong> of others.


Achieving High Standards by Demanding ExcellenceHelping all <strong>Pupil</strong>s to Make Progress<strong>Longfield</strong> Academy of Sport‣ Most pupils will require support <strong>at</strong> some time during their time <strong>at</strong> school.Depending on the pupils needs, there are various ways we can do this, fromhelping them to buy school uniform or paying for enrichment activities.‣ Sometimes, other curriculum opportunities are made available for pupilswhere a full timetable is not appropri<strong>at</strong>e. For example in years 7 and 8, somepupils may spend time in the Nurture Room in order to help them developtheir literacy, numeracy and social and emotional skills. Older pupils may takea specialist course or take part in work experience.‣ In addition to the normal school day, support is available for pupils beforeschool, <strong>at</strong> lunch times and after school in the form of reading clubs, homeworkclubs and subject area Action for Progress sessions.‣ Some members of staff have roles th<strong>at</strong> enable them to help pupils with specificneeds such as Teaching Assistants, Learning Mentors

This will include learning mentor roles, work closelywith curriculum areas in order to target these pupils in order toenable them to make progress.The focus of the Support for Learning department is to supportpupils during lesson times.
