Broadcast fromStudio 4A in Washington, D.C.During the 1930s and 1940s, many black schoolsin the U.S. fielded traveling swing bands to keeptheir doors open during the Depression. NarratorTonea Stewart profiles three of the era’s mostfamous bands in “Swingtime,” an hourlongshowcase of the Bama State Collegians,the Prairie View Co-eds and the InternationalSweethearts of Rhythm. Stewart artfully weavesthe era’s music around interviews with survivingband members, scholarly commentary and archivalsound from now-deceased band members,including the great Erskine Hawkins. The travelingensembles influenced mainstream musicon a grand scale.
