Preserving the Past:
A World-Renowned Automobile
Collection and National
Historic Landmark

CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
Sometimes we long-time supporters and frequent
visitors to our museum forget the awe and
excitement we felt on our first visit. It is refreshing to
know that every year brings more first-time visitors.
Comments from our
guestbook tell us that
first-timers return home
with memories of a
wonderful experience
and an appreciation
for the cars that were
made by the Auburn
Automobile Company
that resided here.
This past year has seen
steady growth in many
indicators: attendance
was up by more than 4
percent; three significant cars were added to our
collection; record attendance was recorded at our
annual Labor Day Benefit Extravaganza; and 133
items were added to our Archives.
While all museums are experiencing the effect of
economic times, your Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Automobile Museum has prudently trimmed costs
where possible. The support of our volunteers,
trustees and members have allowed operations
to continue unabated. We continue to be open
362 days a year and continue to improve the visitor
experience.
A key focus for everyone at the museum is
educational programming. School groups, car
clubs, researchers and auto aficionados all come to
the museum to learn about the Auburn Automobile
Company, its cars and the industry. We are a
recognized source for automotive information and
education.
The museum’s board of trustees is now preparing
for the next chapter in our story. Strategic planning
is underway that will take your museum to the next
level of excellence. It will include more interactive
displays, improved interpretation of exhibits to
connect with an increasingly younger audience,
and significant visible enhancements throughout
our campus. Watch for the exciting announcement
soon!
We have such a dedicated staff that puts it all
together. We cannot pay them enough for all
that they do to assure that we remain the finest
automobile museum anywhere. It is clearly a labor
of love for them. Thank you!
Deep appreciation, too, for the more than 100
individuals who volunteer their time as docents,
auto restorers and desk staff. They contributed
nearly 14,000 hours last year. Thanks also to those
who serve on museum committees, organize
events and lend support as trustees. Our cadre of
volunteers is a real Duesy!
I hope to see you soon in the Home of the Classics.
Jeffrey Turner
Ken and Stephanie Dunsire of Fort Wayne, Indiana,
donated this rare, supercharged 1941 Graham
Hollywood to the museum’s permanent collection
in 2011.
This stylish 1967 Tiger Sunbeam was donated to the
museum by John and Annette Mamula of Hopwood,
Pennsylvania, in 2011.
Richard and Holly (Zerwick) Anderson of South Barrington,
Illinois, donated this unique 1929 Stearns-Knight to the
museum’s permanent collection in 2011.

“One of the best showcases of cars known to man.”
“Passionate, warm, informative – a unique experience. I’ve been
to many car museums but this outshines them all!”
Volunteers of the Year
In 2011, the museum named two volunteers, Ellen Bates and
Jo-Ann Brotherton — both of whom exemplify professionalism
and personalization of service — as its 2010 Volunteers of
the Year. While these attributes are valued in all volunteers,
they are especially important in the Visitor Services area as
this includes the admissions desk, where visitors are checked
in and incoming calls are answered, and the Museum Store,
where excellent customer service is a must.
Executive Director Laura
Brinkman (right) presents a
2010 Volunteer of the Year
award and plaque to Ellen
Bates for her exemplary
service at the museum’s
2011 Annual Meeting.
More than 23 years ago, Mearl Bisel
convinced Ellen Bates and her late
husband, Howard, that they had to join
others who were trying to put a museum
together; soon they became charter
members. Howard used to work at the
Auburn Automobile Company, and he
became one of the most popular museum
docents because of his personal knowledge
of the building and the people he worked
with. Ellen was very proud of Howard, and
they were a real team, doing everything
together.
Now we are privileged to have Ellen—whose
smile always brightens a room—at the
museum two days a week. She has worked in many areas of
the museum including the galleries, admissions and several
special events such as bridal shows and wine tastings. She is
a real trooper during the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival
weekend, working many shifts, and she fills in for other
volunteers as needed.
Jo-Ann Brotherton began her tenure at the
museum in May of 2006. She came with her
husband, Bob, to a volunteer recruitment
fair. He was ready to jump in and get started,
but Jo-Ann wasn’t too sure. She wanted to
start out with something small and behind
the scenes so she began by doing bulk
mailings. After some encouragement, she
substituted for volunteers who answered
Jo-Ann Brotherton, volun- the phones. When someone was needed
teer extraordinaire, is one
to fill-in at the admissions desk, she tried
of two 2010 Volunteers of
the Year named and cel-
that. Jo-Ann preformed all these duties with
ebrated at the museum’s exceptional customer service and attention
2011 Annual Meeting. to detail. She also coined one of the best
lines for greeting visitors, one that helps set
the tone for an exciting museum tour: “Welcome to the World
Headquarters of the Auburn Automobile Company!”
Jo-Ann loves to work at special events, especially the museum’s
Bridal Show. Because of the knowledge, professionalism and
the personal attention she gives everyone who walks in the
door, she is the trainer for many new Visitor Services volunteers.
She also volunteers each day of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Festival weekend. We are glad this volunteer took a chance
on something small when she started because she is now one
of the museum’s biggest assets.
Roger Ellert volunteered nearly 600 hours
of time in 2011 keeping the museum’s
automobile collection looking beautiful.
Automotive volunteers (from left to right)
Robert Probst, Ralph DePalo and Chuck
Schmidt take pride and joy in keeping the
museum’s collection in tip-top shape.
“Although one of 2010’s
Volunteers of Year has been with
the museum for many years and
the other a much shorter time,
they both exhibit volunteerism
at its best: they wholeheartely
support our organization, our
mission, and especially their
fellow volunteers.”
Building
The museum building was constructed by the Auburn
Automobile Company in 1929, after a design by A.M.
Strauss of Fort Wayne. It is one of the finest examples of art
deco architecture in the Midwest. The Auburn Automobile
Company administration building housed the corporate
showroom, executive and general
offices, engineering and experimental
departments, design studios
and telephone switchboards until
the company’s end in 1937. The
museum building is considered to
be its most significant artifact.

On Thursday, September 1, 2011, the Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Automobile Museum held its Sixth Annual
Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum Benefit
Extravaganza. The theme for the premier fundraising event
was “Glitz & Glam,” celebrating the classic automobiles
and their beautiful hood ornaments, as well as the
spokeswomen and talented personalities who added the
glamour and flair that helped sell cars at auto shows.
Each year since 2005, the museum, an educational
nonprofit 501(c)(3), has relied on Extravaganza participants
and attendees to give generously to help support its
educational programs. This includes its Public Admissions
program, Archives offerings and Study Trips that meet
Indiana Academic Standards for students.
At 2011’s event, over 350 guests enjoyed drinks and
hors d’oeuvres, mingled with old and new friends, and
browsed through Silent Auction items — ranging from a
Porsche Driving Experience in Europe to a Glitz & Glamour
Photo Exhibit gleaned from the museum’s Archives to a
top-of-the-line Meguiar’s Buffer Kit. Museum Chairman
Jeffrey Turner invited the group to be seated in the
museum’s grand hall for dinner, where guests enjoyed a
sumptuous meal served on
tables dressed in striking
aqua and zebra-print linens.
Rhinestone accents, faux
jewels, and framed pictures
of alluring models and movie
stars posing with cars from
the Auburn Automobile
Company added just the
right touch of “glitz and
glam.”
After dinner, Mike Eikenberry,
museum vice chairman,
announced the end of the
Silent Auction. Turner, Robert
Pass, museum president
emeritus, and museum
Trustee Bob Joynt, assisted by
Trustee Ken Merusi, served as
emcees.
sixth annual
Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum Benefit
Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Automobile Museum
2011 Benefit Extravaganza
Automobiles auctioned at the event are never taken from
the museum’s collection. To acquire auction cars each
year, a museum-appointed committee looks for individual
owners who want to sell their cars at the Extravaganza
auction. Buyers and sellers pledge a donation to the
museum’s educational programming. To get the most
support possible for the museum, the committee reviews
a wide variety of makes, models and price points, then
chooses cars that, they think, will draw the most interest
and attention from Extravaganza attendees.
The 2012 Benefit Extravaganza will be on Thursday, August
30 at 6:00 p.m. Its theme, Racers and Record-Setters, pays
tribute to the men and machines that raised the bar of
automotive engineering during the formative days of
the Auburn Automobile Company. The ticket price per
person is $150. Event sponsorships that include tickets are
also available; this is a great way to get your business
recognized by a premier crowd of serious car collectors
and enthusiasts. Contact Jan Schippers at 260-925-1444 or
jans@automobilemuseum.org for tickets or information.
