<strong>Nasher</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> at <strong>Duke</strong> University2013‐2014 <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Bios</str<strong>on</strong>g>Michelle Beischer is a graduate <strong>of</strong> Smith College and Wake Forest University School <strong>of</strong> Law. Up<strong>on</strong>obtaining her law degree, she moved to Durham where she practiced law. She is a community volunteerand has been active with the Junior League <strong>of</strong> Durham and Orange Counties, Westminster PresbyterianChurch and Durham Academy. She is current past President <strong>of</strong> the Durham Academy ParentsAssociati<strong>on</strong> and a former board member <strong>of</strong> the Durham Academy <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Trustees. She lives inDurham with her husband David and s<strong>on</strong>s Will, Nick and Davis.Gail Belvett received her B.Sc. in Microbiology and Immunology with a minor in Linguistics from McGillUniversity in M<strong>on</strong>treal, Quebec. In 1997, Gail moved to Chapel Hill to attend UNC‐Chapel Hill School <strong>of</strong>Dentistry. She was awarded her doctor <strong>of</strong> dental surgery in 2001. After a hospital residency in NewYork City, Gail moved to Atlanta and joined a dental practice. In 2007, Gail returned to Durham andopened a private practice, Southpoint Family Dentistry. In May 2011 she opened her sec<strong>on</strong>d practice inMebane, NC. Gail’s appreciati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the arts began early in life—her parents were avid art collectors.She completed an internship at the Royal Ontario <strong>Museum</strong> and studied piano and music theory with theRoyal C<strong>on</strong>servatory <strong>of</strong> Music in Tor<strong>on</strong>to, Ontario. Gail is a member <strong>of</strong> the Old North State Dental Societythrough which she mentors current and aspiring minority dental students at UNC School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry.Gail also serves <strong>on</strong> the Millennium Development Goals Subcommittee (part <strong>of</strong> the Episcopal Diocese <strong>of</strong>North Carolina's Chartered Committee for Global Missi<strong>on</strong>).Brad Brinegar has been chairman and CEO <strong>of</strong> McKinney since 2002. An anthropology major atDartmouth College with a finance MBA from Columbia University, Brinegar worked for two decades atglobal advertising giant Leo Burnett in Chicago. He co‐founded the Durham Roundtable Committee <strong>on</strong>Crime and is the new chairman <strong>of</strong> the board <strong>of</strong> the Hill Center. He and his wife, Michelle, live in Durhamwith two teenage s<strong>on</strong>s.Jennings Brody owns and operates Parker & Otis, established in Durham in 2007. She is a volunteer inthe community currently serving with the Volunteer Center <strong>of</strong> Durham and Sustain‐a‐Bull, Durham’sn<strong>on</strong>‐pr<strong>of</strong>it independent business alliance, which strives to promote and support locally owned,independent businesses in the Durham community. Jennings lives in Durham with her husband andbusiness partner, J<strong>on</strong>athan Kea and their daughter, Miller. Jennings grew up in C<strong>on</strong>necticut andgraduated from Bates College in Maine where she majored in <strong>Art</strong> History and Political Science.Ruth Caccavale Since her recent move to North Carolina, Ruth Caccavale works part‐time in theeducati<strong>on</strong> department <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nasher</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>. She works primarily as a gallery guide, sharing theexhibiti<strong>on</strong>s with school children, college students and the adult community. She works <strong>on</strong> othereducati<strong>on</strong>al projects such as special events and visits to school classrooms. Ruth also teaches art historyin <strong>Duke</strong> University’s c<strong>on</strong>tinuing educati<strong>on</strong> department. For ten years prior to this, she taught a variety<strong>of</strong> art history classes at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Ruth worked for Tiffany & Company as theircurator for antique silver and jewelry and was a free‐lance lecturer during a three‐year period inEngland. Her first jobs after college were in the educati<strong>on</strong> department <strong>of</strong> the Metropolitan <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Art</strong> and the Cloisters <strong>Museum</strong> in New York City. She has been involved in philanthropic activities andtogether with her husband, raised three children. Her husband John, currently runs the Financial


Ec<strong>on</strong>omics Center at <strong>Duke</strong> Universtiy. Ruth received her undergraduate degree from <strong>Duke</strong> Universityand a masters in art history from Rutgers University.Deborah DeMott joined the faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> Law School in 1975 after practicing law with a large law firmin New York City. She taught at other universities in the United States, Canada, and Hungary, and was aFulbright Senior Scholar in Australia in 1986. From 1998‐2000, Deborah held a sec<strong>on</strong>dary appointmentin the Law Department <strong>of</strong> the L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Ec<strong>on</strong>omics and Political Science. Over her career, shehas taught courses in corporate law and other aspects <strong>of</strong> business law and, more recently, she teachestort law to first‐year law students. Her books and articles focus <strong>on</strong> fiduciary obligati<strong>on</strong>s, corporatetransacti<strong>on</strong>s, the law <strong>of</strong> agency (i.e. relati<strong>on</strong>ships in which <strong>on</strong>e pers<strong>on</strong> represents another), am<strong>on</strong>g othertopics. She graduated from Swarthmore College and New York University School <strong>of</strong> Law and spent herearly years in DuBois, PA, where her mother was a practicing artist and a public‐school art teacher. Shedeveloped the first course in <strong>Art</strong> Law at <strong>Duke</strong> Law School five years ago. In the course, studentsexamine legal c<strong>on</strong>cepts that underpin transacti<strong>on</strong>s and legal interests in art objects, including questi<strong>on</strong>s<strong>of</strong> ownership and authenticity. The course also examines specific legal issues associated with artmuseums as distinctive cultural instituti<strong>on</strong>s. She has taught versi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> this course as well to graduatestudents in law at the University <strong>of</strong> Sydney and Central European University in Budapest.Kathi Eas<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Durham, NC relocated from Dallas, TX where she served <strong>on</strong> the Dallas Symph<strong>on</strong>yOrchestra board and was president <strong>of</strong> their young patr<strong>on</strong>s group. A native Texan, Kathi also served <strong>on</strong>the board <strong>of</strong> the Dallas Auxiliary Gladney Center and a lunche<strong>on</strong> committee for the Komen Foundati<strong>on</strong>.In Durham, she has served <strong>on</strong> the steering committee for the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Full</str<strong>on</strong>g> Frame Documentary Film Festival. Herhusband, Stephen A. Eas<strong>on</strong>, is Executive Vice President <strong>of</strong> Smith Breeden Associates, Inc.Pierce Freel<strong>on</strong> is a musician, pr<strong>of</strong>essor, and artivist with a passi<strong>on</strong> for creativity and community. He isfr<strong>on</strong>t man <strong>of</strong> the genre‐bending The Beast, hailed as a "natural, engaging blend <strong>of</strong> jazz and hip hop," byJazz Times Magazine. He has taught music, African American studies and political science at theUniversity <strong>of</strong> North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University. Freel<strong>on</strong> is the c<strong>of</strong>ounder<strong>of</strong> ARTVSM ‐ a company merging art and activism by any medium necessary.Christopher Gergen is founding Executive Director <strong>of</strong> Bull City Forward, a n<strong>on</strong>‐pr<strong>of</strong>it focused <strong>on</strong>catalyzing sustainable enterprise in Durham, NC—an effort that is quickly becoming a model for othercities including the launch <strong>of</strong> Queen City Forward in Charlotte. Bull City Forward complementsChristopher’s role as an adjunct faculty member at the Entrepreneurial Leadership Initiative at <strong>Duke</strong>University within the Terry Sanford School <strong>of</strong> Public Policy's Hart Leadership Program as well as hispositi<strong>on</strong> as “Innovator in Residence” at the Center for Creative Leadership. Christopher is also afounding partner <strong>of</strong> Life Entrepreneurs, LLC, a leadership development and c<strong>on</strong>sulting firm, and coauthor<strong>of</strong> the nati<strong>on</strong>ally acclaimed book Life Entrepreneurs: Ordinary People Creating ExtraordinaryLives (Warren Bennis Leadership Series; Jossey‐Bass). Christopher also co‐authors a bi‐weekly column<strong>on</strong> social innovati<strong>on</strong> for the Raleigh News & Observer and the Charlotte Observer titled “Doing Better atDoing Good.” Christopher received a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>s with h<strong>on</strong>ors from <strong>Duke</strong> University, a Master'sDegree in Public Policy from the George Washingt<strong>on</strong> University, and his MBA from GeorgetownUniversity. He lives with his wife and two children in Durham, NC.Michael Goodm<strong>on</strong> leads <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the country's most dynamic urban mixed‐use developments, theAmerican Tobacco Campus in Durham. As vice president <strong>of</strong> real estate for Capitol BroadcastingCompany, Inc., the campus' owner and master developer, Michael manages the day‐to‐day activities <strong>of</strong>approximately 1,000,000 square feet <strong>of</strong> class A <strong>of</strong>fice, restaurant and retail space. He scopes and


develops new projects and opportunities, and has assembled a multitude <strong>of</strong> complex Historic and NewMarket Tax Credit transacti<strong>on</strong>s. He earned a B.S. in Mathematical Ec<strong>on</strong>omics from Hampden‐SydneyCollege and a Masters in Trust and Investment Management from Campbell University. Michael is anadvocate and leader <strong>of</strong> the Durham and Triangle communities and serves <strong>on</strong> several boards toencourage growth, entrepreneurship and community development. These boards include: City <strong>of</strong>Durham Workforce Ec<strong>on</strong>omic and Employment Development, East Durham Children’s Initiative, HealingPlace <strong>of</strong> Wake County, Downtown Durham, Inc., NC Rails to Trails, CAHEC, and the <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> DurhamHistory.Bryan Huffman is the Executive Branch Director <strong>of</strong> the Durham YMCAs, a divisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the YMCA <strong>of</strong> theTriangle, the 10th largest Y in the country. Bryan has been with the YMCA for 17 years, the last six inDurham. Under his leadership, the Durham YMCAs have become <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the premier n<strong>on</strong>‐pr<strong>of</strong>its inDurham serving over 20,000 Durham citizens annually in youth development and healthy living. Bryanhas an undergraduate business degree and an MBA, both from North Carolina State University. He livesin Durham with his wife and two young children.Virginia “Ginger” Jernigan is a graduate <strong>of</strong> C<strong>on</strong>verse College, and a dedicated wife, mother andvolunteer. Her volunteer work has included a l<strong>on</strong>gtime commitment to Christ Church, including servingas President <strong>of</strong> the Altar Guild, as a member <strong>of</strong> the Church Leadership Council, as a member <strong>of</strong> theMinisterial Search Committee, as a Diocesan Delegate, as a Lay Eucharist Minister and as a ChaliceBearer. Ginger was <strong>on</strong> the Junior League <strong>of</strong> Raleigh <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Directors for many years, serving as aChairman <strong>of</strong> committees and as Treasurer, was <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> three Ravenscr<strong>of</strong>t Day School's first Aucti<strong>on</strong> Co‐Chairs, an Interact Aucti<strong>on</strong> Co‐Chair, a Co‐Chair <strong>of</strong> the Wake County Heart Ball, and a member <strong>of</strong> the NCTheatre <strong>Board</strong>. She has been a member <strong>of</strong> the Raleigh Fine <strong>Art</strong>s Society for 17 years and <strong>on</strong> the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong>Directors for the past 12 years. While serving <strong>on</strong> the RFAS <strong>Board</strong>, she was Chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Art</strong>istsExhibiti<strong>on</strong> (2001‐2002), Secretary (2002‐2003), Treasurer (2007‐2008), President (2008‐2009) and iscurrently Chairman <strong>of</strong> the New Members Committee for 2010‐2011. Ginger lives in Raleigh, NC with herhusband, John, who is a lawyer. They have two children, Lee‐Ashley, a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> University, andFrank, a graduate <strong>of</strong> Davids<strong>on</strong> College.Stefanie Kahn attended Columbia University (MBA) and Washingt<strong>on</strong> University (BA). Stefanie served <strong>on</strong>the Mary Semans Gala Host Committee 2009. She has served <strong>on</strong> the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Carolina Ballet for thepast five years, and the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Raleigh/Cary Jewish Federati<strong>on</strong>. She has been a docent at the NorthCarolina <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>. Stefanie worked in Credit Card Marketing at American Express for 10 yearsprior to moving to Raleigh 17 years ago. Stefanie is married to Douglas James Kahn. They have threechildren: Lauren, a senior at <strong>Duke</strong> and Michael, recent graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>Duke</strong>, and Daniel, who attends CaryAcademy.David Lindquist has been an antiques dealer, appraiser, author and educator since 1974, when hefinished his Graduate School work in Political Science at <strong>Duke</strong> University and opened a business ratherthan accept a university teaching positi<strong>on</strong>. He c<strong>on</strong>verted his passi<strong>on</strong>ate hobby (and graduate schoolsideline) into a business in order to keep his family in the Triangle‐‐a regi<strong>on</strong> with which they had fallen inlove. David has his undergraduate degree from Drury University in Springfield, Missouri‐‐his home state.(Ir<strong>on</strong>ically Drury w<strong>on</strong> this years NCAA Divisi<strong>on</strong> II nati<strong>on</strong>al champi<strong>on</strong>ship!) He has served <strong>on</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong>nati<strong>on</strong>al boards in the antiques field (including President <strong>of</strong> The Nati<strong>on</strong>al Associati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Dealers inAntiques) as well as area civic and church boards. For the past fifteen years he has served as Chairman<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> The Chamber Orchestra <strong>of</strong> the Triangle (www.thecot.org) guiding the effort to create forThe COT a permanent home at the Durham Carolina Theater where over the last fourteen years


attendance at c<strong>on</strong>certs has grown from less than two hundred to frequently filling the theater. He andhis daughter Elizabeth own Whitehall Antiques in Chapel Hill, located in the Villa Tempesta which thefamily restored in 1990. David's life partner is Paul Hrusovsky, artist and beloved art teacher for over 30years in St. Louis and Chapel Hill. They are in the process <strong>of</strong> moving to a 140 West Franklin Streetc<strong>on</strong>dominium where in additi<strong>on</strong> to their years <strong>of</strong> support for Durham arts organizati<strong>on</strong>s and the <strong>Nasher</strong><strong>Museum</strong>, they will c<strong>on</strong>tinue their involvement in the arts scene <strong>of</strong> Chapel Hill as Paul prepares to openhis new studio and art gallery in downtown at The Courtyard.Mac McCaughan is a founding member <strong>of</strong> the rock band Superchunk, and co‐founder <strong>of</strong> Merge Recordsal<strong>on</strong>g with Laura Ballance. He also heads the band Portastatic, which began as a lo‐fi side project andhas blossomed into his main musical project. Prior to this, he was the head <strong>of</strong> another lo‐fi band namedBricks with Andrew Webster <strong>of</strong> Tsunami, Josh Phillips and Laura Cantrell. In 2002, McCaughan teamedup with Robert Pollard <strong>of</strong> Guided By Voices to form the group Go Back Snowball. The duo recorded andreleased an album in 2002, titled Calling Zero. On October 24, 2007, McCaughan gave expert witnesstestim<strong>on</strong>y in the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee <strong>on</strong> the topic "The Future <strong>of</strong> Radio."Lori O’Keefe Triangle Community Foundati<strong>on</strong>’s Vice President for Philanthropic Services and ChiefOperating Officer, helps cultivate relati<strong>on</strong>ships with the Foundati<strong>on</strong>’s fundholders to createopportunities for strategic grantmaking within the Triangle n<strong>on</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>it community. In additi<strong>on</strong> to directlymanaging more than 150 d<strong>on</strong>or‐advised funds, she also works with <strong>members</strong> <strong>of</strong> the d<strong>on</strong>or engagement,community engagement and development teams <strong>on</strong> fundholder and community outreach andinitiatives. In her role as Chief Operating Officer, Lori is resp<strong>on</strong>sible for the day‐to‐day operati<strong>on</strong>s andservices <strong>of</strong> TCF, which manages more than 750 funds and $145 milli<strong>on</strong> in charitable assets that supportthe regi<strong>on</strong>. A life‐l<strong>on</strong>g devotee <strong>of</strong> the arts with an MBA specializing in arts and n<strong>on</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>it administrati<strong>on</strong>,Lori has held positi<strong>on</strong>s in the areas <strong>of</strong> development and events management in various arts venuesincluding Carolina Ballet, the Brooklyn Academy <strong>of</strong> Music and New York University. Lori has participatedin the Leadership Triangle and Leadership Raleigh programs, and has presented locally and regi<strong>on</strong>ally <strong>on</strong>philanthropy and charitable giving. Lori lives in Wake Forest with her husband and two daughters.Pilar Rocha‐Goldberg is a native from Bogotá, Colombia and currently works as President/CEO at ElCentro Hispano, Inc. a n<strong>on</strong>‐pr<strong>of</strong>it organizati<strong>on</strong> that helps the Latino community to integrate with thecommunity at large in Durham and Orange County, NC. A nutriti<strong>on</strong>ist for 20+ years, she arrived in theUnited States in 2004 and immediately started working <strong>on</strong> programs helping Latinos. In collaborati<strong>on</strong>with <strong>Duke</strong> University, she translated and then implemented a Nutriti<strong>on</strong> Program into Spanish, and moreimportantly, tailored it in order to fit the Latino culture. She joined El Centro Hispano in 2004 and hasworked <strong>on</strong> many projects. She has served as secretary, vice‐president and president <strong>of</strong> El CentroHispano’s board <strong>of</strong> directors. Since becoming involved with the community, she has been invited andparticipated in many forums, c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>s and seminars and groups including: Chair <strong>of</strong> the Chr<strong>on</strong>icDiseases Team, which was part <strong>of</strong> the Hispanic/Latino Health Advisory Group at the Office <strong>of</strong> MinorityHealth and Health Disparities in Raleigh, NC.; and North Carolina Representative at the Nati<strong>on</strong>alPartnership for Acti<strong>on</strong> in Atlanta, GA. She is also a member <strong>of</strong> Triangle Colombian ResourcesAssociati<strong>on</strong>, The Durham County Project Access <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Directors, North East Central DurhamLeadership Council, The Governor’s Advisory Council <strong>of</strong> Hispanic/Latino Affairs, Habitat for Humanity<strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Directors, Lincoln Community Foundati<strong>on</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Directors and the Durham YMCA <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong>Directors.<strong>Art</strong>hur Henry Rogers III heads Eno Ventures, a commercial real estate investment and managementcompany with <strong>of</strong>fice and retail properties in Durham and Albemarle, NC. Prior to 2002, he worked in


internati<strong>on</strong>al sales with Collins and Aikman Products Company and was based in Roxboro, NC withfrequent travel to California and Japan. After leaving Collins and Aikman in 2000 to pursue his interestin commercial real estate, <strong>Art</strong>hur worked for two years as a broker with Borden Real Estate in Durham.Henry Sappenfield is a trial attorney at Kenn<strong>on</strong> Craver, PLLC in Durham where he represents the firm’slocal and regi<strong>on</strong>al clients. Henry was born and raised in Tulsa, OK. After receiving his undergraduatedegree from the University <strong>of</strong> Tulsa, Henry worked as an archaeologist and completed graduate work atthe University <strong>of</strong> Tor<strong>on</strong>to. Henry received his J.D. from Bost<strong>on</strong> College Law School and practiced inBost<strong>on</strong> for seven years. Henry, his wife Elizabeth, and their young s<strong>on</strong> attend St. Phillips EpiscopalChurch and are actively involved in Durham, supporting the <strong>Nasher</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>, Preservati<strong>on</strong> Durham,Triangle Modernist Houses, Urban Ministries <strong>of</strong> Durham and the Greater Durham Chamber <strong>of</strong>Commerce.Kim Saunders is the President and CEO <strong>of</strong> Mechanics and Farmers (M&F) Bank, a $280+ milli<strong>on</strong>instituti<strong>on</strong> based in the North Carolina's five major cities, Durham, Raleigh, Greensboro,Winst<strong>on</strong>‐Salem and Charlotte. Before coming to M&F, Kim was President and CEO at C<strong>on</strong>solidated Bankand Trust Company from 2003 to 2007. She was the sec<strong>on</strong>d female President and CEO in CB&T'shistory, a distincti<strong>on</strong> she also holds at M&F Bank. Prior to joining C<strong>on</strong>solidated, Kim was the ExecutiveVice President and Chief Lending Officer for City First Bank <strong>of</strong> D.C. ("City First"), a $100 milli<strong>on</strong>community development bank chartered by the Office <strong>of</strong> the Comptroller <strong>of</strong> the Currency that isdedicated to promoting investment in Washingt<strong>on</strong>, D.C.'s under‐served communities. Prior to joiningCity First Bank <strong>of</strong> DC, she served as the Chief Lending Officer and Executive Vice President at EnterpriseFederal Savings Bank in Largo, Maryland from 1995 to 1998. Kim serves <strong>on</strong> the <strong>Board</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the NC<strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> Foundati<strong>on</strong>, Triangle United Way, and the Greater Durham Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce. Shewas recognized as <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the state's excepti<strong>on</strong>al women leaders in 2009 by both NC Magazine and theTriangle Business Leader Media Magazine. She also has been recognized as <strong>on</strong>e the Nati<strong>on</strong>'s 75 MostPowerful Women in Business by Black Enterprise Magazine (Feb. 2010). Kim holds a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Sciencedegree in Ec<strong>on</strong>omics (Finance major) from the Whart<strong>on</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Finance andCommerce at the University <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania, and an h<strong>on</strong>orary doctorate from Shaw University.Angela Terry retired in 2002 as Vice Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs at North Carolina Central University,where she created the Freshmen First program. She holds a PhD in Psychology and, before relocating toDurham, had a 26‐year career in C<strong>on</strong>necticut. While in CT, Angela worked for the State Department <strong>of</strong>Educati<strong>on</strong> as a State C<strong>on</strong>sultant for School Psychological Services from 1973‐ 1981, as well as workingfor the University <strong>of</strong> C<strong>on</strong>necticut where she retired as the Associate Vice President <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs in1997 (her first attempt at retirement!). She is a member <strong>of</strong> the Durham County Women’s Commissi<strong>on</strong>,president <strong>of</strong> the Associati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Retired NCCU Pers<strong>on</strong>nel, President <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nasher</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>Board</strong>,and a Diam<strong>on</strong>d Life Member <strong>of</strong> Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Durham Alumnae Chapter. Angela isalso the proud mother <strong>of</strong> two adult children.Kelly Braddy Van Winkle represents the third‐generati<strong>on</strong> within her family's company, King <strong>of</strong> TexasRo<strong>of</strong>ing Company, L.P. After 30 years <strong>of</strong> being in business, King <strong>of</strong> Texas Ro<strong>of</strong>ing Company, L.P. is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong>the largest commercial ro<strong>of</strong>ing c<strong>on</strong>tractors in the United States. Kelly is becoming heavily involved withcommittee work for the NRCA (Nati<strong>on</strong>al Ro<strong>of</strong>ing C<strong>on</strong>tractors Associati<strong>on</strong>) Kelly has been a member <strong>of</strong>the Dallas chapter <strong>of</strong> the Entrepreneurs’ Organizati<strong>on</strong> since 2006, and is the current Communicati<strong>on</strong>sChair. Her community involvement includes work with the Dallas Zoo, the Dallas Symph<strong>on</strong>y Orchestra,the Dallas <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>, and the Dallas Junior League. She has held numerous leadership roles withinthose organizati<strong>on</strong>s. Kelly received her Bachelor degree from <strong>Duke</strong> University and her MBA in


Internati<strong>on</strong>al Management Studies from University <strong>of</strong> Texas at Dallas. She is very active in the <strong>Duke</strong>community in Dallas, including c<strong>on</strong>ducting alumni admissi<strong>on</strong>s interviews for potential <strong>Duke</strong> students.She resides in University Park, Dallas with her husband, Lance Van Winkle.Carl Webb is president <strong>of</strong> Forty/AM C<strong>on</strong>sulting and a native <strong>of</strong> Durham, has been involved in several <strong>of</strong>the largest, most successful real estate development projects in Durham in the past decade. A 27‐yearveteran <strong>of</strong> the advertising and marketing communicati<strong>on</strong>s industry, he has developed relati<strong>on</strong>ships anddelivered powerful communicati<strong>on</strong>s programs for a portfolio <strong>of</strong> real estate clients. He has been involvedin several public‐private partnerships. While serving as a partner at Greenfire Development, Carl ledrelati<strong>on</strong>ship strategy and communicati<strong>on</strong> planning efforts for the Durham, NC‐based communitydevelopment company. Prior to joining Greenfire Development, Carl was co‐founder <strong>of</strong> Webb Patters<strong>on</strong>Communicati<strong>on</strong>s serving clients such as McD<strong>on</strong>ald’s, GlaxoSmithKline, Urban Ministries Inc., Allergan,the State <strong>of</strong> North Carolina, Z<strong>on</strong>dervan Publishing, Focus <strong>on</strong> the Family, and Thomas Nels<strong>on</strong> Publishing.Carl attended North Carolina Central University and graduated from the <strong>Art</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Atlanta. Hegraduated from Leadership Triangle and Leadership North Carolina, as well as the minority businessexecutive program at Dartmouth’s Tuck School <strong>of</strong> Business. Carl and his wife, Bridgette, reside inDurham and have three children, Chaunesti, Samantha, and Carl Jr.John White has served as the Director <strong>of</strong> Public Policy for The Greater Durham Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commercesince January 2009. He is resp<strong>on</strong>sible for setting The Chamber's annual legislative agenda and managingthe Chamber's Public Policy and Transportati<strong>on</strong> Committees. In this capacity, John is resp<strong>on</strong>sible forserving as a community liais<strong>on</strong> for the Chamber as well as building relati<strong>on</strong>ships with elected <strong>of</strong>ficials,n<strong>on</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>it agencies, Chamber <strong>members</strong> and other key resources and instituti<strong>on</strong>s within Durham and thesurrounding area. John graduated from North Carolina Central University in 2005. Since graduating,John has served as Legislative Assistant to North Carolina State Representative Alma S. Adams, Ph.D.,and as Community Director for Generati<strong>on</strong>Engage, a n<strong>on</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>it organizati<strong>on</strong> focused <strong>on</strong> helping youngpeople, ages 16‐30, gain a better understanding <strong>of</strong> politics. In additi<strong>on</strong> to his pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al work, Johnserves his community by sitting <strong>on</strong> the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Directors for Preservati<strong>on</strong> Durham, the Women’s Center<strong>of</strong> Wake County, Youth Villages, and as vice chair <strong>of</strong> the North Carolina Legislative Black CaucusFoundati<strong>on</strong> al<strong>on</strong>g with other local committees or charities.
