The sailing shop was closed years ago, but Douwe Gaastra’s passion fortop-level high-speed performance lives on. BarcolanaA sailing event like no otherOver 2,000 boats participate in the Barcolana regattaImagine a starting line spanning more than 1.8kilometers, with a wide variety of yachts in severalshapes and sizes lined up neatly next to each other.The Barcolana regatta, held every second Sunday inOctober in the Gulf of Trieste is one of the largestsailing races in the world. The more than 2,000crews are made up of both professionals andamateurs, which makes the Barcolana regatta atruly unique event.46 — Sponsoring

The first edition of the Barcolana regatta took place in1969 and thanks to the unique set-up of the race, itquickly became one of the most popular traditions in theinternational yachting world. Any mono-hull sailing boatover 6 meters can enter this race over 16 nautical milesin the Gulf of Trieste. This means amateurs in small 19-feetboats are racing right alongside 100-feet racing yachts withprofessional and experienced crews. At last year’s edition,no less than 25,000 sailors on some 2,000 boats wereinvolved in the race.Once the competitors set off, the Gulf of Trieste offers anamazing sight. The boats start at the Victory lighthouseand run a 16 nautical mile course over the Gulf of Trieste,around 4 buoys. The sheer mass of the fleet is one of themost impressive things you’ll ever see.
