Meypack also has an innovative andpowerful packaging solution to offer, which optimally protects fragile glass bottles by using a pre-fabricated partition inserter. A label is easily rippedor defaced by abrasion. The samegoes for bottles, which are proneto scratches during transportation. And who can say that they wantto serve their guests sumptuousBordeaux from a completelyscratched up bottle sporting atattered label? The idea: A partition inserter for alllevels of outputIn order to ensure damage-freetransport of the glass bottles in thecases, it has become common practiceto work with pre-fabricatedpartitions. These pre-fabricatedpartitions are inserted between thebottles by a servo-driven inserterhoused in a module within thepackaging machine. The pre-fabricatedpartition blanks come fromone of up to three magazines forvarying machine capacities, whichcan easily be re-filled from the sideduring operation. The shaped bottles, such as the aforementionedBordeaux bottle, range in size fromsmall 0.25 litre up to 1 litre. Themachine is also able to process sixpackcases (in a 2x3 formation) upto 24 pack cases (4x6). The formatchangeover is very simple: the entireprocess is easily executed. It isnot only simple and safe but alsoefficient. As is so often the case at Meypack, this innovative machine is basedon a proven system: the successfulVP 500 Series. And the pre-fabricatedpartition inserter is a consistentfurther development onMeypack’s tried and true partitioninserter solution. The experiencegained from the numerous customerinstallations of the partitioninserter solution was incorporatedinto the development of the newpre-fabricated partition inserter. The result is clearly visible: an innovative, high quality and exceptionallyefficient packagingmachine. But how did Meypack’s engineersdeal with the differing machinecapacities? “We use the three magazinesthat are in the system. Whenoperating at a speed of 25 cyclesper minute, one pre-fabricatedpartition inserter is used; at speedsof 50 and 60 cycles per minute, weuse 2 or respectively 3 pre-fabricatedpartition inserters,” explainedMeypack engineer Heinz Hengemühle.Pre-fabricated partition inserter systemVerpackungssystemtechnik GmbHMeypackVerpackungssystemtechnik GmbHIndustriestraße 3D-48301 Nottuln-AppelhülsenPhone: +49-25 09-94 0Fax: +49-25 09-94 81 90info@meypack.dewww.meypack.comPre-fabricated partition inserter VP 531The VP 531 WA pre-fabricated partition inserter - briefly noted:• proven VP 500 Series• consistent further development of Meypack’s partition inserter concept• efficient: 25 – 60 cycles / minute• servo-driven inserter• three integrated magazines for pre-fabricated partition inserters• flexible: covers bottle sizes ranging from 0.25 litre up to 1 litre• formats ranging from a 6 pack case (2x3) up to a 24 pack-case (4x6)• efficient: fast and easy format changeoversYou’d like to get your hands onMeypack’s VP 531 pre-fabricatedpartition inserter?Whoever would like to see the VP531 WA with a pre-fabricated partitioninserter in action has the chanceto do so at the Nottuln facility.Packaging specialist Meypack ishappy to demonstrate the VP 531WA and provide interested partieswith helpful information on howthis solution can be efficiently utilisedand when necessary, integratedinto an existing infrastructure.Inquiries and appointments can bearranged by contacting Mr. KlausVogel by phone +49 2509-94-0, byfax +49 2509-94-8250 or by E-Mail:info@meypack.deTrade fairs 2004FACHPACKNuremberg, GermanySept. 29 th - October 1 st , 2004Hall H4, Stand 4-541PACK EXPO 2004Chicago, U.S.A.November 7 th - 11 th , 2004Hall N, Stand 5526BRAU BevialeNuremberg, GermanyNovember 10 th - 12 th , 2004Hall H7, Stand 7-443EMBALLAGE 2004Paris, FranceNovember 22 nd - 26 th , 2004Hall 5A, Stand D-075

Full-bodied successAn excellent wine is only as good as its ingredients – that much is clear. There are, for example, a large number of grape varieties world wide that must be carefully selected. The fruit content, spices and sweetness all contribute to an exceptional wine that one can enjoy and continuously re-discover. Corby Bottlers plc. in the United Kingdom hasapproached this with passion and professionalism. This company has been packing high quality wine from the most diverse wine growing areas for 17 years.Bottle infeed in lanesFolding sectionCarton flap foldingCorby Bottlers is not a productionfacility in the classical sense, butrather takes over the responsibilityof filling the delicious drops ofwine into glass bottles and bag-inboxesfor both large and smallwineries. Thereafter, the wine bottlesare packed in wrap-around casesand delivered to supermarketsthroughout Europe. Corby Bottlersis not only one of the most importantfilling and packing companiesfor wine but is also a notch abovewhen it comes to the subsequentlogistics. The company utilises animpressive warehouse with approximately10,000 pallet storage places, countless storage tanks and its ownresearch laboratory for analysisand quality control.“A feeling of trust” –Meypack’s VP 511 is well receivedWhen the packaging capacities becameinsufficient due to a noticeableincrease in the household consumptionof wine in Britain, CorbyBottlers Managing Director JohnSteel saw the need to consider anexpansion. The existing machinewas to be exchanged for a new, more powerful system. At thesame time, the new packagingsystem also had to be more flexibleand able to run all standard bottleformats.During the competition phase,Meypack was able to beat out threeother competitors by offering itshigh speed VP 511. Not only werethe technical details and the highspeed convincing (up to 50 casescan be packed per minute), but theimpressive maintenance and serviceconcept provided by the machinespecialist from the Münsterarea was also an additional pluspoint. Meypack’s UK representativePenn Packaging, located inBrantham near Manningtree Essex, successfully executed the project. The project ran smoothly and wasable to be completed on schedule.“I was impressed by the technicalquality and the features of the VP511 machine as well as by the engineerswho professionally carriedout the installation. They were theones who gave me a feeling of trustright from the start,” explainedJohn Steel satisfied. “Given thatthere is still reserve capacity available,we will be able to accommodatefurther increases in productionin the future,” added theManaging Director.Representative in the UKPenn Packaging Limited13 Court Farm, Stutton RoadBrantham · ManningtreeEssex CO11 1PWUKPhone +44-1473-327755Fax +44-1473-327756Contact person: Mike GoodwinE-Mail: mike@penn-packaging.comA second chance for the VP 411An Austrian dairy made a conscious decision not to buy a new packaging machine. - INTERNAL -kompackt: Mr Greve, do all of Meypack’slines of communication converge at yourdesk?Greve: One could say that, although thetrend is running more in the direction ofwireless communication. We deal withthe EDP, meaning Meypack’s hardware, software and telephone system, particularlythe aspects that connect us here atthe office. In today’s computer world, which is plagued by hackers and viruses,it isn’t always such an easy task.kompackt: You have just touched on thetopic of viruses. In recent months, viruses, worms and Trojans have become evenmore aggressive, hiding in the computersof unsuspecting users and wreaking havoc. How do you protect Meypack from suchvirtual infections?Greve: We utilise an extremely powerfulfirewall with a built-in virus filter. Thissystem identifies many thousands ofviruses and is even intelligent. We automaticallyscan every email, so that virusesdon’t make it through the “front door” ofthe company.Dörtelmann (adding): It does become aproblem when employees unsuspectinglybring viruses through the “back door” ona diskette or burned CDs. The virusesthen could infiltrate the network at breakneckspeed. However, our anti-virus softwarecan identify these immediately. Thesoftware continuously scans the network, ensuring that no virus epidemic canspread.kompackt: Ms Dörtelmann, you are responsiblefor the software at both theNottuln and Hamburg-Schnedfeld facilities. What do you do exactly?Dörtelmann: I develop and look after oursales software, which consists of databasesfor products, quotations and specificationsas well as a complete CRM-System(Customer Relationship Management). Both systems are run for the productionunits and sales departments in Nottulnand Hamburg. I answer questions fromthe users and implement new functionsthat arise during daily use.kompackt: So you’re sort of a “hotline”for the employees.Dörtelmann: Yes, in a manner of speaking.A positive side effect is that when speakingwith the users, I can easily see wherethere are kinks in the system and wherethings need to be optimised.PUBLISHERMeypackVerpackungssystemtechnik GmbHIndustriestraße 3D-48301 Nottuln-AppelhülsenPhone: +49-25 09-94 0Fax: +49-25 09-94 81 90info@meypack.de · www.meypack.comDo you speak Java? These days, no company can survive without a modern and efficient IT and telecommunications infrastructure. Including theintegrated telephone, fax and email system via wireless network connections, a complex server farm and the administrationof the company’s data files, it is hard to find a solution that hasn’t yet been implemented at Meypack. In this issue of thekompackt, the editorial staff profiles Meypack’s electronic data processing (EDP) team consisting of Rainer Greve, Ute Dörtelmannand Thomas Hauss, who are responsible for the IT needs of this packaging specialist.kompackt: Mr Hauss, your workstationlooks like a photo shop. Are you the “courtphotographer” for Meypack?Hauss (laughing): Well, the descriptionsounds a little strange, but yes, you areright. I ensure that all of the machine systemsbuilt at Meypack are documentedon video and in photos. If it is possible,I shoot a video clip of a machine in operation. We use this material not only to helpour sales department and our foreignrepresentatives but also for advertisingand presentations.kompackt: That sounds exciting, but whyis your desk located here in the EDPdepartment?Hauss: We don’t just photograph the machineunits but also concentrate on detailsand important technical features. Also, the products and packaging serve asexamples and must be photographed.I am sure you can imagine how many picturesand videos are generated to documentone machine and I am also responsiblefor archiving the photo data in anorganised manner.Greve (continuing): For this task, we havepurchased very effective software, whichworks on a web-based level. The serveris located (and protected) in cyber-spaceso that agencies, representatives andaccredited customers can access selectedpictures, logos and videos. These are allkompackt - the service magazine fromMeypack - is printed 3 x per year anddistributed free to customers andinterested parties.Ute Dörtelmann, Thomas Hauss and Rainer Grevecoded with keywords so that data canbe easily and quickly located, providingoptimal research possibilities.kompackt: That sounds rather complicated. But what occupies most of your timeduring a day?Greve: Well, in addition to the daily databackup and archiving tasks, we are keptbusy helping employees work with theStandard Office Software. There are oftenquestions related to picture formats, unreadabledocuments, printing problemsor difficulties related to email attachments. But that’s what makes the work interesting. You never know in the morning what therest of the day will bring. A system crash,a new virus or an ad-hoc creation of apresentation CD ROM with a video froma machine nearing completion – all ofthese can throw a wrench into one’s agendawithin seconds. From a strategic pointof view, we are mostly occupied withadapting the company’s IT to the constantlychanging demands of the user. That isachieved by either developing our ownsolutions or by purchasing them. Andevery addition not only needs to beevaluated but also integrated into theexisting IT landscape.kompackt: We’d like to wish you continuedenjoyment when meeting the technicalchallenges in the years to come. Thankyou for speaking with us today.kompacktTHE SERVICE-MAGAZINE FROM MEYPACKResponsible party: Peter BöckenholtEditing and layout:kompackt@meypack.deTotal number of copies: 4,500Over 30,000 visitors – a successful start, not only for the TOTAL PPMeypack’s VP 451 packaging machine ran non-stop at Meypack’sstand at this year’s TOTAL PP trade fair in Birmingham, UK. The machinewas continuously filled with various products in order to demonstrateto the visitors how efficient, powerful and flexible thesystem is.“Most of the customers and interested onlookers were impressed byhow accessible the system is, which is an extremely important featurewhen it comes to maintenance and upkeep. Additionally, the innovativequick changeover technology garnered much interest and was veryconvincing to the visitors,” according to Mike Goodwin from Meypack’sUK representative Penn Packaging Limited. “The concept to combinethe trade fairs worked well. We were able to reach a broader spectrumof visitors whom we would have otherwise only met at the different, individual fairs. That is not only efficient but also makes sense whenone considers the entire process of filling and packaging,” summedup Peter Böckenholt, Managing Director at Meypack. In addition topackaging machines, the packaging specialist Meypack also presentedproducts and technology from its bag closing division. The stand servedas a meeting point for re-kindling old contacts and forging new ones. From 4 into 1 – Unified to make a stronger and more global appearanceThe TOTAL PP in Birmingham, one of the largest and most importanttrade fairs for the international packaging industry, is a consolidationof the Pakex, PPMA, Eurochem and Interphex trade fairs. By combiningthese four UK fairs, more guests were reached, especially from an internationalaudience. The TOTAL PP, which opened its doors for the firsttime in 2004, was able to bring nearly all areas of packaging materialsand the packaging industry under one roof. Over 30,000 visitors passedthrough the turnstiles between March 29th and April 1st, 2004, 68% ofthose coming from the food and beverage industries. And that is a solid foundation for the next TOTAL PP in 2007.- MEYPACK RETROFIT SERVICE -The VP 451 at Meypack’s stand at the TOTAL PP in BirminghamMulti-pallet turning stationSpecialisation is standard fare atMeypack RetrofitThe classic Euro pallet is spreadingits wings – something that the RetrofitTeam at Meypack could seecoming for a long time. “When itcomes to palletising technology, the Euro pallet has become the prevailingstandard over the last 10to 15 years. However, its role hasevolved significantly, due in nosmall part to the large gas/petrolstations and discounters with theirwide-ranging array of products.Previously relegated to backroomstorage areas, pallets are now occupyingcentre stage as these companies increasingly display their productsin the shop area directly on the pallets,” explained Dieter Hövelmeyer,Team Manager at Meypack’s Retrofit. Marketing departments wishedfor a technical solution to satisfy their product presentation wishes andthey got it – as seen today in the wide-ranging pallet sizes and formats.Ranging from 1/4 or 1/2 pallet formats up to completely individualformats for the export, modern pallets most show the utmost flexibilityin order to palletise the products to meet each customer’s individualneeds. The Retrofit division at Meypack specialises in diverse re-building,modifications and new construction in the area of pallet transport.Meypack has been analysing the aforementioned trend for over 5 yearsand taking on the modernisation and changeover of the widely distributedMeypack palletising systems. “Through our service and modernisationconcepts, the machines can be adapted to meet the demands ofthe current market. That is efficient and increases the market potentialsignificantly. And all of that without a new high-cost investment,”concluded Dieter Hövelmeyer.
