Sister Alison Bush was <strong>in</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>Hall</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fame</strong>for her commitment over the last 40 years to improv<strong>in</strong>g the healthoutcomes <strong>of</strong> Aborig<strong>in</strong>al mothers and babies across Australia.Vicki Wade, SSWAHS <strong>Area</strong> Director Aborig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>Health</strong> Unit said the awardrecognised Sister Bush’s expert <strong>in</strong>put <strong>in</strong>to policy and service delivery at alocal, state and national level.“Sister Alison Bush has played an important role <strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up a nationalmaternity health tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program for Aborig<strong>in</strong>al and Torres Strait Islanderhealth workers <strong>in</strong> partnership with The Royal Australian College <strong>of</strong>Obstetrics & Gynaecology and the James Cooke University Townsville.“She has also shared her experience and knowledge at a local level formany years <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the development <strong>of</strong> the SSWAHS Maternity <strong>Service</strong>sPlan.“Sister Bush has encouraged many mothers to come to <strong>RPA</strong> Hospital formaternal care and has delivered more than 1,000 babies from all acrossNSW dur<strong>in</strong>g her career,” Ms Wade said.“Her role as a cultural broker is key <strong>in</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g Aborig<strong>in</strong>al women andbabies are cared for <strong>in</strong> a culturally respectful, safe and secure way,” shesaid.Valerie Smith, SSWAHS Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Manager Women’s <strong>Health</strong> andNeonatology said she was honoured to be present at Sister Bush’ <strong>in</strong>duction.“We are so proud <strong>of</strong> Sister Bush’s achievements,” Ms Smith said.“The cl<strong>in</strong>ical and cultural expertise that Alison provides is really important toAborig<strong>in</strong>al mothers and their families. These women <strong>of</strong>ten f<strong>in</strong>d the hospitalenvironment threaten<strong>in</strong>g and difficult to navigate.
