They filed this report. MEEKER I What does FCCLA stand for? Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. STAR events STAR Events stand for Students Taking Action with Recognition. �� Pictured: Peggy Joy and Cliff Chapin DDS Aspen Leaf Dental Cliff Chapin DDS With a B.S. degree from the University of Nevada Reno and DDS degree from the University of Pacific, in 1981 Cliff started practicing in Craig, Colorado, then set up a satellite location to Meeker in 1983. After purchasing the Meeker practice in 1984, Aspen Leaf Dental was in business as a general / family dentistry practice, emphasizing preventive care. The Chapin family, consisting of Cliff, Jan, Sage and Cheyenne are an asset to the community. Cliff explains about his choice for moving to Meeker, “I chose to settle in Meeker because of the friendly small town atmosphere and outstanding outdoor recreational resources.” He adds, “I cannot thank the community enough for the patronage it has given me for the 26 years of practice.” �� Water Slide Obstacle Course Jousting Arena STAR Events are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. STAR Events offer individual skill development and application of learning There are three levels of recognition that you can receive: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The recognition is based on a point system. Our STAR event: Entrepreneurship Event that recognizes participants who develop a plan for a small business using family and consumer sciences skills and sound business practices. The business must relate to an area of family and consumer sciences education or related occupations. We made a full and detailed business plan for event coordination and party rental RIO BLANCO HERALD TIMES Thursday, July 30, 2009 MHS’s Chapin, McLaughlin win national competition �� services. State competition We presented to a panel of judges who scored our project and presentation on a rubric. We were ranked in the Gold Level and had the highest score, which earned us the privilege of going to the National Competition in Nashville, Tenn. Nationals Nationals were held in Nashville, Tenn. We presented to another panel of judges who scored our project and presentation on another rubric. We had the highest scores out of all the participants and won a scholarship to Kendall College in Chicago. We were also ranked in the Gold Level. There were 30-40 participating teams in the entrepreneurship event. RIO BLANCO HERALD TIMES Thursday, July 30, 2009 OBITUARIES Bob Long Aug. 31, 1922~July 15, 2009 Meeker resident Bob Long, 86, passed away July 15, 2009, at Pioneers Hospital following a fourmonth battle with lung cancer. Robert LeRoy Long was born Aug. 31, 1922, in Stratton, Colo., the youngest child of Ray and Rowena (Cline) Long. He spent his early childhood on the eastern slope of Colorado with his family, then moved to Fruita, Colo., in 1934. He attended high school at Champion, a Seventh Day Adventist boarding school in Loveland. Following his schooling, he went to work for his father on the family farm in Montrose. He met his future bride Lillie Mae Clements in Montrose where they were united in marriage on March 13, 1944. To this union two children were born. Bob worked as a mechanic for Texaco, Inc., retiring in 1987. He began his career in Newcastle, Wyo., and in 1952 moved to the Wilson Creek field where the family lived until moving into Meeker in the early 1970s. In 1984 the couple purchased a home in Powell Park, where Bob was quite content taking care of his horses, helping with the garden and raising a few cows. He enjoyed fishing, square dancing and was a league Longtime Meeker resident Bonnie J. French, 70, died July 14, 2009, at the Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. Bonnie was born Sept. 22, 1938, in Meeker, the daughter of Leasil and Josephine (Thompson) French. Bonnie worked as a waitress for many years and was a clerk at Watt’s Ranch Market as well. Bonnie was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed collecting dolls, fishing, camping and arrowhead hunting. Survivors include her son, Mike Rippy and his wife Brenda of Rock Springs, Wyo.; her mother, Josephine French of Meeker; five grandchildren, Ramanda Bradley, Gordon Bradley, Joe Rippy and his wife Misty, Ryan Parker and his wife Laci, and Judith D. Coates Beard, 68, of Dinosaur passed away July 27, 2009, at Pioneers Medical Center in Meeker. Judith was born July 5, 1941, in Scottsville, N.Y., to James M. and Lois Elizabeth (Ely) Coates. She was married to her husband Minford Beard for 40 years. Since 1970, the Beards were the ranch managers for Three Springs Ranch in Dinosaur. Judith was preceded in death by Bonnie French Sept 22, 1938~July 14, 2009 Judith Beard July 5, 1941~July 27, 2009 bowler for many years. He was a devoted family man with a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye. In addition to his loving and dedicated wife of Bob Long 65 years, Lill, Bob is survived by his two children, Roberta Watt of Meeker and Bruce Long and his wife Christie of Dinosaur; one sister, Agnes Struthers of Ferndale, Wash.; six grandchildren Melanie (Wayne) Wilhelm; J.C. (Alicia) Watt; Elisha (T.J.) Kidd, Lynette Marie Long, Brandie Lee Long and Robert Eaton as well as 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, his stepmother Maude Long and a stepbrother, Gale George, preceded him in death. A graveside service was held Monday, July 20 at Highland Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Hollenbeck officiating. Friends may make memorial contributions to Cancer Research through Cochran Memorial Chapel, which was entrusted with the arrangements. Christopher Parker; 10 greatgrandchildren; and four sisters, Shirley Randall, Betty Pritchard, Margaret Davis and Patsy Story and her husband Bonnie French Larry. Bonnie is preceded in death by her daughter, Debbie Seebaum; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Rippy; her father, Leasil; a brother, Leasil Duane; a sister, Sharlene; and her former husband Larry Rippy. Funeral services were held Monday, July 20 from Cochran Memorial Chapel with Bishop Brady Ross officiating. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery in Meeker. her parents. She is survived by her husband Minford Beard, daughter Colleen Pace, brother Tom (Sharon) Coates, brother Howard “Biff” Coates, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. A date for memorial services had not been set as of presstime. The reception was held at Lake Lucille Inn. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Yurkovic of Chicago. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Arnold of Meeker. Josie is a flight attendant and Jeff is a captain for Era Airlines. They make their home in Anchorage, Alaska.
