Jim Ruckman, right, installed a new window last month outside of
the choir loft at Holy Family Catholic Church in Meeker, replacing the
original one. The church was built in 1912.
Local man builds new
window for church
By JEFF BURKHEAD
MEEKER I Jim Ruckman isn’t
Catholic. And he’d never made a
church window before.
But that didn’t stop him from taking
on the job.
Ruckman, 72, has been in the construction
business his entire working
life. That experience came in handy
when he agreed to make a new window
for the front of the Holy Family
Catholic Church, 889 Park Ave.
“I was working with Mike Whalin
at the time, and they asked him to do
it. He said he couldn’t, but I might. So
I went and looked at it. I thought,
‘Yeah, I will do this, just to see if I
can.’ So I took it on.”
While Ruckman did the woodwork,
Sandra Wambolt of Meeker did
the stained-glass work for the window,
which is on the outside of the church’s
choir loft, facing the street.
“We’re very pleased with it,” said
Bill Ertmer, a deacon at the church,
adding funding for the window project
came from a grant from the Fairfield
Trust and donations.
Wambolt has done other stainedglass
work for the church.
“I did the other free-standing windows
on the inside (of the church), and
there’s a little window in the entryway
that I did in memory of my mother, so
Bill asked me if I would do this one,”
Wambolt said. “It was a challenge.”
Ruckman saw the window as an
opportunity to try something new.
“I’ve never gone to the church. I
don’t belong to the church. I just did it
because it was a challenge,” he said.
Ruckman began work on the win-
RANGELY I It may be a new
group, but organizers of the Trinity
Project are dealing with an old problem:
drugs.
“We’re looking at a grassroots
effort to take back our community,”
said Town Manager Peter Brixius.
“We’re not trying to paint the picture
that it’s pervasive, but it is out there,
and we can’t allow it to grow.”
The Trinity Project takes a threefold
approach to combat the drug
problem: law enforcement, education
and recovery.
The group, started earlier this year,
had sparse attendance at its initial
meeting. The group met again last
week, and based on the numbers,
interest is growing.
“It was excellent,” Brixius said.
“It was much better in terms of attendance
and content.”
Nearly 30 people attended last
week’s meeting, which included comments
by Rangely Police Chief Vince
Wilczek, Rio Blanco County
Undersheriff Mike Joos and Sgt. Roy
Kinney, RBC Sheriff’s investigator,
who lives in Rangely.
“The meeting went well and was a
lot better attended than I expected,”
Joos said. “There was good participation.”
That’s one of the aims of the
Trinity Project — to get local people
involved.
“That’s what the police need, they
member of the Rangely Town Council
and one of the organizers of the Trinity
Project. “It’s just about being neighborly.”
The Trinity Project doesn’t
encourage people to take the law into
their hands.
“What we’re aiming at right now
is trying to put together a program
along the lines of Neighborhood
Watch, so communities can help
themselves. It’s not a vigilante effort.
It’s a passive approach to help control
this activity in their neighborhoods,”
Brixius said. “It will take the whole
community to make this work. We had
some really positive feedback from
Highway 13 construction to begin Aug. 3
RBC I The next phase of road construction on Highway 13 will
start Aug. 3 with surveying. Actual construction will start on Aug. 10.
A complete reconstruction of the roadway will take place
between Mile Marker 30.1 and the rest area at Mile Marker 27.
New fencing construction will take place an additional mile and a
half to Mile Marker 25.5
The speed limit in the construction zone will be reduced to 35
mph when workers are present and 50 mph when they are not,
seven days a week. Since the last phase of construction, speeding
fines have gone up.
The fines for construction zones are doubled and range from
$344 to $677, depending on how fast above the limit a driver is
going.
Construction will go until Nov. 1, at which time it will shut down
for the winter and resume in late spring 2010.
MEEKER I The board of
trustees agreed to sponsor the
Smoking River Pow Wow this year at
the “gold” level of $1,000. The powwow
committee had requested a
$2,000 donation at the last meeting.
“I would like to see $2,000
because that’s what the other two
tribes have done and that makes a
statement,” said committee member
Lynn Lockwood.
The board also scheduled an Aug.
4 public hearing to discuss the powwow
committee’s request to install
permanent underground electricity at
Ute Park.
Dr. Bob Dorsett appeared before
the board to discuss the consideration
of a resolution urging Congress to preserve
the exemption for hydraulic
fracturing in the Safe Drinking Water
Act. Concerns have been raised that
the Safe Drinking Water Act would
hinder energy developers from using
hydraulic fracturing — a process
which uses pressurized water to fracture
underground rock layers in order
to release trapped deposits of natural
gas.
“From what I understand,
hydraulic fracturing has been safe out
in the Piceance Basin, but we don’t
know for sure because the aquifers
haven’t been monitored since the 80s.
USGS is reopening their monitoring
well out in the Piceance,” Dorsett said.
“The only question that seems of
immediate concern to the town is
whether or not there’s potential for
coal bed methane production here in
the valley and particularly up around
the well field. I think it would behoove
dow about three years ago. The window
was installed earlier this summer.
“It took about 400 hours to complete,”
he said.
Asked how much the window
cost, Ruckman said, “(The church)
wanted to know how much it will cost.
I said, ‘You put the cost on it. I’m
going to build the window whether
you want it or not.’”
Money wasn’t the reason
Ruckman wanted to build the window.
“It didn’t wind up very much
(pay) per hour,” he said. “It was a
challenge, and I like a challenge.”
Not that it was an easy job.
“I don’t think I even swore at it,
but I was frustrated a few times,”
Ruckman said. “It was a big challenge
how to make it better than the old one.
The old one ... the people who built
the original, they didn’t have the tools
I have now. But they were pretty good
craftsmen. They made that out of sixby-sixes.”
Due to its age, the original window
was in bad shape.
“We saved it when we took it out.
We put a strap and cinched it up tight,
so it wouldn’t fall apart,” Ruckman
said. “It was in terrible shape. It was
just all withered.”
Installing the new window was a
difficult process.
“It’s not quite complete yet,”
Ruckman said. “I haven’t put the plaster
around the inside yet. The original
window ... it was kind of smashed
down because the building settled
down on it. The hole is egg shaped. I
had to cut over an inch out of the top
and the bottom (of the hole) to make
the new window fit.”
Ruckman could appreciate the history
of the church building - constructed
in 1912. His family has a long
history in Meeker, too.
“My family has been here since
1885,” Ruckman said. “My granddad’s
family went through this area on
their way from Missouri to California.
When they got to California, my
granddad got on his horse and came
back to Meeker by himself, and he
was 12 years old. He liked it here better
than in California.”
While he’s still putting the finishing
touches on the new window, he’s
happy with the final results.
“It’s prettier on the inside than it is
on the outside,” he said.
And Ruckman is a hard customer
to please.
“I never do something quite as
perfect as I would like it to be,” he
said. “But it didn’t turn out too bad.”
LEERS TO THE EDITOR
Meeker grads say
thanks for help in
winning scholarship
Dear Editor,
“A scholarship from Kendall
College in Chicago, Ill., will be presented
to the team with the highest
score in the competition. Please welcome
Sage Chapin and Elissa
McLaughlin on stage to accept this
honor.”
We stood there wide-eyed and
shocked when our names were spoken
into the microphone. Someone
had to nudge us toward the stage
before we realized we had won the
National Entrepreneurship FCCLA
competition in Nashville, Tenn. It
wasn’t until later that we understood
why we won.
We poured our hearts and souls
into the project and we had gained so
much support and help from the community.
There are so many people we
would like to thank.
First of all, we would like to
thank the staff at Meeker High
School. Mrs. Carly Thompson and
Mrs. Etchart, thank you for providing
us with all the necessary steps needed
to go to the national competition.
Mrs. Kelley, we never would have
made it if you hadn’t checked our
entire project for grammatical and
spelling errors. Mrs. DeVore-
Wedding and Mrs. Washburn, your
continual support and thoughtfulness
was carried with us through this
entire experience.
Our next big thank you goes out
to Megan and Becky Ridings. You
both are so special to us and you
were in our hearts as we went on
stage to receive our award.
Also, we would like to show gratitude
towards The Bistro on Park
Avenue. Your time and effort helped
us earn a lot of the money that sent
us to Nashville. Furthermore, we are
so grateful for the money that the
Meeker School Board, the Meeker
THG-09909
Chamber of Commerce, the Cooley
Zagar-Brown law firm and Bellco
Credit Union donated to help us pay
for our trip.
Of course, this experience would
not be possible without the understanding
and love from our parents.
We want to let you know that we
love you and are thankful for you.
Overall, we would like to say
thank you to everyone who donated
money and spent time helping us
improve our project. Without the support
of our community we would
have never made it as far as we did.
Thank you.
Emergency response
team appreciated
Dear Editor,
What a wonderful emergency
response team Rangely has!
Thank you Josh for turning
around to help us when we had a car
accident on the 20th. You got the ball
rolling by calling our accident in,
then staying to help.
A huge thank you to the ambulance
crews who took such care with
us. In a small town it is has to be
hard to care so professionally when
you know so many of the people you
are responding to help. Thank You!
Thanks to the fire department for
all the help in getting us out of the
car.
The emergency room staff was
caring, reassuring and handled us
with great care, thank you.
To family and friends, thank you
for the phone calls, cards, food
brought in and stopping by to see
how we were doing. Where would
we be without all of you?
Thank you to the officers who
stopped by to see how we were
doing. I’m sure in a larger town that
would not have happened.
Anti-conservative
bias seen by writer
Dear Editor,
I don’t understand what’s so hard
about trying to get a letter to the editor
concerning pro-life remarks, especially
when there was a woman
standing up for the rights of all
women a.k.a. right to abortion. I submitted
my letter twice, and even
made a phone call concerning why it
was not published. Well, we all know
the political bias that goes on in this
country against conservative values. I
would have never suspected said bias
would be involved in a small-town
paper. Get real. I’m really thinking
about never paying two quarters for
another paper. Have a great day.
RIO BLANCO HERALD TIMES
Thursday, July 30, 2009
W hoever
says there’s nothing
to do in a small town, isn’t
paying attention.
There are plenty of activities
going on, if you want to get involved.
For a rural county, Rio Blanco’s
two towns have some pretty major
events, including Meeker’s sheepdog
trials, Range Call, powwow and Fall
Festival, while Rangely offers rock
crawling, Septemberfest, Holidayfest,
Crab Crack and the college’s annual
foundation banquet and auction.
Of course, then there’s the Rio
Blanco County 4-H Fair.
I’m a city boy, but I love the fair.
Last year was my first experience
with the fair, and I really enjoyed it. I
tried Rocky Mountain oysters for the
first time. They’re tasty, especially
with a little cocktail sauce. I received
tips on pig showmanship from Gerald
and Todd Morris, who know a thing
or two about showing animals. I saw
mutton riding for the first time; I had
never heard of such a thing. I stepped
in manure while taking photos, all in
the line of duty. And there was lots of
good food. What’s not to like?
One of the best things about the
fair is it involves families and businesses
from the towns on both ends
of the county.
The fairgrounds may be located
in Meeker, but I saw lots of people
from Rangely at last year’s fair, either
as participants or spectators. And the
fair board is made up of representatives
from both ends of the county.
A ton of work goes into putting
on the fair, and the county 4-H
Extension staff is to be commended
for their dedication, not to mention
all of the parents and volunteers who
put in countless hours.
Most of all, the fair is about the
kids.
This year, the Herald Times,
along with Rio Blanco County
Extension, is proud to recognize the
fair with a pullout section in today’s
paper. Another special edition will be
published after the fair is over, with a
complete list of results and lots of
photos. Thanks to Extension and all
of the business sponsors, whose support
helped to make these special editions
possible.
Along with a schedule of events,
the special edition in today’s paper
profiles the five senior 4-H’ers in the
county — Makaila Etchart, Hillary
Hayes, Clinton “Weeg” Kilduff, Meg
Nieslanik and Megan Ridings.
There’s also a feature story about
Morgan Neilson, the state’s new 4-H
president.
We hear a lot about the societal
problems with today’s youth — drugs
and gangs, as well as the all-aboutme
attitudes attributed to the younger
generation, like lack of respect, lack
of a work ethic, etc. But after spending
time with these Rio Blanco
County 4-H’ers, it’s renewed my
faith in young people. They are a
product of their upbringing, and it
says a lot about family, community
and programs like 4-H and FFA.
So, enjoy the fair, and celebrate
everything that’s good about living
and working in Rio Blanco County.
Just be careful where you step.
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
Here I am talking up the fair, and
I missed the first event — last week’s
fashion revue.
I’m still kicking myself over that
one.
I fully intended to cover the
event, as I did last year. On Monday,
Dessa Watson had told me about the
fashion revue and other upcoming
fair events, like last Saturday’s shooting
competition, and I even mentioned
them in my column in last
week’s paper.
And I still forgot.
I even walked right past the fairgrounds
building, where the fashion
revue was being held, on my way to
the Meeker Recreation Center to
watch the documentary film about
the Ute Indians’ return to the White
River Valley.
And it still didn’t dawn on me.
Walking home after the movie,
Dessa drove by and asked if I wanted
a ride, yet it didn’t occur to me that
she would have been coming from
the event.
Then later that night, sitting on
my front porch, it finally hit me — I
had missed the fashion revue.
My first thought was, please,
God, let the fashion revue be next
Thursday. Of course, that was wishful
thinking. My second thought was, is
it possible to bring everybody back
together and have the event again?
You know, sort of a do-over. Dessa,
who I’m sure was thinking I was
crazy by now, politely said that
would not be possible.
Typically, I’m good about writing
things down, so I can keep track of
my schedule. It has been crazy busy
lately, even more crazy than normal,
but still, that’s no excuse for forgetting
to cover an event.
So, the only thing I can attribute
it to is, well, old age. I knew those
senior moments would come in
handy. Sort of like a mulligan in golf,
right?
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
Thanks to Jack Mohnhaupt and
Shawn Luce for helping me out with
photos from the fashion revue. You
saved my you-know-what.
boost to the Rangely economy.
“We’d be dead in the water without
them here, with the tourist traffic
this year it’s been slim pickin’s,” said
Henry Hames, owner of Buck ‘N’
Bull RV Park and Campground and a
member of the Rangely Lodging Tax
Board.
But locals are wondering what
will happen when the pipeline project
is over and workers move on.
“I think it’s going to be very
quiet,” Hames said. “I think we’ll go
slow into the winter and be dead until
spring.”
The pipeline project was expected
to be completed in the fall. But word
is the project is running ahead of
schedule.
“They were originally hoping to
be out of here by September, because
they have a line starting in Fresno
(Calif.) as soon as they finish this
one,” Hames said. “What I’m hearing
now is (the project) is two or three
weeks ahead of schedule. So some of
them may be leaving as early as the
second or third week of August.”
Workers from Snelson
Companies, the pipeline construction
company, have filled most of the
spots at local RV parks. But some
businesses have benefitted more than
others from the pipeline project.
“Some of the businesses have
said they haven’t got much out of it,”
Hames said. “But they’ve taken all of
our full-hookup spaces, and even all
of our 12 tent spaces have been taken
up. For awhile there, we had everything
filled.”
With hunting season right around
the corner, local businesses traditionally
count on that being another boost
to the economy.
“We haven’t gotten that many
reservations for hunting season,”
Hames said. “I don’t know if they’re
just waiting to the last minute. But
we’ve had very few reservations
compared to what we normally have.
I’m not even getting inquiries about
what’s available. Even if we don’t get
the reservations, we usually get people
calling to find out what’s available,
but I haven’t even been getting
those calls.”
Asked if he attributed the lack of
calls to the economy, Hames said,
“I’m not sure. I was up in Wyoming
last week and I couldn’t even get a
place (to park his RV). I stayed one
night in an open field, because that
was all that was available. From what
I’ve seen in Wyoming, they’re going
crazy, up and down that western corridor.”
Here’s hoping some of that
“craziness” spreads to Northwest
Colorado.
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
On a more positive note,
Enterprise is initiating an environmental
assessment for a proposed
Meeker Gas Plant expansion. A public
meeting was held July 16 to talk
about the expansion process.
“I can not speak to particulars as
yet; they have just talked to us in
concept at this point,” said Jeff
Madison, Rio Blanco County planning
director and natural resources
specialist. “They are planning to
build three more plants at the same
site, what they call trains, to add to
the two that are there. They have
spent three years and approximately
$950 million on the first two. I suspect
they have learned some things
about building in Colorado, so they
should be able to trim time and cost
on these some. They also will have
some shared facilities, which should
trim costs some. They peaked out at
about 650 workers on the first two
phases.
“If I had to guess, and that is all it
would be at this point, I would say
two to three years and $ 1.2 billion
(for the proposed expansion),”
Madison added. “Seems like a pretty
big deal to me. Not bad for a county
that is supposedly running away business.”
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
The economy is having an impact
on local hiring practices.
“The last couple of years, we’ve
had budgeted positions for the county,
but were were unable to fill the
positions due to the high competition
for labor,” said County Administrator
Pat Hooker. “Now, with the economy
being down a bit and more people
looking for work, we’ve been able to
fill some of those long-standing open
positions. Currently, we’re close to
being fully staffed within the county
for the first time in quite awhile.”
However, county officials will
pay close attention to the economy
before committing to any new hires.
“Any hiring needs over the next
several months will have to be
reviewed and approved by the commissioners,”
Hooker said. “We’ll be
watching the workload, county/business
activity, etc., closely to make
sure the employment need is long
term, before we commit to additional
hiring.”
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
I had someone tell me last week
she had heard a human skelton was
found tied to a pole with barbed wire
in the Piceance Basin.
That was news to me. So I decided
to check with Rio Blanco County
Undersheriff Mike Joos.
“Back in the first part of June, a
call was received of a skeleton tied to
a tree in Piceance Creek,” Joos said.
“Deputies responded to the call and
upon arrival they did find a skeleton;
however, it was hanging in a tree, not
tied to it. The skeleton was that of an
elk. End of story.”
I guess that’s how rumors get
started.
■ Dr. J.D.
Watson
We are examining seven characteristics
by which we can know whether or not
our faith is strong. We have considered
three thus far.
Fourth, the more able we are to lose,
suffer, and do without, the stronger our
faith is. There is perhaps no move vivid
illustration of this than Philippians 3:8. We note verse 10
first, one of the most beautiful verses in the New Testament.
Paul ruminates, “That I may know him, and the
power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings,
being made conformable unto his death.” Paul’s
greatest desire was to know Christ. The driving force of
his life was to be more deeply and intimately acquainted
with His Lord and Master. He didn’t just want to know
things about the Lord, rather to know the Lord Himself.
But how much did he want such knowledge? How
strong was that desire? Verse 8 answers: “I count all things
but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ
Jesus my Lord: Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of
all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win
Christ.” The word “dung” is skubalon. Sadly, every modern
translation misses the depth of this word by rendering
it “refuse” (ASV), “rubbish” (NASB, ESV, NIV, NKJV),
“garbage” (NLT), or even “trash” (NCV). But skubalon
goes even further than those somewhat milder images. It’s
an extremely course, ugly, and repulsive word that also referred
to excrement, and the KJV (and the Geneva Bible of
the Puritans) correctly captures that image. Paul considered
everything in this world as nothing more than the
most repulsive thing he could think of in comparison to
knowing the Lord Jesus Christ.
That challenges each of us to ask ourselves, “Do I really
love the Lord? Do I really desire to know Him personally,
not just for salvation, but for intimacy?” The only
way we can do this, of course, is through His Word. We
will not find our Lord in some “mystical experience” or
some emotional outburst; rather we find Him only in His
Word. Jesus Himself said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments”
(Jn. 14:15) and, “He that hath my commandments,
and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me” (v. 21).
That is why David wrote, “Ohow love I thy law! it is my
meditation all the day” (Ps. 119:97), and why the Apostle
the problem when they did a heart
catheterization.
“We were just shocked, because
we didn’t know anything was wrong
with her,” Ruby said. “She’s like the
Energizer bunny, all day long running
around. But the doctors told me she
was lucky to be alive.”
A benefit yard sale will be held
Saturday at 815 Main St. in Meeker,
with the money going toward
Hailee’s medical expenses.
Nathan Smith, who works with
Hailee’s dad, Chris, at Berry Bros.,
came up with the yard sale idea.
“I’ve been friends with Chris and
Ruby since they moved out here,”
Nathan said. “All of proceeds will go
to help them out.”
Barone Middle School parents
will be glad to hear the Meeker
School Board has approved the
repaving of Bob Tucker Drive, which
is the road leading to the middle
school.
“The road has sorely needed a
retrofit for some time,” said Mary
Strang, school board president. “And
thanks to some of the buyout savings
on materials (for the school bond
construction projects), we were able
to include it in our project.”
Rotor milling of the old asphalt
will begin Aug 10, with the repaving
to begin a week later.
“The community will be mighty
happy to know that this will be done
before school starts,” Strang said.
“It’s gotten so bad that it’s been suggested
we needed to put up a sign
that says, ‘four-wheel drive only.’”
Or, turn it into a rock crawling
park.
RECYCLE THIS NEWSPAPER
John could write, “Whoso keepeth his word, in him verily
is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are
in him” (1 Jn. 2:5).
Such love, therefore, proves our faith in Him. If we
love Him as Paul did, we are totally trusting in Him, leaning
only on Him, valuing only Him. And with that kind of
love, we don’t care what else we might lose or suffer.
Fifth, the more easily we can repel inward impulses
and resist temptations, the stronger our faith is. Aweak
faith stumbles and falls in the most basic temptations, but
a strong faith is unwavering in even the strongest trials.
We’re reminded here of David, who even as faithful as
he was failed in the one of the most basic temptations and
committed adultery and even murder. In contrast, we think
of Abraham, who when faced with one of the strongest
temptations any person could face, was willing to obey
God and kill his only son.
What can give that kind of faith and obedience? Puritan
Thomas Brooks puts it wonderfully: “I would counsel
every Christian to answer all temptations with this short
saying, ‘The Lord is my portion.’ . . . O, sir, if Satan should
come to thee with [a piece of fruit], as once he did to Eve,
tell him that ‘the Lord is your portion’; or with a grape, as
once he did to Noah, tell him that ‘the Lord is your portion’;
or with a change of raiment, as once he did to Gehazi,
tell him that ‘the Lord is your portion’; or with a
wedge of gold, as once he did to Achan, tell him that ‘the
Lord is your portion’; or with a bag of money, as once he
did to Judas, tell him that ‘the Lord is your portion’; or
with a crown, a kingdom, as once he did to Moses, tell him
that ‘the Lord is your portion.’ Indeed, from the simplest
temptation to the most advanced onslaught, our answer can
always be, ‘The Lord is my portion.’”
Puritan John Bunyan offers us an encouraging principle:
“Temptations, when we meet them at first, are as the
lion that reared upon Samson; but if we overcome them,
the next time we see them we shall find a nest of honey
within them.” Yes, temptations will get easier to defeat as
we continue in our Christian walk. One day we’ll be able
to look back and think, “How could I have even been
tempted in that thing? It was so basic that it shouldn’t have
given me a second thought.” What seemed once to be a
lion is now nothing but a dead carcass.

Loose Ends: Rounding up strays
Afew yee-haws would have
come in handy. Following the
herd—critter or human—no
matter how small, has never been a
habit of mine. So when I walked out
of church on Sunday and faced a
local family’s 4-H project on the
loose, I almost turned tail myself.
While the family appeared to be
gone, the metal gate on the animal’s
pen was ajar, and the cattle trio
skedaddled across the street to graze
on the neighbor’s lush green grass.
Never tempted to sign up for the
dude-for-the-day vacation trips, I
was a little hesitant to round up the
strays. Yet, I felt compelled to try
and move them back across the
street, as I watched the biggest one
attempt to push down the pesky
pickets of the neat white fence.
Soon another erstwhile wannabe
cow herder appeared. The two of us
got on either side of the trio, thinking
that they would go back to the
safety of their pen easily. It
appeared to be a correct assumption,
as this encouraged them to increase
their pace and trot back across the
street toward their pen.
A few yards away from the gate
however, the leader of the bovine
bandits bolted. While the other two
kept trotting toward the open gate,
to giving the glass a sloppy onceover
with his big pink tongue, when
he was surprised to find to find two
women in their Sunday clothes closing
in.
Jerking his head up and putting
his bulky body into reverse, he
backed up a few yards, then stopped
to survey the situation. Dolefully
chewing on some clumps of grass,
he watched as the two of us corralled
his companions. He inched
his way forward, veering to the left
a bit so he could reach the bales of
that neither one of us fancied ourselves
as true women of the west, as
he simply wasn’t budging.
PUBLIC NOTICE
Searching around for something
with which to urge him forward, we
each picked up the handiest tool
possible. My friend flicked his
flanks with a red switch and I
waved a leaf rake behind his backside.
He humored us by moving
toward the direction of the gate, but
would stand stock still every few
minutes to let us know who was in
charge of this impromptu cattle
drive. There is no doubt we would
have lost the cowgirl-of-the-day
award if there had been one.
I considered moseying down the
trail without driving the stubborn
steer back into his pen. The thought
of the girl’s disappointment at fair
time banished those thoughts, so I
decided to let him have his freedom
a little bit longer. No sooner had I
given up control of his progress, he
trotted back into his pen where the
other two were waiting.
As I walked away, I heard a
voice calling, “Tinkerbell.
Tinkerbell. Get away from there.”
Looking up to see if Wendy or Peter
Pan had appeared, I saw a man
heading toward the fenced corral to
fetch his dog. These stray days of
summer could be made into a great
western version of the old tale.
Hunter education class Aug. 21-23
❙ By Colorado statute, anyone born on or after Jan. 1,
1949, who applies for a Colorado hunting license or preference point
must have successfully completed an approved hunter education
course.
An approved DOW hunter education course, instructed by Jon
Wangnild, and hosted by ERBM Recreation and Park District, will be
held Aug. 21, 22 and 23. Any individual who plans on spending time
outdoors, whether they intend to hunt or not, can benefit by receiving
the training.
The most basic purpose of a hunter education course is to teach
safe, responsible firearm handling in the field, in the vehicle, and in
the home after hunting. Through lectures, hands-on activities, and
videos, students learn about firearms and ammunition, firearm safety,
shooting fundamentals and firearm and wildlife laws.
While hunter education courses enable safer hunting, they also
help hunters be more successful in their hunts, and emphasize ethical
hunting behavior. Subjects covered include hunter responsibility,
wildlife identification and management, game care and outdoor survival.
Students also receive introductions to hunting with bows and
black-powder firearms.
To receive a hunter education card, enrollees must attend all sessions,
pass a final written exam and “live fire” exercise. Fee for the
class is $10. Further details regarding time, location and age restrictions
can be found in the August-December 2009 Activities brochure,
by calling 878-3403, or visiting the Web site at www.meekerrecdistrict.com.

MEEKER I Colorado Division
of Wildlife District Wildlife Manager
Mike Swaro has been named a 2009
recipient of the Torch Award by the
North American Wildlife
Enforcement Officers Association
(NAWEOA).
Swaro, whose first assignment
was in Meeker, was presented the
award July 22 at the NAWEOA annual
conference in New Brunswick,
Canada.
“Mike’s a dedicated wildlife officer,”
said Area Wildlife Manager Bill
de Vergie of Meeker, who supervises
Swaro. “This is a big honor and we’re
thrilled that Mike was selected to
receive this award.”
The NAWEOA Torch Award is
presented annually to one officer from
each of the NAWEOA regions.
Colorado Division of Wildlife is one
of 13 agencies in the Western US
Region.
The officer must be in their first
five years in wildlife enforcement.
Swaro fulfilled his dream of
becoming a wildlife officer when was
commissioned by the Division of
Wildlife in 2006 and assigned to the
Meeker West district in the Piceance
Basin.
While serving in the Piceance
Basin, Swaro became quickly familiar
with the expansive energy development
that is occurring in that area. He
worked closely with energy companies
to educate their employees about
the wildlife they might encounter
while working in western Colorado’s
natural gas fields.
In his first year on the job, Swaro
made a large case against a group of
men from New York who had poached
four deer.
The case was solid as Swaro used
his training to conduct a thorough
crime scene investigation, operate surveillance
of the suspects, seize evidence
and interview the individuals
involved. In the end, all four of the
men pled guilty to three or more
charges.
This case in his rookie year was a
sign of things to come in regard to
Swaro’s law enforcement work.
In 2007, Swaro began assisting
agency investigators with a covert
operation to locate an illegal baiting
operation that was widely spread
across public land in the Meeker area.
The investigation uncovered not
only the illegal baiting but an illegal
outfitter who was purchasing private
land licenses for his clients and then
placing them on public land to hunt.
The covert case resulted in felony
charges against the man behind the
operation as well as criminal charges
against four hunters and two hunting
guides who knew that the practices
were illegal.
The case was successful because
of the commitment of Swaro and fellow
wildlife officer Jon Wangnild,
who both dedicated long hours to
scout the land and monitor the activities
of the suspects in the case.
In 2008, Swaro transferred north
to the Craig South district, which covers
some of the state’s finest elk habitat.
In his new district, Swaro is often
patrolling the vast and remote expanse
of the Flattops Wilderness Area on
horseback.
Swaro has also quickly become
involved in the community of Craig.
Shortly after moving into town, he
began to hear about some shady hunting
activity involving three men from
Virginia.
Through close contacts in the
community and through solid surveillance
techniques, Swaro was able to
make a case against the three men. It
was determined that the men had been
involved in the illegal killing of 20
deer and three pronghorn.
The case resulted in 22 felony
charges. Two of the men involved
have pled guilty and the case against
Public Notice
The Meeker Sanitation District has contracted with
Anson Excavating to have the sewer main in
Garfield Street between 4th and 5th Street, north
from Garfield Street on 4th and 5th Street for
about half a block, south on 5th Street to
the alley and west from 5th to 6th Street.
Work is scheduled to start the week of
August 1, 2009, starting at 6th Street and
going east in the alley behind the museum.
The District hopes to have the
project completed by September 31,
2009. The streets in this area will be partially
closed during the project. We regret
any inconvenience this may cause. It is
suggested that residents of Meeker find
an alternate route around this area during
this time. The Meeker Sanitation District
received grant funds from the Colorado
State Department of Local Affairs Energy
and Mineral Impact Assistance Program
along with District funds to replace the
sewer mains.
