SUSTAINABLE MUNICIPALITIES CONFERENCE2014 HALIFAXOn behalf of the CSCE 2014 Local Organizing Committee, we are delighted to invite you to attend and become a partner in theAnnual Conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering in Halifax. The conference will be held from May 28-31, 2014 atthe Marriott Harbourfront Hotel, with associated events held at other landmark venues in downtown Halifax. The conference theme, “Sustainable Municipalities,” promotes and celebrates the central role that civil engineering plays in oursociety nationally and internationally. All aspects of civil engineering are incorporated into the conference, with special focus on thelatest research findings, technical innovations, and project excellence in the civil engineering profession. The Conference will also host three bi-annual International Specialty Conferences on Structural Engineering, TransportationEngineering and Environmental Engineering as well as the 1 st International Conference for sustaining Public Infrastructure.Early in 2015, the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge which links Halifax to Dartmouth, will undergo a major retrofit. After nearly 60 years, the suspended spans must be replaced. The project includes replacement of the road deck, floor beams, stiffening trusses andsuspender ropes on the suspended spans of the bridge, leaving only the original towers and main cables. Upon completion in thefall of 2016, a significant amount of the bridge infrastructure will be new. This project will be only the second in the world to havethis technique completed on a suspension bridge and is sure to attract worldwide attention. (The first was its sister bridge; theLions Gate Bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia.)Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and the greater surrounding areas continue to grow and generate increased movement within theRegion. This growth provides continuous challenges for the existing transportation system. The Regional Plan, adopted by Councilin 2006 and the 5-year review, provides guidance to the municipality on the implementation of tactics to improve the transportationsystem. Recent infrastructure enhancements include the new Larry Uteck Interchange with dual roundabouts and the newDartmouth Bridge Terminal which opened on October 1, 2012, serving 23,000 passengers per day.Environmental engineering has come to the forefront in Canada and Halifax has followed suit. With recent completion of the $330million Harbour Solutions project, raw sewage that previously flowed into Halifax Harbour is now treated with a further commitmentto meet new regulations tied to the federal Fisheries Act. Halifax also has an abundance of high quality drinking water but none tobe wasted. Through adoption of an international best practice, regional utility ‘Halifax Water’ has reduced leakage in its distributionsystem by 40 million litres per day. Come see our environmental stewardship first-hand and leave with a lasting impression.Presentation formats at the conference are designed to encourage participation from industry, academia and government.Distinguished keynote speakers, a large industrial exhibition, and several practical courses will be offered. Technical tours to localsites of interest and an offsite social evening will give delegates a chance to experience Halifax.
