hy?One might wonder: Why bother? Bookman hashad its day. It’s a has-been. Some might argue thatit’s no great loss. But I believe it’s a typographicalgem that’s never been properly revived.ITC’s redesign in the Seventies took it so far fromits roots that it should have been called somethingelse. But that’s the “Bookman” we’ve been stuckwith—like it or not—for a long time. The original,for the most part, has been lost to us. My aim wasto go back to the earlier Bookmans and make atypeface that would restore the dignity (as well asfrivolity) that was lost.As with any revival, it’s an interpretation. I’veleaned heavily toward the more refined look of thedisplay sizes of the older Bookmans. Nevertheless,it also works well for text, although the effect isdifferent than the old Bookmans at smaller sizes.(I hope to do a <strong>Bookmania</strong> Text someday that hasthe look and feel of the old text sizes.)I tried to picture what ATF’s Morris Fuller Bentonwould have done if he had developed BookmanOldstyle the way he did Cheltenham Oldstyle.Bookman Oldstyle (and most later Bookmans) hada certain unpolished look. There is some charm tothis, but I wanted to see the same fit and finish thatBenton gave to his Cheltenham and Century faces.Like traditional Bookmans, the italic is a slantedroman. But it’s not just slanted. It’s opticallycorrected to eliminate the unavoidable distortionthat comes from simply slanting the characters.I considered giving it a “cursive” italic, but itwouldn’t look like Bookman if I did, so I kept theslanted roman. It does have the advantage of beingeasier to read than cursive italics.What would a Bookman revival be without theswashes? I looked at all the different ones thatwere added over the years and decided to do ananthology of the best. I added a few of my ownideas, but tried to keep them as much in the spiritof Bookman swashes as I could.One thing that has been lacking in previousBookmans is typographic “niceties.” With this inmind, I added small caps, old style figures, tabularand proportional figures, swash ligatures, and—why not?—swash small caps.The range of weights in the earlier Bookmansvaried a lot. The earliest ones had just a “regular”weight. Sometimes a boldface was added. Some inthe film font era had more weights. The ITC versionhad four. <strong>Bookmania</strong> is similarly weighted, but withone more on the light end for a total of five weights:Light, Regular, Semibold, Bold, and Black.Some characters differ between roman anditalic: g, g, &, &, $, $. I’ve included the counterpartvariation as an option in each style. There are alsoa few lowercase alternates to give <strong>Bookmania</strong>a more contemporary-looking italic. Finally,I added coMMoNcAsE cAps, which are seenin some type revivals in the Sixties, inspired byBradbury Thompson’s AlphAbEt 26.All features (even the swashes) are included inall weights and styles.

Alongwith Bookman Bold with Swash, itoriginated sometime in the mid-1960s. Ihave so far been unable to find out whodesigned and produced it. I think of it asthe “Sixties Bookman.”Sixties Bookman was widely availableby 1970 in film fonts, as well as rub-downand cut-out type. Letraset catalogs creditedthe design to Miller & Richard, a Scottishtype foundry. This is stretching the truth abit. Miller & Richard did produce a facearound 858,a precursor to Bookman Oldstyle, calledAntique Old Style No. 7. Designed byA. C. Phemister, it was a heavy variationof a face called “Old Style.” (NineteenthcenturyOld Style faces were essentiallyWhat I call “Sixties Bookman” (c. 1965)modern interpretations of Caslon’s types.)It differed from the later Bookman Oldstylein many details.Other foundries imitated the design.The Bruce Foundry did Old Style Antique#310 and followed in 90 with an improvedversion called Bartlett Oldstyle. Shortlyafter, The Bruce Foundry joined AmericanType Founders and Bartlett Oldstyle wasrenamed “Bookman Oldstyle.”The new name came from WadsworthA. Parker, who is also credited with addingthe first few swash characters to Bookman,six in the roman and nine in the italic.Bartlett/Bookman Oldstyle seems to haveoriginated the “slanted roman” italic thathas been a characteristic feature of allBookmans (with two recent exceptions).Bookman Oldstyle was adapted toMonotype casters in 909. Other foundriescopied it, including Ludlow, which added adifferent set of swash characters. Sol Hessdesigned New Bookman for Monotype in927, a more refined version with wedgeshapedserifs. Monotype and BarnhartBrothers & Spindler produced their own“Bold” and “Bold Condensed” styles.However, none of these earlier metalfaces could be mistaken for SixtiesMeola Bookman (c. 1970)Bookman. It’s closest to the larger sizes ofATF Bookman Oldstyle, but significantlybolder, with more contrast between thethicks and thins than other Bookmans andwith smaller serifs. Sixties Bookmanexpanded on ATF Bookman’s modest butdistinctive swash character repertoire with25 in the roman and 47 in the italic.One unfortunate thing about SixtiesBookman’s italic is that most of thecharacters are slanted mechanically, withno optical correction. VGC, maker of theTypositor, created their own version usingthe same name, but with optically correctitalics and a somewhat different set ofswash characters.Other Bookmans appeared in film typeand process lettering from houses such asPhoto-Lettering (Photo Bookman) andHeadliners International (neo-Bookman).Photo Bookman is basically BookmanOldstyle with “mod” swash letters.Neo-Bookman is more closely based onSixties Bookman, but with five weights.Another design, called Meola Bookman,had 97 rather clumsily-drawn swashcharacters, and only a single weight.By 970, the most ubiquitous Bookmanwas Sixties Bookman. Where did it comeFrom a United Airlines ad (1967)from? I’ve yet to see a credit for thedesigner or maker of this version. The besttheory I have is that it was a custom fontcreated for ad campaign in the mid-sixties.Someone who had access to it madecopies. And before long, every typesettingshop had it. Whatever the story is, thisversion of Bookman was everywhere. I hadSixties Bookman on rub-down type sheetswhen I was in high school in the earlySeventies discovering type.In 975, ITC released ITC Bookman (fourweights, with italics), designed by thetalented Ed Benguiat. ITC Bookman was abold departure from previous versions. Thelowercase height was enlarged (in keepingwith the fashion of the time), the swasheswere more reserved, and—significantly—ithad a “cursive” italic, instead of the slantedroman of earlier Bookmans. This italic wasnot related to the style used in Bookman’sAntique Old Style ancestors, which weremore like the italics of Caslon or CenturyOld Style. Instead, it is more like the italicsof Bodoni or Century Schoolbook.By the end of the 970s, ITC Bookmanwas a hit and was eclipsing the olderBookmans, including Sixties Bookman.When it was chosen as one of the fontsBook covers, etc. (c. 1960s & 1970s)included on Apple’s LaserWriter II in themid-980s—making it one of the earliestfonts available for desktop publishing—theeclipse became total.To make matters worse (at least for fansof the old Bookmans), Monotype createdBookman Old Style, a family of fonts withthe same metrics and proportions as ITCBookman. In the details, it looks more likethe old Bookmans, but it has a similar“cursive” italic and enlarged lowercase.Between them, ITC Bookman andBookman Old Style have taken over theBookman “space” in the minds of mostdesigners, and the older—and I’d sayhandsomer—Bookmans are scarce tononexistent in the digital font world.Much of this was on my mind when I wasdigitizing Sixties Bookman for my client.Such a cheesy old typeface, I thought, but itsure is fun drawing these swashes....Then I had a thought. What if I took twoof the best old Bookmans—BookmanOldstyle (specifically, the larger sizes) andthe mysterious but ubiquitous SixtiesBookman, and did a revival based on them?Completely redrawn and refined—not afacsimile of the old fonts. With every<strong>Bookmania</strong> (2011)previous swash character ever concoctedfor Bookman (within reason) and as manynew ones as I can think of. Small caps, oldstyle figures. Swash small caps. Plenty ofweights. Ligatures. Swash ligatures! I wasexperiencing “<strong>Bookmania</strong>.”682 swash characters later, it’s finished.I fear I may have gone too far with theswashes, but I don’t regret it. <strong>Bookmania</strong> ismy love letter to the classic Bookmans. It’sa kind of throwback (ITC Bookman wasprogress, right?), but it’s also brand new,designed for the digital age.And, really, you can completely ignorethose gawdy swashes if you like, andappreciate&the quiet dignity of plain old<strong>Bookmania</strong>.Or not.
