18 <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Activity</strong> <strong>Strategy</strong>Active Schools Co-ordinators are aligned to all school clusters in <strong>Argyll</strong> & <strong>Bute</strong> <strong>and</strong> the FTE allocation is based on the school population ineach locality.Government funding via sportscotl<strong>and</strong> is in place for Active Schools until the end March 2015 (75% grant /25% local authoritycontribution). In addition to this investment, the Active Schools team leverages in additional grant funding annually to the tune of £100k.Active Schools plan <strong>and</strong> co-ordinate programmes with a variety of partners/agenciesThe team work with a range of internal partners (such as Education, <strong>Sport</strong> Development, Leisure <strong>and</strong> Youth Services, Transportation, SocialWork <strong>and</strong> Children <strong>and</strong> Families). Externally we work with a range of local <strong>and</strong> national agencies, community clubs <strong>and</strong> organisations, SocialEnterprises <strong>and</strong> Governing Bodies of <strong>Sport</strong> to name a few. These partnerships allow us to increase the range <strong>and</strong> quality of extra - curricularschool <strong>and</strong> community based opportunities available to young people.Extra- Curricular ProgrammeTo increase the number of opportunities available for school children to be physically active, Active Schools work with schools to continue toincrease the number of extra - curricular clubs running across the authority. We have over 700 extra- curricular clubs within Primary <strong>and</strong>Secondary schools across the 3 terms supported by some 600 volunteers. In many cases we link with National Governing Bodies, local clubs,<strong>Sport</strong>s Development, Leisure Services <strong>and</strong> leisure trusts in order to enhance opportunities <strong>and</strong> where possible, create pathways to localcommunity clubs.Volunteer DevelopmentVolunteers are at the heart of our work in Active Schools. Without their support, the majority of activities couldn’t happen. There are over 600people who kindly give up their time to help volunteer across a range of sports/activities within <strong>Argyll</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Bute</strong> including parents, teachers,other school staff, students, community coaches <strong>and</strong> senior pupils. We’re proud to have one of the largest volunteer networks in the country<strong>and</strong> an extensive CPD/development programme <strong>and</strong> support is offered to further develop skills <strong>and</strong> qualifications both locally <strong>and</strong> within theannual Coaching Champions Weekend.<strong>Sport</strong>s Leadership is now in place for young people across all Secondary Schools. Pupils gain nationally recognised qualifications inleadership/sport, develop lifelong skills <strong>and</strong> build confidence.July 31, 2012
