“IN CONVERSATION WITH ODED LIPSCHITS” 33light of the finds of surveys and excavations. But we must be carefulnot to overextend either sphere. In the end, I would argue that thehistorical synthesis in this book is perched on an uncertainarchaeological foundation. In this book, tentative archaeologicalconclusions are often treated as assured results with which toreconstruct the history behind the biblical text. It may be that thetextual and historical conclusions found here can be established throughan examination of biblical and ancient texts without reference toarchaeology. Perhaps Oded Lipschits’s reconstruction of the sixthcentury still holds; however, many of his central archaeological anddemographic assertions lie beyond the reach of current archaelogicalevidence.BIBLIOGRAPHYBarkay, G.1994 Excavations at Ketef Hinnom in Jerusalem.
