<strong>Bulletin</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>May</strong> <strong>2013</strong>Announcements, Accolades and EventsVijaya Iragavarapu‐Charyulu, Ph.D.,Associate Professor ofBiomedical Science in<strong>FAU</strong>’s Charles E.Schmidt CollegeBonnie Kaye, <strong>FAU</strong>Foundation BoardMember and JonKaye, Charles E.Schmidt College ofMedicine AdvisoryBoard MemberCongratulations Dr. Vijaya Iragavarapu‐Charyulu onreceiving the “Researcher of the Year‐AssociateProfessor” at the Honors Convocation, which tookplace on April 22 in the University Theatre. Dr.Iragavarapu‐Charyulu’s research focuses on breastcancer and the inflammation that promotes tumorgrowth and metastasis. She has received funding fromthe National Institutes of Health and the FloridaDepartment of Health that has resulted in publicationsin major tumor immunology journals. Dr. Iragavarapu‐Charyulu has shown that increased expression of theinflammatory molecule, chitinase‐3‐like‐1 (CHI3L1)correlates with tumor growth and metastasis of breasttumors. She was the first to show that inhibition ofCHI3L1 with chitin microparticles decreases tumorgrowth and metastasis. Dr. Iragavarapu‐Charyulu hasestablished a collaborative project with Boca RatonRegional Hospital to conduct translational research.She hopes to eventually develop therapies to treatbreast cancer.<strong>FAU</strong> Foundation Board member Bonnie Kaye andCharles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Advisory Boardmember Jon Kaye received <strong>FAU</strong>’s Board of TrusteesService Award <strong>for</strong> their exemplary service anddedication to <strong>FAU</strong>’s medical school and the University.The award was originally established to honor <strong>for</strong>mer<strong>FAU</strong> Board of Trustees Chair, Nancy Blosser. This awardis a select honor <strong>for</strong> lay leaders who serve on one ormore of <strong>FAU</strong>’s Advisory Boards and have contributedservice above and beyond normal expectations, andhave made meaningful and lasting contributions to thelife of the University. The Kayes received this award atthe Honors Convocation on April 22 nd .Shawna Watson, M1student in <strong>FAU</strong>’s Charles E.Schmidt College of Medicinehas been accepted by theNational Review Committee<strong>for</strong> Medical Student Trainingin Aging Research (MSTAR)<strong>for</strong> the <strong>2013</strong> program. The <strong>2013</strong> MSTAR Programprovides medical students with an enriching experiencein aging‐related research and geriatrics, with thementorship of top experts in the field. This programintroduces students to research and academicexperiences early in their training that they might nototherwise have during medical school.Continued on page 2


Page 2<strong>Bulletin</strong>Positive experiences in the MSTAR program have ledmany physicians‐in‐training to pursue academic careers inaging, ranging from basic science to clinical research tohealth services research. They have joined the growingcadre of physicians and scientists whose specializedknowledge and skills are in great demand as ourpopulation ages. The <strong>2013</strong> program continues andstrengthens the original Hart<strong>for</strong>d/AFAR Medical StudentGeriatric Scholars Program, established in 1994, which todate has trained 1,706 students from more than 100medical schools. Shawna will participate in an eight‐ totwelve‐week structured research, clinical, and didacticprogram in geriatrics. In addition, she will be invited topresent a poster at the Annual Meeting of the AmericanGeriatrics Society in Orlando, Florida from <strong>May</strong> 15‐17,2014. Shawna’s mentors are Joseph Ouslander, M.D.,Interim Chair of the Integrated Medical ScienceDepartment and Senior Associate Dean <strong>for</strong> GeriatricPrograms in the Schmidt College of Medicine and LoriMcMahon, Ph.D., Professor of Cell, Developmental andIntegrative Biology at The University of Alabama atBirmingham.Laruen Spoo, M1 student in<strong>FAU</strong>’s Charles E. SchmidtCollege of Medicine recentlywon the prestigious summer“Integrated Ethics Internship”at The University of Texas MDAnderson Cancer Center.The objectives of this program are to provide anintroduction to clinical, research and/or organizationalethics <strong>for</strong> qualified individuals with a particular interest inhealth care ethics and to give them the opportunity tocontribute to activities and projects of the Section ofIntegrated Ethics at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center.Components of the program include clinical ethics,research ethics, organizational ethics and academicethics. Lauren has been working under the direction ofCatherine Myser, Ph.D., Director of Ethics, SocialMedicine, and Global Health Programs in <strong>FAU</strong>’s Charles E.Schmidt College of Medicine. Dr. Myser invited Lauren toserve as the M2 Ethics Peer Mentor (Leader) to repeatthe “Ethics in a Short White Coat” clinical ethics educationpilot of last year. In her leadership role, Lauren helped Dr.Myser identify and engage seven other M1s to participateand help with the development of that clinical ethicsprogram and additional medical anthropology/culturalcompetency educational modules <strong>for</strong> Fall <strong>2013</strong> & Spring2014. Lauren and those peer mentors will also contributeto educational scholarship/publications to describe andshare this and other teaching innovations with thebioethics and medical education communities.Congratulations to the following <strong>FAU</strong> Charles E. SchmidtCollege of Medicine have entered their third year and areheaded to seven South Florida hospitals to begin theirclinical clerkships this month. Following two years ofrigorous instruction, hands‐on training and shadowingphysicians, these students will now focus on developingtheir clinical skills and learning to take responsibility <strong>for</strong>patient care under close supervision of communityphysicians and affiliated hospitals.
