Quilting 102ClassThe Quilting 102 class buildson the skills learned in theQuilting 101 class. However,if you didn‟t take the Quilting101 class and are proficient insewing a quarter inch seamand rotary cutting, you willfind the techniques taught inthis class useful. This fourweekclass emphasizes 9-patch star quilt blocksconstructed with half-squaretriangles, quarter-squaretriangles and 45-degreeconnector corners.Additional topics coveredinclude grain lineconsiderations, sashings, useof cornerstones, straight andon-point settings, borderswith flat piping/flange,layering, basting, and basicfree-motion quilting.The class will meet from 9a.m. to noon on ThursdaysMay 5, 12, 26 and June 9 atSt. Andrews EpiscopalChurch. Additionalinformation for the upcomingshows is in the newsletter.Sew-In: Linda Shute invitedmembers to participate in aSew-In to make the make thedisplay-sheets that will be usedin our fall quilt show. It hasbeen scheduled for March 18that the First Christian Churchfrom 9a.m. to Noon; pleasebring a sack lunch.Bonnie Marr announced thatthe Library inventory has beencompleted and the updated listis on the website. Bonnie alsohas patterns available for theRibbon toppers for Fall QuiltShow. All of them have beendesigned for paper piecing.However, she also hasavailable templates for thosewho don‟t care for paperpiecing.2011 Community Quilts:Carmen Tesch:• Announced that therewere 41 baby quilts and 1Military quilt turned in duringFebruary‟s meeting. In addition,a former member who ismoving away has donated 16quilts. (10 of the quilts need tohave the binding put on them)and she asked for volunteers.• All community quiltsneed to have a <strong>Guild</strong> labelsewn on the back before beingturned in.• Award pins for makingthese quilts are usually orderedeach year. As a budgetsavings, she proposed that weconsider using up the surpluspins we have on hand. After adiscussion with members, themembers agreed to use up thepins we have on hand beforepurchasing a new supply.• A beautiful woodenspool display stand (made byDon Porretto) will be a drawingprize at the end of this year.Everyone that turns in aqualified Community Quilt willhave their name put in for thedrawing. There will be onename submitted for each quiltturned during the 2011 year.• Carmen issued aCommunity Quilt Challenge.She held up 4 quilt-kits andasked for volunteers to take thematerial and make aCommunity Quilt of theirchoice using the material inthe kits. They have 2 monthsto complete their quilts andwill bring them back foreveryone to see. The fourmembers who accepted thechallenge are: Roxine Burch,Julie Gumaer, MarleneGwaltney and Mary Hazel.The 2011 Opportunity QuiltTickets: Jan Hickmanannounced that some of thetickets have been printed upwith more to follow. She hasavailable a pink sheet thatexplains the rules andrewards for selling the tickets.Ruth Morris gave an updateon this year‟s challenge. Shehas the instructions available.She also orders The AQSbooks and can order booksthrough AQS for us.Charms Swap: Roxine Burchannounced an opportunity tohave a “Charms Swap”. PatSpaeth will be here is Augustand will teach how to makeher quilts using 5-inch charmsquares. For the next 4months, those who participatewill put together 10 zip-typebags each containing avariety of 10 charm squares(5-inch square) of yourchoice. A table will be setaside so participants cantrade with each other to buildup their stash.2011 Education Committees:• Diana Arikan andCarol Lewis will be teachingthis year's Quilting 102classes. She gave the datesand types of skills they willteach. Something new thisyear is that non-members whowish to take the class may doso. Pricing and detailedinformation are on the website.5


6• Sue Rogers(Workshops) asked everyonewho attended MarshaMcCloskey‟s 2 workshops inMarch to stand up. Nextmonth, we have anotherinstructor, Mickey Depre.She will give two workshops(on April 6th and 7th) and willbe our guest speaker duringthe April meeting. Suedisplayed examples of the 2quilts that will be taught inthe workshop. There are stillopenings available.The 2011 Quilt Show: LindaJirka highlighted a few areasof the upcoming show.• We will be having asilent auction and will beginaccepting donations.• Barb Koenig willoversee the collection ofdoor prizes.• Linda asked for ashow of hands for those whowish to have a quiltappraised. After explainingthe advantage of having anappraisal, she asked for ashow of interest. Linda willcheck into the particulars andwill give another update inthe future.Bus Trips: Bonnie Ratzelannounced that anyonewishing to attend theHouston Show this fall willneed to register with her bynext meeting. She reviewedthe cost and what wascovered in the fee.The 2012 Opportunity Quilt:Bonnie Ratzel announcedthat she needs volunteers tomake the quilt blocks for the2012 quilt. All of the blockswill be paper pieced andvolunteers will make theblocks at home and thenreturn them to her.The 2011 Opportunity Quilt:Margie Dotson announcedthat the name selected for thisyear‟s quilt is “A Sue for AllSeasons”. She also said thatshe has already sold 123tickets at Harrison this weekplus a few more to some otherpeople.Fat Quarter Lotto: There were25 Purple and Green fatquarters that were won by DeeReynolds. The 4 “What Was IThinking” (aka WWIT; theywere formerly known as theUgly‟s) Fat Quarters were wonby Norma Rollinger. April‟s fatquarter theme will be Pastels.2011 Mystery Quilt: MargaretWilburn did a slideshowpresentation on Segments 2 &3 and explained the steps tobe taken. The instructions willbe posted on the website.Program: Sue Rogersintroduced Marsha McCloskeywho gave a wonderful andextensive program on thehistory and creative artistry ofFeathered Star Quilts. Inaddition, Marsha donated herbook “Vintage Moments” tothe guild library.During the Show and Tellsegment, 12 memberspresented items.
