LABORATORY PROTOCOL FOR POINT OF CARE TESTINGPERFORMED BY NURSING STUDENTS1. Only licensed associates can report Point <strong>of</strong> Care test results. This is accomplished<strong>by</strong> operator identification, training, and a complete competency check <strong>of</strong>f per<strong>for</strong>medyearly2. Student nurses will be assigned with a Faculty Member or Nurse Preceptor that hasmet all <strong>of</strong> the above criteria.3. Student nurse under strict observation <strong>of</strong> the Faculty Member or Nurse Preceptor willper<strong>for</strong>m the bedside <strong>testing</strong>.4. No student identification number will be placed in the <strong>testing</strong> database to per<strong>for</strong>mbedside glucose <strong>testing</strong>. There<strong>for</strong>e no student will report any bedside glucose test.5. Student nurses must have a competency check <strong>of</strong>f sheet on file with their college orschool. This check <strong>of</strong>f sheet must be maintained and readily available if suchdocumentation is required <strong>by</strong> state or other credentialing agencies.6. Each Faculty Member responsible <strong>for</strong> student nurses must have a valid competencyon file with the Point <strong>of</strong> Care <strong>of</strong>fice at each facility where these students will berotating. This competency must be renewed yearly in order to remain in the <strong>testing</strong>database.7. Clinical Education Services, Nursing Faculty and Nurse Preceptors will be theresponsible party <strong>for</strong> patient test results. Operator IDs cannot be shared or given toany student <strong>for</strong> the purpose <strong>of</strong> per<strong>for</strong>ming bedside glucose <strong>testing</strong> independently.Infractions will result in the <strong>of</strong>fending party being removed from the <strong>testing</strong> databaseand will not be allowed to per<strong>for</strong>m bedside glucose <strong>testing</strong> in any <strong>of</strong> the Methodistfacilities.8. Pediatric faculty will be trained utilizing the parameters <strong>for</strong> blood glucose reportingin the pediatric setting. The Le Bonheur POC <strong>of</strong>fice will activate the facultymember's SAP <strong>for</strong> use in the Accudata machine. Once completed the <strong>nursing</strong> facultyresponsible <strong>for</strong> student nurses will be placed in the <strong>testing</strong> database.
