This amountcomes from three mainsources: tui-tion, governmentfunding and endowmentfunds in support oftheBursary Program. The annual interest fromthe Bursary Fund is notmeeting the annual needsof our students. Each yearfor the last several years, funds from operationswere drawn to cover thebursary shortfall. The cost is immediate. The benefits last a lifetime. When the Class of 1958 gathered forits 50 th Reunion they recalled andcelebrated countless memories and ofhow those experiences as students ata Jesuit school impacted the menthey became.Among them were men whose familiescould afford the tuition. Alsoamong them were men who couldnot have attended if not for the generosityof alumni and friends at thattime. The stories, the fellowship and theaccomplishments of the Class of1958 made it abundantly clear themission of the school and the importanceof the Bursary Fund have notchanged in the more than 50 yearssince their graduation. In the current schoolyear, 70 students, 12% ofthe student body, receivedfinancial aid totaling $239,585, an average gift of $3,423.In order to keep pace with current and future needs, St Paul’smusthavea healthy Bursary Fund. The current endowment levelsits at approximately $3.3 million. In order for us to meet theannual tuition assistance requests of our families, an additional$1.9 million is required. The primary source of contributions to the Bursary Fund is theAnnual Giving Campaign.Your annual gift can be directed to the General Bursary Fund orto a Named Bursary by completing the 2009 Annual GivingForm, by making your gift online, or by responding positivelywhen St Paul’s students call you this spring to ask for yoursupport.By contributing to the Bursary Fund, annual donors arehonouring the history and tradition of those who have comebefore us, while ensuring future opportunities for generationsof students to come. The Class of 1958 gathered at Homecoming 2008 to celebrate 50 years since graduation.2008 ANNUAL GIVING REPORT5

St Paul’s High SchoolFrom the Past • In the Present • For the FutureSince 1926, the high school has made three location changes. Since 1984, the school has undergonethree major capital expansions or renovations. All of these projects have served one purpose:to provide more and better opportunities for the students of St Paul’s High School.St Paul’s moves from originallocation on Selkirk Ave to thecorner of Ellice and Vaughan1931St Paul’s College movesto the University ofManitoba campus1957The Monaghan Wing (formerJesuit residence) is renovatedto open new classrooms, computer lab, band roomand faculty workrooms1984The Jesuit Legacy Campaignopens new classrooms, art andband rooms, multimedia lab,new cafeteria and CrusaderFootball locker room2000Ceiling, lighting andclassroom renewal2008/0919261932196319912007St Paul’s CollegeHigh SchoolestablishedPaul Shea Hall built, doublingthe school’s capacity. The Jesuits assume ownership.St Paul’s High Schoolmoves to Grant AvenuePaths of Discovery Campaignopens new science and computerlabs and the Fr Holland SJLearning CentreMajor roof replacementTo compare the St Paul’s of today with the St Paul’s of 25 years ago is to mark asubstantial increase in the opportunities for students not only to grow, but to thrive. From challenging and engaging academic curricula, to a vastly greater variety ofathletic and extracurricular programs, students at St Paul’s find a home for thegrowth of diverse interests and talents. The Freshman Retreat, Kairos, the Maroon & White Society and Christian LifeCommunities have all been introduced in the last 15 years to support and nurturestudents on their spiritual journey on the path to becoming Men for Others. The St Paul’s High School Strategic Plan (2007) assessed the needs of thecommunity and defined objectives and strategies for the future.Implementing the strategies and achieving the objectives of the future will requirecontinued reflection, prayer and discernment. This will require a greaterawareness of the challenges and opportunities ahead, and the commitment of allcommunity members in order to fulfill the promise of the future for our students, for our school and for Catholic education in Winnipeg. Moreover, this commitment to the challenges and opportunities of the presentand future will be met. As a result the core values of faith, service and excellencewill be secured for generations to come.Did You KnowThe following parameters must be takeninto consideration in meeting the challengesand opportunities of the future.St Paul’s receives no provincial governmentfunding from the departmentof education for any projectsor expenses not directly related toteaching—all major capital expensesmust be funded from other sources.Tuition and partial governmentfunding are intended to accountonly for annual operating expenses, not major capital projects. The Bursary Program is a priorityfor St Paul’s and the focus of themajority of fundraising activitiesundertaken annually by the school.2008 ANNUAL GIVING REPORT7
