2The Long Haul and the Howdy You All!February is a short month, 28 days only. How come then so much can be fit in to it? Itseems a lifetime ago a group of us were in Mazatlan preparing to bring Cap’n Jake north. Then we hit Cabo for 24 hours. If anyone needs advice on the nightmare of doing yourown exit paperwork in Cabo, here stands an expert. In a nutshell, get some other entity todo it for you; it will be worth the money whatever it costs. The bureaucratic procedurewas supposed to be made a little easier but do not believe that.Had I known what kind of a trip up we were in for, I would have relaxed a little. The tripfrom Cabo to Mag Bay was smooth as one could hope for, taking it slow, losing a coupleof marlin on the way. Heading into sunset we pulled the r.p.m’s up to make safe anchoragefor the night. We still do not know exactly what happened, but the port engine lostpower, oil pressure light came on, we dropped the revs down immediately, heard a coupleof clunks and turned the power off. No more port power. On one engine next morning we headed north, right into a head-on, no holds barred kickass storm. 34 hours at about 6 knots of unrelentless battering.Thankfully, after Tortuga Bay it lay down. The remainder of the voyage was more relaxed, albeit on one engine. Why don’t they design a 3 engine boat?If anything could put that experience in the past and cheer us all up, we had just that onSaturday night. Tony Milazzo and Liz Fox presented the club with one hell of party. We all donned the cowboy outfits, slipped on the hats, unwrapped the chewin’ tobacco, ignored the Bare Back Mountain jokes and just plain old kickedthe sod to the best live band the club has seen. Larry Dean and theShooters were fantastic. Larry is a club member to boot. Lookforward to a repeat performance at opening day, March 19.Speaking of opening day, call the Chair, Kia Anderssonand volunteer your help, there is a lot to do and we willappreciate your time.Get on board! I said, “someone put ya up to this didn’t they, is this a joke?”He said he wanted to help out in the club, and he really wanted to do it. I said, “only if you take it for two years” (ya know I’mgonna be Commodore next year and I’m always look’n ta make my job easier.) He said, “OK” and I couldn’t give him the bookand the keys fast enough. Thanks Jack, I know you will do a great job.Every time someone starts talking about cruising, the first place they are going to go is Baja Mexico. They say, I think we’ll stophere or spend a couple days anchored there and then someone says, where’s that? Well, Scott Roseland was telling me about amap he had framed and was gathering dust in his garage. He said it was a big map of Baja. Thanks Scott, Steve Cordova willhang it in the back room.Speaking of the back room, there is an American flag folded in a beautiful wooden box with a certificate saying that this flag hasflown over the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor and is presented to Pacific Mariners Yacht Club. This wonderful gift to the club wasgiven by member Gary Laff. Gary, we all thank you very much.Opening Day at our club will be Sunday March 19 th . 7Coastal Commission Decision Gives Catalina’sBald Eagles a Continued Helping Hand. The American bald eagle restored in recent yearsto Catalina Island have a better chance than ever ofcontinuing to soar above her secluded coves.Bald eagles disappeared from the Channel Islands in the 1970s due to contamination byDDT wastewater dumped offshore for 30 years by the Montrose Chemical Corporationand other polluters. The DDT left the eagles unable to hatch fragile eggs on their own.A decade-long lawsuit settled in 2001 found Montrose financially responsible for widespreaddamage to plant and animal habitats. With funding from the settlement, beginningin 1991, staff of the Institute for Wildlife Studies removed the fragile eggs fromnests on Conservancy-stewarded lands, substituted “dummy” eggs, and later, returnedthe healthy chicks that had been incubated and hatched at other facilities. The recoveryeffort has thus far yielded nearly 100 bald eagles on Catalina Island, about 20 of whichhave stayed while the others relocated as far north as Canada. However, last summer, the Settlement trustees– six state and federal environmentalagencies –hatched a plan to redirect funding from Catalina to other projects in theNorthern Channel Islands and in Mexico.Despite more than 500 letters supporting continued eagle restoration on Catalina Islandwhich was closest to the dumping, sustained the most damage, and has by far the mostvisitors to enjoy the eagles (more than a million each year including 60,000 school children)— the Trustees plan announced in November redirected Catalina funding. In a surprise decision in December, however, the California Coastal Commission reviewedthe facts and determined that to be consistent with the California Coastal Act,funding to help ensure the continued presence of eagles on Catalina must continue forat least the next 10 years at $250,000 a year.Officials with the Conservancy, which is charged with protecting the native animalsand habitats of Catalina’s wildlands in perpetuity, said they were thankful for theCoastal Commission’s decision “which will help ensure that Catalina’s bald eagles willcontinue to inhabit the Island and be accessible to for diverse public audiences to enjoy,”said Leslie Baer of the organization’s executive team. So, next time you are anchored in your favoritecove, keep an eagle-eye out for Catalina’smagnificent bald eagles. For information on how to make a donationto one of the Conservancy's projects, volunteeryour time, or become a member pleasecall 310 510 2595 ext 114,or log ontowww.catalinaconservancy.org.Photos “Courtesy of the Catalina Island Conservancy”

8Travels with Rupertby Karl Lindblom.Or, a house boat delivery from ‘Frisco. With apologies to SteinbeckOne morning while sitting in front of the Mermaid Cafe with the morning curmudgeons Nadia announced that she had justbought a 58 foot house boat in San Francisco and she needed a crew to deliver it. Always a sucker for a pretty face I immediatelyvolunteered. And to show the world what an utter fool I am, I talked her into taking “Rupert” her little Jack Russell doggywith us. Rupert is a famous little cur, after biting 4380 people, victim 4381 tossed him overboard somewhere off Catalina. Hissurvival to bite again earned him front page coverage in all the papers. For some reason I can’t fathom I like the little mutt, butthen I like Larry too, no accounting for taste I guess. Two weeks or so later we had a workable window to make the dash south. We headed north in an over loaded van.All were jovial except Rupert, who was in a snit over the assendectomy he received from a German shepherd three days before.Rupert thought the shepherds leash would hold. What’s the last thing to go through a bugs mind when he hits the windshield? His ass! Now Rupert didn’t have one. He was a good sport though, he only bit Nadia four times on the way to the boat.About the time we got to Bakersfield, Rupert decided the trip had become a little dull, so he decided to entertain us by singinglike Scatman Crothers, Clarence “frog man” Henry, and Peter Paul and Mary. At least in Rupert's mind that's how he sounded. We found the boat tugging quietly at her lines. A diver had just removed three feet of growth from the hull. He asked us if wehad made out our wills, then told us he had his priest say a prayer for us. The Tikki Mermaid is a 58 foot Carrie Craft, a cathull, converted to a party boat. Nadia has found an open niche in the sewer tour trade in MDR. The existing competition catersto weddings and company diners and other insidiously boring affairs. The Tikki Mermaid will be Tikki bar, catering to theneeds of singles. A fun little boat. Don’t take your Baptist mother. Rupert thought it would be a fun boat too, lots of hidingplaces to plan an attack. There were five of us. Jim the captain, Paul the mate, Karl the amorous deck hand, Nadia the cook and owner, and of courseRupert who would provide entertainment. We were out the Gate at 1600. Near sundown I noticed the voltage on the port engine was dropping fast. Maybe a bad cell.We decided to fire up the auxiliary, but the bloody thing would not start. With all lights off to save power, Paul started to tracethe problem. He was on all fours, head upside down in a hatch when Rupert saw the chance of a lifetime. He snuck up betweenPauls’ legs to the crotch and let him have it. Paul went ass over teakettle down the hatch and into the bilge. Rupert knew whathe was doing, as Paul laid ear deep in the swirling flotsam and bilge water he saw the offending valve that had some how beenshut off. That fixed, we assembled in the bridge to enjoy the rest of the ride south. By now Rupert had a new game. “Oh pet me, I’msooo lonely.” CHOMP. I decided to hit the hay in the baggage compartment till my three to six watch. That's when things gota little weird. Rupert bit the captain for the last time and got himself launched down the companion way to the main deck.Rupert could not climb back up the ladder so he just sat at the bottom and began to sing. He sang “don't crush my violets”, “I’lltake you home again Kathleen”, “believe me if all those endearing young charms”, and at about the fiftieth stanza of “ninetynine bottles of beer” I drifted off to sleep.I awoke in time for my watch to the glowing eyes of Rupert. He just starred at me. I went up to the bridge to stand my wheelwatch, but no one was there. Little wonder she was handling so erratically. I called out. Nothing. No one on the for deck. Noone on the main deck. No one in the galley. Where are they Rupert I asked?Quoth the Rupert: “Arffer more”I checked the nav log, no entrees for the last two hours. “shit” I thought,” they could be be anywhere ‘tween here and 18miles”. I grabbed the mike to call the Coast Guard, but the mike was chewed in two. I went for the other radio, same thing, achewed mike. “Christ you loony mutt, what you do that for?”Quoth the Rupert: “Arffer more”“I’ll fool you pooch, I’ve got a hand held in my sea bag!” But when I got to the sea bag I found a Rupert sized hole through it,and the hand held destroyed. I looked at that infernal fuzzy face and said “and to think I begged her to bring you along.”Quoth the Rupert: “Arffer more”The trip into Moro Bay was dreadful. Images swarmed in my mind of Nadia and the crew floating dead in the sea, but especiallyof Nadia, how could I tell the morning curmudgeons that I had drowned the only woman we had ever loved?

9At the fuel dock I let the Tikki Mermaid blow gently onto the pilings to beheld there by the breeze, and climbed the ladder to the dock. Finding theauthorities, I led them to the boat, but they took one look at Rupert's’fiendish glowing red eyes and horns, and refused to go aboard. Just then Iheard the heavenly voice of Nadia calling my name. I awoke in a hospitalroom to Nadias’ angelic face. “wa what happened?” I asked. The docsaid I had taken some tainted Dramamine and had been hallucinating. He tossed the bottle to me... it had teeth marks on it.Dennis Pietsoand his Bluenosewon first inwooden hull in theMidwinter Regatta.Saint Patrick’sDay Celebration.WednesdayMarch 15thFood, Fun and More.7 pm$7.00

14YOUR PMYC WEBSITEI hear most of you are now receiving your monthly Log by visiting http://www.pmyc.org (according to its great editor Kent). So we’ve been exploringnew information for the website for you, the Members. The first idea many of you mentioned was to have a place for informationabout Racing and Cruising. And now we do.Just go to the website and click on Racing & Cruising on the top navigationbar. You’ll find the 2006 Racing Schedule for PMYC and SBRYC(provided by Andy Kopetzky), the 2006 Cruising Schedule (Fred Whitman),and a place for Cruising Members to post their latest position information, websites, or text log entries, if that want to share this data with alltheir friends back at PMYC. We already have two cruisers sharing with us,and hopefully a lot more will participate. We’ve also added a page aboutour Guest Dock for visitors information. We also want the site to represent the Club to potential members and guestsin the best possible way. Therefore, if you have pictures that show our facilitiesor activities in a manner that would reflect well on PMYC to theoutside world, or if you have ideas, submissions, corrections, etc., please share them with me. It’syour website.Roger DaughertyWebmaster, PMYCpmyc@pmyc.orgRobin is the big winner inthe 31 st annual One More Time Regatta.Advertise in The Log.Contact the editor.kent@andermarine.com(310) 463-0077Saturday Feb 25 saw lite to medium air and fairly flat seas for the 31 st running ofthe Wooden Hull Owners’ Association (WHOA) one more time regatta. Many ofthe usual suspects returned and there were surprises. The race featured a 90 yearold boat that trophied, a sloop that was as close to a DNS as can be and won herclass, and one of the original 1976 organizers of the race participated. The little guys kicked butt as the winds were the lightest since the 1990’s. It wasthe second year in a row that a 32 ft PC took home all the marbles.Robin, Jonathan Blindman’s PC took line honors, first in sloops and cutters ‘A’ and the Peggy Slater perpetual trophy. Herounded weather T mark (the final frontier; space is so vast, etc.) and set the chute for El Segundo with what looked like littleor no fuss and feathers. For his efforts he received the new (old?) perpetual trophy that had been sitting in storage for yearsand was first handed out to (you guessed it) Robin in 1976. The presenter was Greg Alexander, one the original WHOA‘scurvy sailors’. Alexander sailed his 46 ft PCC, Lark to second in sloops and cutters ‘A’ Fleet.WHOA Staff Commodore Jon Duff took third in sloops and cutters ‘A’ with his beautiful K43, Raitaea.Carlton Chase’s S&S 57, Niuhi was first around T mark but they started with the ‘B’ Fleet.Other winners of the ‘A’ Fleet included Siouxsie, a 36 ft Herreschoff Ketch owned by John Salisbury, and Patience, an identical36 footer sailed by Denton Porter.

15Siouxsie won split rigs ‘A’ and best corrected time trophy for split rigged boats. Mr. Porter has been active in this fleet formany years and is still sailing well into his 80’s. Third in split rig ‘A’ fleet was Mack Steagall and Amethyst. He took hisfolks (PMYC members Bill and Barbara) along for the ride and they had a good time.Winner of the ‘B’ Fleet, and second split rig boat to finish was Larry Wave’s Angelman Ketch Bettina. Larry beat all the ‘B’boats by a wide margin and nearly caught some of the ‘A’ fleet. The second ‘B’ split rig boat was Lady Gwendolyn, a 90 year old 26 ft gaff ketch owned and driven by erstwhile boat driverand all around good guy Eddie Hollister. Hollister has been around MDR forever and there was enough breeze to get the oldgirl around the course in trophy winning time.Third place split rig ‘B’ went to WHOA Commodore Jerry Klein in Webfoot, a 36 ft Crocker Sea Dawn ketch. The boat hasnew sails and was able to claw its way to ‘T’ mark in the light stuff. In sloops and cutters ‘B’ Julia Gombert took home second in her 32 ft Atkins cutter.Karl Lindblom had a problem with an alternator bracket that had become disconnected: the old bolt-in-the-bilge how-did-itget-thereroutine. After getting help from one of the local South African sailor/mechanics who ran up to the Ship’s Store forparts and gathering up his all girl crew, he went out there had a late start and still took home first in sloops and cutters ‘B’.The legends attached to ‘hen frigates’ were proven false at least this one time. The girls (Leslie Bond, Tina Michel and NancyYoung) all had so much fun-that’s what it’s all about. The coveted Turtle trophy was won again by Mike Fabian and Resolute, an Angelman ketch. This was the second year in arow for Mike and the rest of the racers might be experiencing ‘turtle envy’.The fleets adjourned to Chace Park after the race for a short time for ‘open house’. These boats are beautiful when seen closeup and truly evoke a labor of love. There are so many examples of fine joiner work and assembly, the varnish is like a mirrorand some are still competitive and can run with the ULDB’s.Thanks to Liz and Tony of the Country Western Party organizing committee for their patience with the two concurrentevents. Many wooden hull sailors stuck around and had a great time. Larry Dean and co put on a great show.Everyone thought cowboys and sailors had nothing in common. Dock cleats have ‘horns’ like cattle for ‘roping’. Hay wasused as bedding by those unfortunate souls in the fo’c’sle in the 18 th and 19 th centuries on sailing ships. Some trips aboardsailing ships truly resemble encounters with bucking broncs. My thanks go out to my race committee: Jack Barrish for being a great timer and keeping the fleets honest, John Grote did agreat job as cannoneer/spotter; Dave Smith in his first time as race committee helper did a fine job and expressed a willingnessto learn.Dennis and Andy Peitso kept the taxi service running to and from Chace Park with the Squid (which, incidentally is a prettygood foto boat and fit right in with all the woodies); Ben Kopetzky shot some amazing pictures for the group after the race. Finally a big thank you to Leon Milhon for being a committee boat skipper-there are none finer.Andy Kopetzky, Race Chair
