Newsletter 1 (Term 3) – 3 August 2012
Principal’s Comment:
Welcome back to a busy, invigorating and challenging Term 3. Days are drawing out, the sun is
warming up and spring promises to visit us soon.
Congratulations to all students and their families who performed so outstandingly in a wide range of
activities over the holidays. It is great to read and hear of their achievements. The list of the students
and their successes appears later in the newsletter.
Overall I was pleased with the examination results and if we see the expected 10 to 20 percent
increase improvements in the end of year examination results I will be very pleased indeed. There is
one thing that is very clear that every one of us has room for improvement. Whether it is in the
amount of preparation we do, or the ability to respond appropriately and accurately to questions, or
the method used to study, results can be improved. However, this is the scary part – there are only 48
teaching days left to our first examination – Mathematics. All students need to be mentally and
academically fit to achieve to their level of personal excellence. It is essential this term that each
student’s focus is on academic progress, the consolidation of information and examination
preparation. Mrs Haverkort and Mrs Irwin have offered extra tutorials (see in Administration section).
However to be successful we all need to ensure that there is the right balance of work, relaxation and
fun.
Last Tuesday we held our parent/student/teacher conferences and it was great to hear the buzz around
the rooms as parents, students and teachers planned the way forward. I hope part of the outcomes for
each of the meetings was a clearly identified pathway for future improvements in each of the subject
areas discussed. Thank you to all parents who attended for your involvement in your child’s learning
and your patience when timings were a little tight or late, and thank you to all staff – it certainly was
a marathon effort. As part of our process we will review the system and I would appreciate any
comment to assist this.
Last Thursday our Open Evening was bursting at the seams with 69 parents and 35 students attending.
Mr Hamlet made it very clear that there are limited numbers of spaces in each year level so it is
imperative that enrolments are received as soon as possible. There is obviously a great deal of interest
in what we are doing at Huanui College and I found the evening and the ensuing conversation very
invigorating indeed.
ADMINISTRATION Phi Wilson - Administration
Enrolments 2013: We are receiving enrolment enquiries almost daily and I would ask you to spread
the word to prospective parents to submit applications for children promptly.
Arrival & Departure Times: Students who arrive late, or leave school during school hours must
report to the office for signing out and/or signing in. Please remind your child to do this before they
leave the school grounds.
Absences: Thank you to those parents who are particularly fastidious in reporting their child’s
absence in the morning. Unfortunately, we have had to chase up a few unqualified absences. We are
happy to receive these messages by email or telephone.
After School Prep & Tuition: Supervising Staff have asked me to remind parents that their children
must be collected by 4.30pm from Tuition and 5.00pm from After School Prep. Unfortunately some
parents are arriving late and the staff member has had to remain behind because of this. Please
respect the times.
English Tuition
In Term 3, Mrs Irwin’s Y9 and Y10 classes will be offered after–school tuition on Wednesdays and
Thursdays from 3.30 until 4.30, starting in Week Two and finishing in Week Nine. Normal tuition
cost of $10 per session applies.
Year 7 Junior English tuition will recommence in Term 4; however, students are free to come in at
lunchtime during Term 3.
SCIENCE Fiona Boorer - HOD
This year’s entries for the Science Fair were, in the opinion of everyone who saw them, the best yet!
We had an incredible variety of projects, of an excellent standard. Our three judges had a very
difficult time whittling the entries down to a short list – and in the end it was not that short! We have
decided to send our largest contingent yet to the Central Northland Science Fair at Forum North.
The following students (in no particular order!) are invited to participate:-
Grace Cameron, Lauren Kenrick, Letty Hamlet, Nico Steinmetz, Malcolm Young, Kahurangi Ross-
Hoskins and Daniel Davies, Shanice Croft Kemp, Holly Cook, Victoria Kerr and Georgia Browne,
Ford Cameron, Louis Poot, Jimmy Hamlet, Zac Miller Waugh, Ally Browne, Hannah Pevats and Ella
Rankin, Courtney Bell, Nick Nagel, Tom Roberts, Jeremy Crawford, Ella Short, Richard Young,
Aaron Greenhalgh, Brandon Ahlers.
Congratulations to all the above!
Students will shortly be receiving a letter with details of what to do for the Northland Fair. I will be
doing their entries, but if any of you who already know about the entries would like to give me any
suggestions about which of the special awards they should be entered for, I would be delighted to
receive them.
Sincere thanks to our 3 judges – Mark Sanders, Andy Boorer and Andy Thomas for their sterling
work over three days.
MATHEMATICS Vicki Haverkort – HOD
Congratulations to our Mathletes...
Each year, the New Zealand Maths Olympiad Committee (NZMOC) select students to represent NZ
at the International Maths Olympiad (IMO). In this year's Junior Maths Competition Reka Norman
was within the Top 30, Shintaro Fushida-Hardy and Daniel Davis were within the Top 100. All three
students were selected to complete a set of selection problems by the committee. From among the
students who complete these, twenty four are invited to a residential camp, to be held in Auckland
between 6 th and 12 th of January, and eventually six are selected to attend the IMO in July (which, in
2013, will be held in Colombia). We wish them well!
Results of the Otago University Junior Mathematics Competition
This is one of the most challenging Mathematics Competitions since it requires students to show
detailed, logical working to a series of challenging problems set by Otago University.
Congratulations to our students who did well!
COMMERCE DEPARTMENT NEWS Vernice Young - HOD
On the first day back at school this term, the Year 10 Business and Chemistry classes attended a tour
of the NZ Refining Company. The students were addressed by a member of the Commercial
department, Natalie. Natalie is a qualified engineer who has now moved into planning – she is
responsible for ensuring that there is crude oil to process. She spoke about the economic aspects of
the Refinery, and how they have to keep costs low to keep profits up! This taught us a lot about the
behind the scenes running of the Refinery.
We then had a tour of the Refinery – conducted by Julian Young. He told us about many of the
processes involved in the creation of different types of petroleum products. It was good to see that
by-products such as carbon dioxide and sulphur are utilised by other companies to create useful
goods. The chocolate prizes for all our answers were also very welcome.
We appreciate the time and effort that both Natalie and Julian put into their presentations to teach us a
few things about the running of a business in the secondary sector of the New Zealand economy.
The Year 10 Business class is also involved in the BP
Community challenge this year. One of the fund raising
ventures is the Scarecrow Competition.
This is being run for the Cancer Society, and we hope to
create an awareness of their work just in time for Daffodil
Day on 31 August.
We would like as many people as possible to create 50cm
scarecrows with a yellow Daffodil Day theme. All of these
scarecrows will be displayed at the Whangarei District
Library where we have forged a link with the Children’s
section. We are looking forward to seeing many
interesting scarecrows.
Thank you to all the families who brought in chocolates
and biscuits for our prize hamper for Wednesday’s mufti
day.

The call went out to the whole
school for spades, gumboots and
change of clothing in order to carry
out the planting of the Wetlands
area.
Everyone ‘dug’ deep when it came
to planting more than a thousand
native seedlings.
