Principal’s Comment:
Over the past two weeks I have enjoyed watching our students perform on a range of stages both
within the College and Northland wide.
We have just completed the speech finals and what an array of wonderful and diverse topics the
speakers chose.
Earlier this week I attended the Science Fair awards evening to witness the success students from
Huanui enjoyed. (Al Kirk, Headmaster of WBHS commented that it appeared to be a benefit evening
for Huanui College.) What impressed me most was the modest decorum and the manner in which our
students presented themselves to receive their prizes. Well done and congratulations to all of our
students who involved themselves in the Science Fair. (See results below)
On Wednesday, I managed our year 7 and 8 Soccer team at the NSPA tournament. Over six games
our team scored 48 goals and had only 2 scored against them. Our Year 7 and 8 girls netball team
performed just as outstandingly – winning the game I watched by over 30 goals to 1 and winning
others just as impressively.
Our students are starting to be noticed on the academic, cultural and sporting map Northland wide.
Congratulations to all students for their involvement and continued drive for excellence. Thank you
to all those parents who support the College during these events. Without your support we would
struggle to provide the breadth of programmes we do.
Huanui College Excels at Northland Science Fair 2012
After a superb School Science Fair, we sent 22 entries to the Northland Science Fair at Forum North.
From these, 11 exhibits were chosen as prize-winners, culminating in some of the top awards of the
whole event. Students also looked extremely smart as they went up to receive their awards in school
uniform. Congratulations to the following, but also “well done” to all those who entered into the
spirit of Science Fair, whether just at school, or by showcasing their talents at Forum North, even if
they did not ultimately win a prize. The Science Department and the rest of the school are very proud
of you all!
EXAM WEEK: Year 9 and Year 11 students will be sitting mock Checkpoint and IGCSE exams in
Week 8 (10 – 14 September) mainly in the Gym. Students should be well into their revision
programmes and parents should have received an exam timetable by now. If not, please contact the
office.
Enrolments 2013: We are receiving enrolment enquiries almost daily and I would ask you to spread
the word to prospective parents to submit applications for children promptly. On a similar note, if
your child is not returning to Huanui College in 2013, please inform the school a term in advance or
as soon as is possible.
Uniforms: Unbelievably, while we are being subjected to rain and wintry weather, this is the time
that orders for our School Summer Sandals must be made to ensure that delivery is in time for Term
4. Ordering will also be taking place for our new enrolments for 2013 and therefore, the collective
number can take some time. Please ask your child to come to the office for a fitting and to place an
order. (We have size samples in stock.) School Caps must be worn in Terms 4 and 1, and should be
ordered now to ensure their availability.
Absences: Thank you to those parents who are particularly fastidious in reporting their child‟s
absence in the morning. Unfortunately, we have had to chase up a few unqualified absences. We are
happy to receive these messages by email or telephone.
H U A N U I S O C I A L !!! !!! !!! !!!
Students and the School Council have been lobbying hard for the last few weeks for the
College to organise a School Social, along the lines of the previous years. Responding to
this, we have booked a DJ and the Glenbervie Hall for the evening of Friday 14 th
September. The event will start at 6pm and is planned to finish at 9.00pm, with
everyone left by 9.30pm. Tickets are $5, available from the school office now. The DJ
and Hall costs are significant so we will need to see a push on ticket sales early to cover
the overheads for the event. Food will be finger food, bring a plate, and food is allocated
for each year group. We ask that dishes be served in picnic style paper plates and bowls
or drinks in plastic cups. This should stop the clean-up crew from being at the venue too
late!
As ever, it would be superb if we had a few parent supervisors to help with the evening.
At present we are working on a ratio of 1:10, so would probably need around 12 staff
and teachers to support the event to make it viable. Please contact Phi Wilson in the
office or Chris Swanwick if you can help.
The Social has been really well attended in previous years and we are keen to see it
continue as a great event for the College. The students always appreciate the chance to
get together and enjoy the opportunity to blow off some steam after exam pressures,
especially for years 9 and 11.
Revising for your Mathematics IGCSE Examinations
1 Start revising in good time!
Try to start at least eight weeks before the exam.
That way, you can avoid last-minute panic.
You should have been working through your exam book.
2 Begin with a plan!
● Work out how many weeks you have before the exam.
● Decide how much time you will spend on maths revision each week, and when.
● Do a timetable with the topics you plan to cover each week.
● Keep your timetable safe. Check it often to see how you are doing, and what‟s next.
3 Don’t just sit and stare!
For example, try some or all of these …
● Make brief notes of the key points – or draw a mind map or place „post-it‟ notes around
the house.
● And keep them safe, to read again another day.
● Use colours and highlighting to pick out key points.
● Say what you have learned out loud. Tell the wall!
● Get a friend to ask you questions about it.
● Do questions from the textbook, mathletics or your Revision Guide.
● Watch „Gertie‟, bring in a pen drive to copy this resource if you haven‟t already done so.
4 Do lots of questions from past exams
● Don‟t leave it until the exam to try exam questions. You might get a shock!
● Practise answering exam questions as part of revision. That will help to give you
confidence for the exam.
5 But don’t work too hard!
● Our brains get tired after a while.
● So it is more effective to revise in quite short bursts than in long sessions.
● If you feel you are not taking anything in, take a short break. Take some fresh air. Dance
around. Sing.
● Then back to work, refreshed.
● Revising late the night before the exam is not a good idea.
Finally, exam day arrives …
You on exam day – calm, cool, and confident.
If you plan your revision well, and stick to your plan, there is every chance you will feel that way.
You had a good rest last night. Your pens, pencils, calculator, ruler and eraser are ready.
Now it is time to show everyone what you can do.
Mathletics
A great way to revise for Mathematics is to log on to www.mathletics.co.nz.
Please encourage your child/children to use this valuable resource. If they need help on the
curriculum topics they can click on the question mark. A help window shows them a different
example. If they get a question wrong they can click on the question mark, this time the help window
shows them how to do the exact same question.
You can get weekly reports of your child‟s progress...simply go to
http://scs.scaffoldeducation.co.nz/ParentCentre/registration.asp.
Enter your child‟s username and password and your email address. You will be emailed every
Monday.

How to get the most of Mathletics:
Encourage your child to use it 3-5 times a week.
Encourage a balance between Full Curriculum and Live Mathletics.
Take the time to work together with your child and use the help option (click on „?‟).
Ask your child to show you how many Gold bars or points they have.
Print their certificates out and display them on the fridge.
