Introduction1 YEAR 10: THE YEAR OF DECISIONSThe Universities Admissions Centre (NSW & ACT)Pty Ltd (UAC) has prepared this booklet on behalfof participating institutions to help you make decisionsabout which courses to take in Years 11 and 12.If you plan to apply for tertiary study you should selectHSC courses that keep the doors open for entry toa range of tertiary courses.UAC’s participating institutions have listed the areas ofstudy that they plan to offer in 2012 (as far as is knownat the time this booklet went to print). Where applicable, the participating institutions have shown details of:n course and subject prerequisitesn assumed knowledge andn recommended studies.Refer to the Glossary on pages 80–81 for definitionsof the above terms. For more information:n see your careers advisern contact the institutions – see ‘ParticipatingInstitutions’, starting on page 13, for telephonenumbers and addressesn read the UAC Guide. Reference copies are availablefrom your careers adviser and/or in your school library.Entry to tertiary institutions in NSW and ACT iscompetitive and not all students who satisfy theminimum requirements for entry to a particularinstitution are offered a place in the program of theirchoice. This booklet is intended, however, to makeit easier for you to choose which courses to take.Participating institutions are aware that not every schooloffers the full range of HSC courses. If your school doesnot offer a course recommended as preparation for tertiarystudy, or if you can’t study the recommended course, ask the institution of your choice what supplementarystudies you may need to undertake.Subject selection and the UAIIt is a myth that choosing certain HSC subjects willautomatically maximise your UAI. The best way tochoose your subjects is to consider:n what you are good atn what you like doingn what will best prepare you for what you areplanning to do after the HSC andn what gives you some flexibility if you changeyour mind. For more information on the UAI, see section 3 below.2 ACT SYSTEMIf you are a college or school student in the ACT andyou are thinking about studying at a participatinginstitution, check equivalence between the NSW HSCand ACT Year 12 Certificate courses (see below). Also ask advisers or teachers at your school or college.EnglishACTMajorNSWEnglish (Standard) orEnglish (Advanced)Major/Minor HSC English Extension 1Double Major HSC English Extension 2MathematicsACTNSWMathematical Methods MathematicsMajorSpecialist Mathematics HSC MathematicsMajor/Minor Extension 1Specialist Mathematics HSC MathematicsDouble Major Extension 2Information about the calculation of the ACT UniversitiesAdmission Index (UAI) is available from the ACT Board ofSenior Secondary Studies – call (02) 6205 7174.3 UNIVERSITIES ADMISSION INDEX (UAI)UAI coursesUAI courses are Board Developed courses for whichthere are formal examinations conducted by theBoard of Studies that yield a graded assessment. These are the only courses that can be includedin the UAI calculations.3.1 What is the UAI?The Universities Admission Index (UAI) is a numericalmeasure of a student's overall academic achievementin the HSC in relation to that of other students. This measure allows the comparison of students whohave completed different combinations of HSC courses. The UAI is calculated solely for use by institutions, either on its own or in conjunction with other selectioncriteria, to rank and select school leavers for admission.Other criteria such as a portfolio, interview, audition, questionnaire or test may also be taken into account inconjunction with the UAI for certain courses. See pages13–80 for further information on selection criteria.Students who indicate on their HSC entry forms thatthey wish to be notified of their UAI will receive a UAIAdvice Notice from UAC. UAIs are also made availableto institutions for selection purposes. The UAI isreported as a number between 0.00 and 100 withincrements of 0.05.Specifically, a UAI indicates the position of a studentrelative to their Year 10 cohort. That is, a UAI of 80.00indicates that students with that UAI have performedwell enough in the HSC to place them 20 per cent fromthe top of their Year 10 cohort, had all the Year 10students completed Year 12 and been eligible for a UAI.4Introduction

3.2 Who receives a UAI?While UAIs are calculated for all UAI-eligible students, only students who indicate on their HSC entry formsthat they wish to be notified of their UAI receive a UAIAdvice Notice from UAC. These students will receivetheir written Advice Notices at the same time as theyreceive their HSC results from the Board of Studies. The UAI Advice Notice includes:n a student’s UAIn a list of the UAI courses which the student studiedand the categorisation of each course andn the number of units of each UAI course that wereactually included in the calculation of the UAI.There are two cases where a UAI will not be shown onthe UAI Advice Notice. The first is when a student receivesa UAI between 0.00 and 30.00, in which case the UAI willbe indicated as "30 or less". The second is when thestudent has not met the requirements for a UAI, in whichcase the statement "Not Eligible" will appear.3.3 Eligibility for a UAITo be eligible for a UAI a student must satisfactorilycomplete at least 10 units of UAI courses. These UAIcourses must include at least:n eight units from Category A courses andn two units of English andn three Board Developed courses of two unitsor greater andn four subjects.See Table 1 on page 10 for the definition of ‘course’and ‘subject’.If you want to receive a UAI, you must check yourprogram of study carefully to make sure that youwill be eligible.3.4 Categorisation of UAI coursesUAI courses are assessed by formal examinationsconducted by the Board of Studies and have sufficientacademic rigour to be useful as preparation foruniversity study.UAI courses are classified as either Category A orCategory B courses. The criteria for Category A coursesare academic rigour, depth of knowledge, the degreeto which the course contributes to assumed knowledgefor tertiary studies, and the coherence with othercourses included in the UAI calculations. Category Bcourses are those whose level of cognitive andperformance demands are not regarded as satisfactoryin themselves, but their contribution to a selection indexis regarded as adequate if the other courses includedin the aggregate are more academically demanding.Courses to be examined in 2011 and their categoriesare listed in Table 1 on pages 10–12. At present thereare few Category B courses.3.5 Calculation of the UAIYour UAI is based on an aggregate of scaled marksin 10 units of UAI courses comprising:n your best two units of English andnyour best eight units from the remaining units, whichcan include up to two units of Category B courses.Marks to be included in the UAI calculations can beaccumulated over a five-year period but if a course isrepeated only the last satisfactory attempt is used inthe calculation of the UAI.For students accumulating courses towards their HSC,scaled marks are calculated the year the courses arecompleted. Marks are not re-scaled each year. The UAI is a rank NOT a mark.3.6 What does ‘satisfactorilycompleted’ mean? You will be considered to have satisfactorily completeda course if, in your school principal’s view, there issufficient evidence that you have:1 followed the course of study prescribed by theBoard of Studies, and2 applied yourself with diligence and sustained effortto the set tasks and experiences provided in thecourse by the school, and3 achieved some or all of the course outcomes.Receiving a mark for a course on your Record ofAchievement issued by the Board of Studies is anindication that you have satisfactorily completed thatcourse.3.7 How is the UAI determined? The UAI is determined by:n scaling the raw HSC marks (which are the averageof the raw HSC examination marks and themoderated school assessments) provided by theBoard of Studiesn calculating an aggregate of scaled marks for eachUAI-eligible studentn ranking UAI-eligible students based on thisaggregate of scaled marksn determining rankings based on what the rankingswould have been if all students in the Year 10 cohorthad completed Year 12 and been eligible for a UAI.This ranking is expressed as a percentile roundedto the nearest 0.05. This is the UAI.Note that rankings depend solely on performancein the HSC, not on performance in Year 10.More detailed information on the scaling processis available from UAC (see 3.9 on page 6).Bonus points and UAI cut-offsThe UAI cut-off for a course indicates the minimum UAIrequired for selection into the course for most Year 12applicants. Some applicants may receive an offer eventhough they have a UAI below the published cut-off.Often this is because those applicants have beenawarded bonus points by a particular institution.Bonus points are allocated for things like strongperformance in HSC subjects, living or attendingschool in a certain area, and applying for considerationthrough Educational Access Schemes. Bonus pointsare not added to your UAI. Bonus points don’t changeyour UAI; bonus points change your selection rank. For most Year 12 applicants, their selection rank istheir UAI. But if you have been awarded bonus points, your selection rank = your UAI + bonus points.Introduction5

3.8 Limited UAIUnder certain circumstances you may be eligible fora Limited UAI while not being eligible for a UAI.EligibilityTo be eligible for a Limited UAI based on your 2011HSC studies you must meet all three of the followingconditions:n be at least 20 years of age on 1 March 2011 andn be taking between five and nine units of UAIcourses in 2011 that include at least two units ofEnglish andn have attempted the units at one sitting. You cannot accumulate a Limited UAI.Calculation of a Limited UAIThe Limited UAI is calculated using scaled marks fromUAI courses comprising:n at least one unit of English, andn the best four other units of Category A courses. The Limited UAI is calculated only for the year in whichyou sit the HSC courses. If you are eligible for a LimitedUAI, you will be sent a separate Limited UAI Advice byUAC at the same time as the HSC results and UAI Adviceare posted. Some institutions use the Limited UAI in conjunctionwith other criteria for selection purposes.3.9 Further informationUniversities Admissions Centre (NSW & ACT)Website: www.uac.edu.auPublications:n UAC Guide – published in July/August each yearand provided through schools at no charge tocurrent NSW HSC and ACT Year 12 students; alsoavailable to purchase from newsagents and UAC.n Report on the Scaling of the NSW Higher SchoolCertificate – published in April/May each year andreference copies provided to schools at no charge;also available to purchase from UAC.n The Universities Admission Index:A Technical Report – published in 1998when the UAI was first introduced; available topurchase from UAC.n You and your UAI – published in December eachyear and posted at no charge to current NSW HSCYear 12 students.Publications are available by visiting UAC's office, calling UAC on (02) 9752 0200, or using the order formon UAC’s website www.uac.edu.au. A subject is the general name given to an areaof study. A course is a branch of study within a subject.A subject may have several courses. For example,English (Standard), English (Advanced), HSC EnglishExtension 1 and HSC English Extension 2 are allincluded under the subject English. HSC subjects andHSC courses are listed in Table 1 on pages 10–12.The following is a general guide to the HSC subjectsand courses accepted by institutions in NSW and theACT for entrance purposes. Always check with therelevant institution to confirm the information.Category A coursesEnglishTwo units of English must be included in the calculationof your UAI. In addition, some institutions require Englishas a subject prerequisite or course prerequisite. Checkeach institution entry for details. If you are consideringstudying English at tertiary level, English (Advanced) orHSC English Extension 1 is usually recommended.Biology/Chemistry/Earth and EnvironmentalScience/Physics/Senior ScienceIf you wish to study science or a course based onscience at tertiary level – for example, agriculture, allbranches of engineering and applied sciences, naturalresources, computing, medical or paramedical sciences, forestry or rural science – you are advised to study asmuch science and mathematics as you can at school bytaking as many courses as you are able to handleeffectively within the HSC rules.MathematicsA knowledge of mathematics is desirable for varioustertiary courses. It is also recommended, along withphysics, for all degree courses requiring a study of physics.Ideally you should select either HSC MathematicsExtension 1 or HSC Mathematics Extension 2 if you wishto continue studying mathematics, mathematicalstatistics, actuarial studies or computer science beyondfirst year. These courses are the best preparation forthe study of all branches of engineering and physicsbeyond first year.Mathematics (not General Mathematics) is recommendedby most institutions as the minimum requirement forfurther study in a variety of subjects, includingarchitecture, agricultural economics, biological sciences, business, chemistry, commerce, economics, geology, psychology, social sciences, statistics, and urban andregional planning.Languages other than EnglishMost institutions offer courses in languages for firstyear students who have no previous knowledge of theparticular language. If you are considering further study in a language, however, you will find that including the language in yourHSC program is to your advantage. For some institutionsthis is essential if you intend to proceed to fourth yearhonours in that language. Also ask the relevant institution whether specificrequirements have been set for the study of a language.Beginners courses are accepted by all institutions for6 Introduction

entrance purposes but are not recommended aspreparation for study in that subject.Ancient History/Economics/Geography/Modern HistoryAny of these HSC courses may be included in your HSCprogram to satisfy tertiary entrance requirements. Attertiary level, however, they are taught on the assumptionthat students have not studied them previously.MusicMusic can be included in your HSC program by studyingMusic 1, Music 2 or HSC Music Extension. If you areconsidering further study in music, find out theminimum entry standard required. Some coursesrequire an audition.Visual ArtsThe study of Visual Arts is acceptable for entrancepurposes. If you are considering further study in visualarts, however, find out the minimum entry standardrequired. Most courses require presentation of aportfolio of work.Agriculture/Engineering StudiesThese HSC courses are accepted by institutions forentrance purposes. Agriculture is a useful preparationif you intend to study agricultural science, agriculturaleconomics or rural science, while Engineering Studiesis a useful preparation for the study of engineering. The best preparation includes Chemistry, Physics andMathematics if you wish to study agricultural scienceor rural science; or Chemistry, Physics and HSCMathematics Extension 1 if you wish to study anyof the branches of engineering.Aboriginal Studies/Business Studies/Dance/Design and Technology/Drama/Food Technology/Information Processes andTechnology/Legal Studies/Community andFamily Studies/Personal Development, Healthand Physical Education/Society andCulture/Software Design and Development/Studies of Religion/Textiles and DesignThese HSC courses are accepted by all institutionsfor entrance purposes.Category B coursesOnly the best two units from your Category B coursesare available for inclusion in the calculation of your UAI.Category B courses are listed in Table 1 on page 12.5 AREAS OF TERTIARY STUDYThis is a general guide to the broad areas of studyoffered by institutions. Always check with the relevantinstitution to confirm the information. For a generalguide to which institutions offer which areas of study, refer to the Areas of study index on pages 83–84Architecture/Building/Design and PlanningStudents intending to undertake courses in these areasare advised to study two or more units of mathematics(not General Mathematics). A general background inscience, particularly Physics, may be helpful but is notessential. Visual Arts or Industrial Technology may alsobe useful.Arts/HumanitiesDegree programs in arts and liberal studies do notusually require a particular program of study atsecondary school. The study of English is required bysome institutions and recommended for all studentsin this field – check the institution entries for details. If you wish to study a language other than English as yourmajor subject, however, you are advised to include thelanguage of your choice in your HSC program, althoughin many cases you will be able to take introductorylanguage courses that do not require prior study.Business/Commerce/Economics/Marketing/ManagementCourses in accounting, banking, econometrics, economics, finance, management and marketing may require at leasttwo units of mathematics (not General Mathematics) aseither a prerequisite or assumed knowledge.HSC Economics or Business Studies are considereda useful, but not essential, preparation for coursesin these areas.Students wishing to undertake actuarial studies at tertiarylevel generally require HSC Mathematics Extension 1or HSC Mathematics Extension 2 as a prerequisite.Communications/Media StudiesMost of these courses do not require a particularcourse of study at secondary school. Some institutions recommend the study of Englishin preparation for communication and media courses –check the institution entries for details. In additionto the UAI, some institutions may require you to completea questionnaire and/or attend an interview.Creative and Performing ArtsStudents intending to undertake studies in the creativeand performing arts areas are advised to gainexperience outside the school environment. Entry tomost of these courses requires an audition, interview orportfolio (or combination of these) as well as a suitableUAI. The study of Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Music 1,Music 2 or HSC Music Extension may be helpful forcourses in creative and performing arts areas. Someinstitutions will base selection to a creative arts courseon the marks obtained in the HSC. Special admissionprocedures may be available if you are unable toinclude suitable subjects in your HSC program.Earth and Environmental SciencesMost earth and environmental science courses do notrequire a particular program of study. Most institutions, however, recommend a background in science subjectssuch as Chemistry, Mathematics (not GeneralMathematics), and Physics or Biology.Education/TeachingIn some institutions, courses in education may be takenin an arts, science or other program. Some institutionsalso offer separate teacher education programs in earlychildhood, primary and secondary education. See boxon the following page for requirements to be employedas a primary or secondary teacher. Students who wishto qualify as a secondary teacher must also fulfil theentry requirements for study in their proposed area ofteaching specialisation. For intending early childhood teachers, some institutionsassume or require satisfactory levels of mathematicsand/or English.Introduction7

How to read the institutions’ entriesInstitutions describe their requirements in different ways because they have different policies. The followinginformation will help you to understand each institution’s entry. Check the Glossary on pages 81–82 for furtherclarification of the terms.Courses listed by institutions: If an institution requires you to havestudied a specific course in your HSC, the proper name of thecourse is stated – for example, HSC Mathematics Extension 1. SeeTable 1 on pages 10–12 for a list of HSC Board Developed Courses. In some subject areas, more than one course may meet therequirements. When this occurs, institutions have not listed all ofthe courses they accept. You can assume that as well as the coursethey have included, institutions also accept courses in the samesubject area that challenge higher order thinking and extensioncourses that enable students to undertake more in-depth studyin areas of special interest. For example, if institutions acceptMathematics they also accept HSC Mathematics Extension 1or HSC Mathematics Extension 2, but not General Mathematics. If the institution does not require that you have studied a specific levelin your HSC, it is stated as ‘any two units of’. For example, where youread ‘any two units of English’, this means that any two unit Englishcourse is acceptable. Institutions that ask for ‘any two units of science’indicate what courses this includes at the beginning of their entry.Interpreting the SymbolsINSTITUTIONEnquiries+ Contact In Person: ContactInstitutionInstitutionPostal AddressStreet Address(Suburb State PostcodeSuburb State(0x) xxxx xxxx Fax: (0x) xxxx xxxxMAIN AREA OF STUDYP = PrerequisitesMajor StudiesSP = Subject Prerequisites(Areas of study are generally offered as Bachelor degrees A = Assumed Knowledgeunless Dip, AssocDip or AssocDeg is shown in brackets) R = Recommended StudiesN = NoneARTSAboriginal Studies N None for first-year unitsAboriginal Australian History, Anthropology,Biology, History, Politics, SociologyCOMMERCEMarketing and Hospitality Management P Questionnaire and interviewA MathematicsSCIENCEComputing and Information Systems A MathematicsElectronics SP* MathematicsR HSC Mathematics Extension 1 orHSC Mathematics Extension 2Assumed knowledge (A):Some institutions assume youhave a knowledge of specific HSCcourses or equivalent before youbegin the course. If you do not have the assumedlevel of knowledge but do have asuitable UAI, you may still beselected for the course but youmay find some difficulty copingwith your studies. Some institutions offer bridgingor introductory courses to helpyou achieve the required levelof assumed knowledge – contactthe relevant institution for details.Recommended studies (R): Theseare HSC or equivalent or othercourses that the institutionssuggest will assist you in yourchosen tertiary course. If you have not studied theseHSC courses, your chances ofselection are not affected.Course prerequisites (P):Some courses require you to haveachieved a specified standard in an HSCcourse or equivalent before you will beoffered a place in the course. If you do not have the required courseprerequisite/s, you cannot be selectedfor the institution’s course even thoughyou may have met the admissionrequirements. Not all institutions have courseprerequisites. Table 1: HSC Board Developed Coursesto be examined in 20 11 ## correct at time of printingBelow is a list of the HSC Board Developed Courses being examined by the NSW Board of Studies in 2011.The courses appear in alphabetical order by subject area. Languages other than English are listed separately. The courses are classified by the institutions participating in UAC as either Category A courses or Category Bcourses. For the purpose of calculating the Universities Admission Index (UAI), an eligible UAI pattern of studymust include at least eight units of Category A courses and no more than two units of Category B courses. For more information about:n categorisation of UAI courses – read section 3.4 on page 5n the UAI – read section 3 on pages 4–6Definitions:nnnnsubject – is the general name given to an area of studycourse – is a branch of study within a subject. These definitions areusually included in each institution’s calendar/handbook.Academic yearThe part of the year when students are enrolled intertiary study. The academic year normally commencesin February/March when classes begin, and ends withthe examination period in November/December. It maycomprise two semesters or three terms.Additional selection criteriaCompulsory requirements, either in addition to, orinstead of, normal entry requirements used byinstitutions for selection purposes for a particularcourse/s. For example, interviews, auditions, portfolios, supporting statements, questionnaires and tests. These requirements are listed as prerequisites (P) inthis booklet and applicants must satisfy theprerequisite/s to be eligible for selection. You should seek further information now as some ofthese require materials and evidence of experience, tobe compiled or documented during Years 11 and 12.Admission requirementsThe minimum qualifications required for you to beconsidered for entry to a particular course. Entry tomany courses is competitive, and the attainment ofthese minimum qualifications does not guarantee youwill be offered a place.Advanced diplomaAn award requiring two or three years full-time, orequivalent part-time, study.Areas of studyA general guide to the areas of study offered byinstitutions is provided in section 5 in the front ofthis booklet. Refer also to ‘Areas of study index’ afterthe Glossary.Associate degreeAn award requiring two years full-time or equivalent parttimetertiary study, which equates to the first two years of adesignated three-year degree course.Assumed knowledge (shown as A)A level of achievement in a specified course/sat the NSW HSC (or equivalent) considered desirablefor successful study in a tertiary course or first-yearsubject.If you do not have the assumed level of knowledge butdo have a suitable UAI you may still be selected for thecourse, but may be placed at a considerabledisadvantage. Some institutions offer bridging or introductory coursesto help you achieve the required level of assumedknowledge. However if you include one or more ofthese bridging courses in your program, it could preventyou from completing your tertiary course in theminimum time.Refer also to ‘How to read the institutions’ entries’ onpage 9.Bachelor degreeAn award requiring three or four years full-time, orequivalent part-time, or sandwich, study.Combined/double degreesCombined/double degrees allow students to completetwo degrees in less time than would be taken if the twodegrees are studied sequentially.DefermentPermission to delay the commencement of a course fora fixed period, usually one year. Some institutions only grant deferment in specialcircumstances.DiplomaAn award usually requiring two or three years full-time,or equivalent part-time, undergraduate study. Thesecourses are usually characterised by more emphasis onpractical skills than on the theoretical content requiredfor a degree.Distance educationA form of full-time or part-time study that takes placeoutside the tertiary institution, either at a study centreor at home by correspondence. Periodical residentialattendance at on-campus sessions is usually required.HSC subjects and coursesA subject is the general name given to an area of study.A course is a branch of study within a subject. A subjectmay have several courses. For example, within thesubject of English the courses include English (Standard),English (Advanced), HSC English Extension 1 and so on.Major studiesAreas of in-depth study or specialisation within acourse, consisting of a sequence of subjects/units ina single discipline generally studied throughout thecourse. Major studies comprise more subjects/unitsthan minor studies. In some courses it is possible tohave more than one major study. Some institutions may refer to major studies as majorsor specialisations.Glossary81

PrerequisitesAn essential prescribed level of achievement whichmust be reached in a specified course/s at the NSWHSC (or equivalent) before an applicant is considered. There are two types of prerequisites: courseprerequisites and subject prerequisites. These areexplained below and in the front of this booklet. An institution may specify both types of prerequisites;only one type of prerequisite; or may not specifyprerequisites at all. If prerequisites are not required byan institution generally a level of Assumed Knowledgeis specified (see above).Course prerequisites (shown as P)Some courses require that you have achieveda prescribed standard in a specified NSW HSC(or equivalent) course/s before an offer of a placewill be made.If you do not have the required course prerequisite(s)you cannot be selected for the institution’s course eventhough you may have met the admission requirements.Course prerequisities may also relate to otherrequirements such as an interview, portfolio orquestionnaire.Subject prerequisites (shown as SP)Some particular subjects within a tertiary courserequire that you have achieved a prescribedstandard in a specified NSW HSC (or equivalent)course/s before you are allowed to enrol in thoseparticular subjects. If you do not have the required subjectprerequisite/s, but have met the admissionrequirements, you may still be selected for thecourse, but may be unable to take the particularsubject within the course. Some institutions offer bridging or introductory coursesto help you achieve the required standard. However if you include one or more of these bridgingcourses in your program, it could prevent you fromcompleting your tertiary course in the minimum time.Subject prerequisities may also relate to otherrequirements such as an interview, portfolio orquestionnaire.Recommended studies (shown as R)These are NSW HSC or equivalent or other courses thatthe institutions suggest will assist you in your chosentertiary course. If you have not studied these courses your chances ofselection are not affected.Undergraduate courseAs used in this booklet, an undergraduate coursemeans one leading to a first qualification, namely anassociate diploma, or a diploma, or a first degree ofbachelor.UniversityA tertiary institution offering undergraduate andpostgraduate degrees and diplomas.Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)The Universities Admissions Centre (NSW & ACT) Pty Ltd(UAC) is the central office that receives and processesapplications for admission to most undergraduatecourses at participating tertiary institutions. UAC notifiescurrent NSW HSC students of their UAI and posts offersof admission to tertiary courses to successful applicants.Universities Admission Index (UAI)The UAI is a rank made up of scaled marks thatprovides a measure of overall academic achievement inthe HSC. It helps institutions rank applicants for tertiaryselection in a fair and equitable way. The UAI iscalculated by institutions and released by UAC.82Glossary
