PrerequisitesAn essential prescribed level of achievement whichmust be reached in a specified course/s at the NSWHSC (or equivalent) before an applicant is considered.There are two types of prerequisites: courseprerequisites and subject prerequisites. These areexplained below and in the front of this booklet.An institution may specify both types of prerequisites;only one type of prerequisite; or may not specifyprerequisites at all. If prerequisites are not required byan institution generally a level of Assumed Knowledgeis specified (see above).Course prerequisites (shown as P)Some courses require that you have achieveda prescribed standard in a specified NSW HSC(or equivalent) course/s before an offer of a placewill be made.If you do not have the required course prerequisite(s)you cannot be selected for the institution’s course eventhough you may have met the admission requirements.Course prerequisities may also relate to otherrequirements such as an interview, portfolio orquestionnaire.Subject prerequisites (shown as SP)Some particular subjects within a tertiary courserequire that you have achieved a prescribedstandard in a specified NSW HSC (or equivalent)course/s before you are allowed to enrol in thoseparticular subjects.If you do not have the required subjectprerequisite/s, but have met the admissionrequirements, you may still be selected for thecourse, but may be unable to take the particularsubject within the course.Some institutions offer bridging or introductory coursesto help you achieve the required standard.However if you include one or more of these bridgingcourses in your program, it could prevent you fromcompleting your tertiary course in the minimum time.Subject prerequisities may also relate to otherrequirements such as an interview, portfolio orquestionnaire.Recommended studies (shown as R)These are NSW HSC or equivalent or other courses thatthe institutions suggest will assist you in your chosentertiary course.If you have not studied these courses your chances ofselection are not affected.Undergraduate courseAs used in this booklet, an undergraduate coursemeans one leading to a first qualification, namely anassociate diploma, or a diploma, or a first degree ofbachelor.UniversityA tertiary institution offering undergraduate andpostgraduate degrees and diplomas.<strong>Universities</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> (UAC)The <strong>Universities</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> (NSW & ACT) Pty Ltd(UAC) is the central office that receives and processesapplications for admission to most undergraduatecourses at participating tertiary institutions. UAC notifiescurrent NSW HSC students of their UAI and posts offersof admission to tertiary courses to successful applicants.<strong>Universities</strong> Admission Index (UAI)The UAI is a rank made up of scaled marks thatprovides a measure of overall academic achievement inthe HSC. It helps institutions rank applicants for tertiaryselection in a fair and equitable way. The UAI iscalculated by institutions and released by UAC.82Glossary
