LCOE Briefs 3/9/12offer our community. This year's event boasted some greatcoordination of services and highlighting of resources. LCOEwas represented by not only Stephanie in the C&I department,but Cheryl and Tammy, Juan Huerta, Safe Schools with Seanand Josh, and Victoria with AmeriCorps. He is joined here by proudparents Jena and John Meador.The Lake County Office of Education's Science Center, at TaylorObservatory, proudly organized the first county-wide RoboticsWorkshop on Saturday February 18 th , 2012 at their facility inKelseyville, under the direction of Facility Coordinator BarbaraMcIntyre. Michael Schenck, Director of Technology for KonoctiUnified School District and his third grade son Alex, who hasbeen working with Lego robots for over 3 years, helped tosupport the effort.The workshop was run by members of an award-winning roboticsteam from Folsom, CA; ninth grader Akshay Rathish andeleventh grader Saiyeesh Rathish along with their father, RathishJayabharathi, an engineer for Intel. After nearly a decade ofsupporting his sons's interest in robotics, Rathish becameinspired to help other robotics groups develop. He sees thatrobotics is one way for kids to learn engineering concepts withoutknowing that they are actually learning.This was the first in what is planned to become an ongoingseries of workshops for children and adults throughout thecommunity. In each of the two-hour sessions, 20 students, ages9-14 worked in teams. Each group included two roboticists, onelaptop and one Lego MindStorm NXT 2.0 robotics kit. During thefirst session, facilitators provided a brief overview of robots in ourworld today, leading into the hands-on construction of a robotand finishing with general programming techniques.Participants had to improvise in the construction of their robot, gathering pieces froma huge pile of Lego robot parts.
