He is joined here by proudparents Jena and John Meador. The Lake County Office of Education's Science Center, at TaylorObservatory, proudly organized the first county-wide RoboticsWorkshop on Saturday February 18 th , 2012 at their facility inKelseyville, under the direction of Facility Coordinator BarbaraMcIntyre. Michael Schenck, Director of Technology for KonoctiUnified School District and his third grade son Alex, who hasbeen working with Lego robots for over 3 years, helped tosupport the effort. The workshop was run by members of an award-winning roboticsteam from Folsom, CA; ninth grader Akshay Rathish andeleventh grader Saiyeesh Rathish along with their father, RathishJayabharathi, an engineer for Intel. After nearly a decade ofsupporting his sons's interest in robotics, Rathish becameinspired to help other robotics groups develop. He sees thatrobotics is one way for kids to learn engineering concepts withoutknowing that they are actually learning. This was the first in what is planned to become an ongoingseries of workshops for children and adults throughout thecommunity. In each of the two-hour sessions, 20 students, ages9-14 worked in teams. Each group included two roboticists, onelaptop and one Lego MindStorm NXT 2.0 robotics kit. During thefirst session, facilitators provided a brief overview of robots in ourworld today, leading into the hands-on construction of a robotand finishing with general programming techniques.Participants had to improvise in the construction of their robot, gathering pieces froma huge pile of Lego robot parts. One of the many engineering skills developed inhands-on robotics experimentation. In the second session participants utilized these robots andprogrammed them to perform various goals; move in a square orfile:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/cherylg/Desktop/LCOE%20Briefs%203_9_12.htm[3/9/2012 12:29:54 PM]

This interactivelearning modality inspires interest in Science, Technology,Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills in a rich, experientialenvironment.Children's Museum of Art and Science (CMAS), in partnershipwith Konocti Unified School District, is piloting a program atLower Lake Elementary this year. CMAS' goal is to act as afacilitator to bring students together with these kinds of materials, and increase awareness and support for kids having access toexperiences like these. Upper Lake High School has beenworking with advanced robotics concepts and programming skillsfor several years, with students attending state and nationalcompetitions. The Taylor Observatory has developed a stronginterest in integrating robotics into core curricular areas, afterschoolprograms, weekend and summer workshops and sciencecamps throughout Lake County.Several county-wide K-12 staff members were in attendance asparents, community members and interested supporters.
