4 May, 2007 Page 3Notebook CareThe following set of reminders about notebook care was communicated to allstudents earlier this week. They are intended to help students avoid inconvenienceand unnecessary cost. When students are first issued with their notebooks, each is supplied with a thinfoam sheet between the screen and keyboard. This 'screen saver' is part of thenotebook kit and students are expected to continue using it to protect the screenfrom wear and tear during storage and transport. Failure to use this foam sheetcould lead to excessive wear and tear on the screen for which students will be heldaccountable. The Notebook Service Centre will replace the foam sheet free ofcharge should it become lost or damaged. Any student who isn’t currently using a'screen saver' should collect one from the Notebook Service Centre as soon aspossible. While the notebook carry bag provides excellent protection against impact andtravel damage, students need to ensure their notebook is properly packed into thecarry bag to obtain the full benefit. The main body of the carry bag should only beused for the notebook. The pouch on top of the carry bag is deliberately small andshould only be used for the power supply, power cord, and, if students have them,a network cable and/or small mouse. When travelling to and from school, thecarry bag must always remain inside the backpack. Students who travel by publictransport should always keep their backpack with them - on their lap if sitting orbetween their legs if standing. If a student’s notebook sustains damage on publictransport because it is not in their possession, it may not be covered by insurance. As part of the College Computer Use Policy, students are required to maintain theirnotebook in good working order, not alter its configuration and not install utilitiesor other software that alters the user interface. This includes products like StyleXP and Windows Blinds. If students tamper with their notebook’s configuration oralter the user interface, the notebook will be re-imaged and the standard servicefee ($35) will be charged. Each student requires full administrator rights to his notebook because of the wayMicrosoft has designed Windows XP. Consequently, each student’s account is amember of the Administrators group on his own notebook. These administratorrights allow students to install hardware devices and additional educationalsoftware. Students do not gain any additional rights by using the localAdministrator account. In fact, on a student notebook, the Administrator accounthas less rights than the students own account. The purpose of the Administratoraccount is to allow Service Centre staff to log on to notebooks when they arebrought into the Service Centre for repair. If students tamper with the localAdministrator account and Service Centre staff can not access the notebook torepair it, the notebook will be re-imaged and the standard service fee will becharged. Finally, a few words about backing up. Almost every week, a notebook hard drivedies and a student loses everything on his notebook. Some students keep theirfiles backed up and while a failed hard drive may be an inconvenience, it’s not adisaster. Unfortunately, many students don’t back up – instead, they hope it won’thappen to them. A student’s work is his time and effort – it’s too important to takerisks with. If it was worth doing in the first place, it’s worth backing up.If you have any questions about any of these matters, please contact theNotebook Service Centre (nbsc@whitefriars.vic.edu.au or 9872 8302).Mr Warren MoseleyComputer Centre ManagerOUR LADY OF SION COLLEGE, BOX HILLINFORMATION EVENING FOR YEAR 7 2009, 2010 & 2011Thursday 17 May 2007 at 7.30pm in the Louise Humann Centre atOur Lady of Sion College.
