M. <strong>BADAWĪ</strong> <strong>al</strong>-<strong>DİRANĪ</strong>(1312-1387/1894-1967)Muhammed Badawi <strong>al</strong>-Dirani, an eminent c<strong>al</strong>ligrapher of Syria in the twentieth century, wasborn in Damascus in 1894. He is c<strong>al</strong>led <strong>al</strong>-Dirani in reference to Daria, a village in theDamascus countryside. He was educated in Quranic schools from his early childhood. Heengaged in c<strong>al</strong>ligraphy when he was twelve years old. He took lessons from c<strong>al</strong>ligrapherMustafa Siba‘i (died in 1919), student of Sahib Q<strong>al</strong>am (died in 1897), who taught him therules of ta‘liq, a c<strong>al</strong>ligraphy style that he later mastered. Then he met c<strong>al</strong>ligrapher Yusuf Agahbin Muhammed -known as Rasa- who was sent by Sultan Abdulhamid II to Damascus towrite the inscriptions of the Umayyad Mosque after the fire that hit it. Badawi learnt fromhim the c<strong>al</strong>ligraphic styles of diwani, thuluth, naskh and riq‘a. For seventeen years Al-Diraniworked in his office of the famous c<strong>al</strong>ligrapher Mamdouh <strong>al</strong>-Sharif, who taught him the rulesof kufi and j<strong>al</strong>y diwani. Later, he opened his own office in <strong>al</strong>-Bous street, in the Sulaimaniyahdistrict near the Umayyad Mosque.In the ta‘liq style, Badawi developed a style similar to Sahib Q<strong>al</strong>am’s. His style wasappreciated by profession<strong>al</strong>s as well as the public, and c<strong>al</strong>ligraphers followed his example. Hewas <strong>al</strong>so distinguished in thuluth, the style of Rasa and Mamduh, but followed the example ofc<strong>al</strong>ligraphers Shafiq and Aziz <strong>al</strong>-Rafa‘i. He mastered j<strong>al</strong>y thuluth, as is seen in the inscriptionsof the Othman, Rawdha and Thuraya mosques, the Ministry of Justice building and in thePeople’s Assembly building.Al-Dirani taught c<strong>al</strong>ligraphy at Damascus schools, to many prominent c<strong>al</strong>ligraphers such asZuhair Manini, Abdul Razzaq Qusaibati, Othman Taha, Ahmed <strong>al</strong>-Mufti, Mahmoud <strong>al</strong>-Hawari etc. He <strong>al</strong>so taught writers and poets including Nizar Qabbani, Dr. Shakir Mustafa,Dr. Najat Qassab Hassan, Yasser <strong>al</strong>-M<strong>al</strong>ih, among others.He traveled to Istanbul to see the c<strong>al</strong>ligraphic works locad there and stayed with therenowned c<strong>al</strong>ligrapher Hamid <strong>al</strong>-Amidi. Al-Dirani <strong>al</strong>so traveled to Alexandria where he wasthe guest of Mohammed Ibrahim. He then traveled to Cairo where he met c<strong>al</strong>ligrapherMuhammed Husni <strong>al</strong>-Baba and then returned to Istanbul in 1965.Al-Dirani was a close friend of c<strong>al</strong>ligrapher Hashim <strong>al</strong>-Baghdadi who wrote the epitaph on histombstone after his death on 25 July 1967.In 1968 c<strong>al</strong>ligrapher Badawi <strong>al</strong>-Dirani was granted the Syrian Order of Merit of First Class.He left a wide range of excellent c<strong>al</strong>ligraphic works in <strong>al</strong>l c<strong>al</strong>ligraphy styles, but mostly inta‘liq style.(The Centre thanks Mr. Ahmad <strong>al</strong>-Mufti for providing the biography of his late master, c<strong>al</strong>ligrapher Mr.Badawi <strong>al</strong>-Dirani).4
