College Policies and ProceduresExtensionsRequests for an extension must be made via the appropriate form available from the Assistant Principal(Curriculum) prior to the due date, in consultation with the relevant Head of Department and classroom teacher.Exam ProcedureStudents should be aware that security and authenticity of work are paramount during exams. Therefore, studentsmay not bring any contraband material/s to be supervised exams, including notes, stored data on calculatorsand other disallowed materials which may advantage them unfairly. Students may not communicate with otherstudents during exams. All questions are to be directed to the supervising teacher/s.Homework and Study``Homework can take many forms, including practice homework, preparation homework, private study andassignment work.``Students who consistently do homework achieve better than students who do not do homework.``Revision of class work, both daily and over an extended period, is enormously beneficial to students inretaining knowledge.``Students who neglect homework may be putting themselves “at risk” in the struggle to remain competitivein the quest for their best possible academic results to secure a better option for their future. The students’main focus, whilst being students at St Mary’s, should be their schoolwork.``Part-time work commitments may affect academic performance if weekly study time is reduced as aconsequence. Students are strongly advised not to undertake more than 8 hours part-time work per weekand to avoid late night shifts.Years 5-7 Homework PolicyThe staff of St Mary’s College Years 5-7 greatly believe in the benefits of homework. These benefits include:`ìmproved retention of factual knowledge;`ìmproved problem solving skills;`ìncreased understanding of the curriculum;`ìmproved organisation, study habits and skills;`ìmproved attitude towards school;`ìmproved self-discipline and independence; and``greater desire to gain knowledge.The amount of homework to be completed varies between classes and the curriculum being covered at aparticular time. Students are required to record their homework tasks in their school diaries and the completedhomework will be corrected at various times throughout the week. Parents are encouraged to discuss their son’shomework with them to assist them with their learning and have a greater understanding of their progress.Guidelines for homework timeframes are:``Year 5: 30 minutes each night;``Year 6: 45 minutes each night; and``Year 7: 45 minutes – 1 hour each night.Providing quality Catholic education for boys since 189939
College Policies and ProceduresAssignments that reflect the curriculum being covered are set at various times throughout the year. The studentshave a clear understanding of the assignment requirements and due dates through the thorough criteria sheetsprovided by the classroom teacher. Parents are once again encouraged to discuss their son’s assignment workwith them.Years 5-7 Bookwork PresentationNeat and uniform presentation of bookwork throughout the Year 5-7 is expected at St Mary’s. The studentsin each class must follow the listed expectations:`Àll books are to be suitably covered and clearly labelled with name, class and subject. The class teacherwill identify the books to be used for each subject.`Èach student’s books are to be kept neat and tidy. There is to be no graffiti in or on their books.`Àll books except Mathematics books are to have 2cm margins written with a red biro and ruler. Mathematicsbooks are to have 2 equal columns ruled with a red biro and ruler.`Àll work is to be dated in the margins and ruled off with a red biro after the work is completed. Mathematicsbooks can be dated at the beginning of a new piece of work and also ruled off with a red biro when completed.``Where required, headings will be centred an underlined in red biro.``Textas or felt tip pens can only be used on worksheets that are neatly trimmed and glued into pads or placedinto folders. They are not to be used directly on to pages in workbooks.``Year 5 and 6 students use lead pencils for all bookwork and red biros for correcting and ruling.``Year 7 students may use blue biros when a pen license is gained. Red biros are used for correcting and ruling.``Students are to use erasers for pencil or ruled out if work is written in biro. Liquid paper, liquid pens orcorrecting tape are not to be used at the College.`Àll writing is to be written using Queensland Modern Cursive (joined letters) which is practised at school.Assignment PolicyAt St Mary’s College, the classroom teacher offers support to students during the school term with regards toset tasks and assignment work.The classroom teacher sets aside some Students should not be given unfair advantage by being given extratime to do research (on computers or using library resources) or the assignment tasks and constantly remindsstudents of the time-line leading to the due date, besides given extra assistance when requested.40 St Mary's College Toowoomba
