Monday 20 October 2008Panel 1 «The Digital Revolution: towards more rightssegmentation and the proliferation of formats»Monday 20 October, 16:15-17:45Auditorium Camille BlancModerator:Philippe Bailly, President, NPA ConseilQuestions we asked Francis Merlin,New Technologies SPORTEL AdvisorCan you remind us of the new audiovisual technologiesthat might have an impact on the sports rights market? The new technologies are Digital Terrestrial Television,Personal Mobile Television, high-speed internet connections,3G mobile telephone services and HD television. What do sports viewers gain from these newtechnologies? The functional advantages of the new technologies are thatthey offer access to more TV sports channels, mobile TVsports content and Video on Demand services, as well as highdefinitionTV sports images.Apart from these services, how can new technologiesincrease audience figures for TV sports programmes? Here are a few examples of what the new technologies offer:- The ability to make TV sports content available to areas whichpreviously had no access to this content.- The chance to broadcast coverage of sports which werepreviously under-represented by major TV channels.- The ability to broadcast TV sports images which maycomplement the offer of analogue channels (in countries wherethere is no coverage of the event).- Access to pre-recorded and slightly delayed events, downloads and VOD.- The ability to broadcast more national sports events in othercountries.- Access to the viewer’s choice of discipline in multi-sportsevents, or to the viewer’s choice of match in a tennis tournament, for example.Speakers:Jean-Louis Dutaret, President Canal+ Eventsand Acquisitions & Events Director, Sports, Canal+Mathieu Ficot, Vice President Media Rights, SportfivePhilippe Levrier, President, France Télé NumériqueCiaran Quinn, International Media & Sport Business ProfessionalRussell Wolff, Executive Vice President, ESPN InternationalWhat might the effects of new technologies be on thesports rights holders?Because of the new technologies, rights holders have to puthighly sophisticated global strategies into place, which shouldnotably incorporate the following:- A considerable increase in the number of rights buyers.- The types of rights that can be transferred: live, pre-recorded,slightly delayed, VOD …- Sales based on packages, area and operator for each type ofmedia (standard channels and new technologies).- Multi-broadcasting: the same TV operator broadcasting overseveral networks (standard channels, internet, 3G, PersonalMobile Television).- Improved sports broadcasting across the new media, both financially and in terms of audience figures and sports’notoriety. What might the effects of new technologies be on rightsbuyers? We should make a distinction between standard operatorswho also broadcast their channels on new media platforms, and as a result have sports rights experience, andnewcomers who are and will be increasingly numerous. In effect, all sports rights buyers must be aware of thecomplex nature of the transfer of rights, and of increasedcompetition in the purchase of these rights. A problem facingnewcomers is also how to meet with these rights holders, and Sportel is increasing its efforts in this area, striving todraw newcomers to the event.d’exploitation multi-supports d’un événement sportif.

Tuesday 21 October, 15:00-15:45Salle GenevoixPresentationby LFP:«Ligue 1:A New Vision onMarketing andMedia Issues»Since the beginning of thisseason, the LFP is producingthe games of the Ligue 1Championship.A specific organization hasbeen set up to enable thedelivery of the various signalsneeded for audiovisual rightsexploitation.

NicknamedBlade Runner due to his two carbonfibre transtibial artificial limbs, OscarPistorius, a double leg amputee is closeto his objective, that of lining up on thetrack at the World Championships inAthletics which take place in Berlin inAugust 2009. Meanwhile, the SouthAfrican star has just fulfilled one ofhis dreams at the recent ParalympicGames, totally dominating the sprintingevents to win three gold medals, in the100m, the 200m and the 400m. Bornwithout fibula bones and amputatedat eleven months old, Oscar Pistoriusis an iconic figure of the ParalympicGames and South African sport.`You are one of the biggest stars ofthe recent Games. Do you agree thatParalympic should be scheduled ata very close date of the Olympics,in order to be one of the big party, take advantage of the media andincrease broadcasting worldwide?I think that the paralympics is situatedin the right time inconjunction with theolympics. It is usually held 2 weeksafter the olympics and this allows theinternational media the opportunity tostay motivated to give the paralympicsthe recognition that it deserves. The South African rugby team is oneof the best worldwide. With yourperformances and the organisationof the 2010 FIFA World Cup, yourcountry is once again under thesports spotlight. Do you believethis will contribute to a growingdevelopment of sport ?Most definetly. South Africa has alwaysbeen known for its involvement andlove of sport and with 2010 around thecorner, much has been invested intothe developement in not only soccerbut all main stream sports in the pastcouple of years.
