Professional DevelopmentFriday, February 1 Friday, February 1Professional Development8:00 – 8:45 am Dancing the Music: Nashville Room, MarriottA Methodology for the Development of Expressivity in ConductingExpressivity in conducting is a concept that is desired and lauded though its development is both mysterious and elusive. As performers, conductors have much in common with both the dance and theatre arts. Through the study and application of Laban MovementTheory and Mime, conductors can develop a methodology for the creation and development of expressive gestures that will both expeditethe rehearsal process and result in more musical performances.Dr. John OelrichDirector of BandsUniversity of Tennessee Martin2:00 – 2:45 Se. A The Middle School Jazz Combo: Nashville Room, MarriottWhat, How, When and Why it’s Beneficial for Your Students and ProgramAs one of America’s only original art forms, Jazz is a fundamental part of all music curricula. The cultivation of Jazz’s inherent skill set -improvisation, communication, and interaction - can greatly benefit the individual student musician as well as pay long term dividendsfor all facets of the school band program.Dr. John OelrichDirector of BandsUniversity of Tennessee Martin8:50 – 9:35 Se. A Preparing for College: Nashville Room, MarriottAdvice for Future College Trumpet StudentsI recently wrote an article for the Instrumentalist Magazine (September 2012) that focused on common weaknesses in the playing offreshmen trumpet majors. I maintain that observing a daily routine of fundamentals is vital to identify and targetweaknesses.Dr. Anthony B. Mr. Marchese will show you how tocreate a virtual class, enroll students, and get started.Larry MarcheseMake Music Inc.9:40 – 11:10 Conducting Outside of the Pattern: Ballroom C, Cannon CenterTechniques and Strategies to “Look” More Like the MusicRegardless of any ensembles’ playing ability, it is important for conductors to visually support the artistic nuances contained within themusic performed. Doing so not only enhances the musical experience but is also an essential part of the communication between theconductor and the ensemble. Utilizing the Holst Suite in E Flat, this clinic will address basic strategies to help free conductors “from thepattern” and assist in the creative development of more musically informed and communicative gestures.Se. B How to Address the Common WeaknessesFound in the Developing High School Clarinet StudentChattanooga Room, MarriottRobyn will identify the common problems that many high school clarinet students struggle with, such as lack of dynamic control, incorrect tongue position, collapsed knuckles, and inability to utilize the pinky keys properly. She will present simple and efficient waysof working on these problems with the student, and provide short exercises that focus on each problem.
