After arriving at Conley Terminal in South Boston fromJapan, the unit was shipped to Avon, where it was preassembled.Last Friday, the 115kV gas insulated switchgearwas crane-lifted into a space the size of a large garage withnewly-reinforced sub-flooring and cement piers to bear itsweight. The space behind the transformerwhere the circuit-breaker is installed wasonly made accessible by demolishing an exterior wall onto Scotia Street, where a newsteel, roll-up door will replaced the cinder block wall. After a fire at the substation last March, Tim Revellese, director of planning, scheduling and contractor services, and Charlie Reardon had a challenge: removingthe damaged transformer while reinstalling a new one in a severely cramped space. In a heroic, 8-week effort with up to 90 workers on a single shift, the work wasaccomplished in record time. The installation of the new unit is more orderly, but justas important. The circuit breakers will allow for remote switching, an essentialcomponent for redundancy.Making the Most of NSTAR’s WalkWhen you support Boston Children's Hospital, you're supporting carefor sick children and helping to fund programs and research thatmake them better.
