Katherine A. DunleavyPresident and CEOMary Black FoundationKatherine A. Dunleavy is thepresident and CEO of the MaryBlack Foundation, a health legacyfoundation whose funds target thehealth and wellness of the citizensof Spartanburg County. The MaryBlack Foundation has two majorfocus areas: active living andhealthy eating and early childhooddevelopment.Ms. Dunleavy received a Bachelor of Science inbusiness administration from the University ofFlorida. She began her career at First Federal/BB&Twhere she rose from mortgage loan officer to seniorvice president of retail banking. Following herbanking career, Ms. Dunleavy spent a year as executivedirector of the Walker Foundation for the SouthCarolina School for the Deaf and the Blind beforebecoming CEO of United Way of the Piedmont.Ms. Dunleavy serves on the boards of numerousinstitutions and organizations, including SpartanburgRegional Healthcare System, Carolina CountryClub, Converse College Board of Visitors and theBB&T Advisory Board. In addition, she served onthe Spartanburg County Commission for HigherEducation for USC Upstate and is a former member ofthe Rotary Club of Spartanburg. She has participatedin both Leadership Spartanburg and LeadershipSouth Carolina.Ms. Dunleavy has received numerous awards overthe years, including the Neville HolcombeDistinguished Citizenship Award from theSpartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the SouthCarolina Woman of Accomplishment Award fromthe Spartanburg Business & Professional Women’sClub, the Al Willis Award from the SpartanburgDevelopment Association, the Order of the Palmettopresented by Governor Nikki Haley, the MaryMildred Sullivan Award from Converse College andHumanitarian of the Year from the Urban League ofthe Upstate.6

HISTORY OF THEUNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPSTATEThe history of USC Upstate is a chronicle of remarkabledevelopment. USC Upstate was established primarily to averta serious health care problem when Spartanburg GeneralHospital announced it was phasing out its diploma programfor registered nurses. A citizens’ committee investigated thesituation and ultimately requested that Spartanburg be includedin the University of South Carolina system. The SpartanburgRegional Campus, as it was first known, opened its doors in thefall of 1967 to 177 students on the first floor of the SpartanburgGeneral Hospital nursing residence. Enrollment continued toincrease, which resulted in the school becoming a four-yearuniversity in 1975.Now in its 45th year, the University continues striving toward itsvision to become one of the Southeast’s leading “metropolitan”universities ... a university which acknowledges as its fundamentalreason for being its relationship to its surrounding cities, theirconnecting corridors and expanding populations. It aims to berecognized nationally among its peer metropolitan institutions forits excellence in education and commitment to its students, forits involvement in the Upstate, for its operational and managerialeffectiveness, for its civility and common purpose and for theclarity and integrity of its mission.The University was known as USC Spartanburg until July 1, 2004,when its name was changed to USC Upstate to better reflect itsfulfillment of a metropolitan mission.nursing and teacher education, and master’s degrees in education.Among the fastest growing universities in South Carolina, USCUpstate is a diverse and dynamic community of 5,500 studentsfrom across the Upstate, 36 states and 51 countries.Today’s thriving campus, which includes 330 acres, newroadways, an athletic complex, residential housing for 1,000, anenrollment of 5,500 students, a minority enrollment exceeding30 percent and a Health Education Complex is much differentfrom its early, rather humble beginnings. TheGeorge Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economicsin downtown Spartanburg opened in May 2010 and is home tonearly 850 students.The USC Upstate Spartans now compete on the NCAADivision I level as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.The Spartans field 17 varsity sports – basketball, soccer, tennis,golf, cross country, and track and field for both women and men;baseball for men; and softball and volleyball for women.More than 20,500 students have earned their degrees from USCUpstate and are now representing the University as alumni.Nearly 85 percent of our alumni choose to remain in the Upstateto build their lives and careers, making a significant impact onthe region’s economy and quality of life.USC Upstate has experienced phenomenal growth in the past 45years.
