meets Upstate and Upstate meets the world. >>>

And the ensuing relationships and powerful partnerships between thesecommunities and our campus is a fundamental part of the USC Upstate story. It is one reasonwhy our students graduate to successful careers and inspiring lives… both at home and abroad. This is the story of a university that is Upstate inMaps © Rand McNally, R.L. 09-S-90

mind and at heart, but global in its outlook. >>>

This is the story of an extraordinary community of learners whoare fearless about their dreams but smart about their goals, ambitious about theirindividual progress yet passionate about serving others. Of scholars who are athome at Upstate but curious about the world... and dedicated to understandingtheir place in it. Of business professionals who enjoy competing against each otherbut refuse to compete at the expense of another. Of scientists and artists, teachersand caregivers, who care as much about making a difference as they do about theircareers. Of best friends, and roommates, and teammates, who love to have fun butremain deeply grounded in the values of the Upstate. Of future leaders who arepassionate about their talents but down-to-earth about their achievements. It’s a true story. It’s an inspiring story. Will it be your story?

The USC Upstate story is thestory of a university that’s oneof the fastest-growing in SouthCarolina and one that hasbeen ranked among the topfive “Comprehensive Collegesin the South” by U.S. News &World Report.Student-faculty collaboration is an integral part of a USC Upstate education.Shown here, are Dr. David Ferris, Associate Professor of Biology, and KatiePruiksma, a Pre-Occupational Therapy major, collaborating on an anatomyproject within one of the numerous high-tech science facilities on ourSpartanburg campus.

The pursuit of happinessJaquawna Terry’s quest for happiness in the Honors ProgramMost success stories are born in the same place. In the mind. And that’s whereyou will begin your own USC Upstate story. By choosing one or two of more than40 outstanding majors to pursue. By getting involved in original scholarship andresearch initiatives through our Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship.By taking advantage of our National Competitive Scholarship Program to competefor such renowned national and international scholarships as the Rhodes or theFulbright. Because to be a USC Upstate student is to constantly challenge your mindto expand, and broaden, and stretch in new, often unexpected, directions. There were two things Jaquawna Terryknew about herself before arriving at USCUpstate—that she was very smart and veryshy. “I wanted a school that was big yet smallenough for a small-town girl, an inspiring IvyLeague quality education without the Ivy Leagueenvironment,” says the English major (andrecipient of a USC Upstate Junior Scholarship)from Walterboro, South Carolina. “USC Upstatewas the perfect fit. The Honors Program, forexample, is challenging but supportive andfriendly. My classes have only had between fourand 15 people, but the experiences have beenhuge. And the professors constantly look out foryou. Like Dr. McConnell. I haven’t even taken acourse with him yet, but he’s always there for meno matter what time I call, or text, or e-mail. Heeven helped me find an internship, recently, toprepare for law school.”“I still remember my first day here,” recallsJaquawna, whose current responsibilitiesinclude being a peer leader, a student tutoras well as an active member of the CampusActivities Board and the Gospel Choir. “It wasonly 8:00 a.m. but everyone was just so happy. Iguess now, I’m one of the happy people.”Academic excellence lies at the heart of theUSC Upstate story. Our business program, for example, is one of only five percent ofbusiness programs worldwide to be accreditedby AACSB International—the Association toAdvance Collegiate Schools of Business. Oureducation program is one of only 28 percentof all education programs in the nation tobe accredited by the National Council forAccreditation of Teacher Education. And we arehome to one of the region’s most acclaimed, most technology-driven nursing schools.A USC Upstate education feels small, personal, andintimate. But—from traditional programs in the artsand sciences to innovative ones in such emergingfields as informatics; from programs in business, nursing, and education to pre-professional programsin such fields as engineering, medicine, and law—itcomes packed with big opportunities. And the strongfoundation in the liberal arts you develop here willgive you the intellectual and professional flexibilityand inspiration you need to adapt, evolve, andsucceed in a constantly changing world.JCBE Campus

Our Honors Program offers studentsan array of outstanding opportunitiesthat include honors advising, researchand service opportunities, field tripsand study abroad experiences, accessto exceptional faculty scholars, facultyresearch symposia, and visitingspeakers, as well as membership to theUSC Upstate chapter of the prestigiousPhi Kappa Phi honors society.“A USC Upstate education, and the Honors Program inparticular, is about so muchmore than earning a degree. It’s about the joy of holding bigideas up to the light, turningthem around, and seeing howthey reflect the world. It’s aboutopportunities that inspire you—to work on Capitol Hill throughthe Washington SemesterProgram, to study abroad, toserve communities across theUpstate. It’s about showing theworld that you are willing to goabove and beyond.”Dr. Thomas J. McConnell/Associate Professor of English/Director of the Honors Program

A good beginning is one thing. Butunderstanding what your story isreally about? That takes courage andconfidence, intellectual muscle andprofessional commitment. It takesan education that not only lets youexplore the “givens” of academicthinking but also inspires you tochallenge the boundaries betweenthe classroom and the world beyond. It takes USC Upstate. Here, you willinteract extensively with real-worldprofessionals in your field, use realworldtechnologies and strategies oncampus, and benefit from invaluableinternship, study abroad, andservice experiences. And throughit all, you will assess, evaluate, androad test your ideas to find out howfar they can take you.Real-worldinspirationNykia Henderson’s beyond-the-classroom experience

“I was in 9th grade when I visited anautopsy laboratory as part of a field trip,”says Nykia Henderson, a native ofSpartanburg, remembering the beyondthe-classroomexperience that allowedher to find her calling in life. “That wasthe moment when I decided to be a nurse. And USC Upstate has been an amazingexperience. The curriculum is extremelychallenging, but the class sizes are smalland the teachers know your name by thesecond week. And, of course, we have thebest, most well-connected, most high-technursing program in the region. You’ll findUSC Upstate graduates and students atalmost every hospital in the region.”She thoroughly enjoys working within thestate-of-the-art facilities of the Mary BlackSchool of Nursing. But not surprisingly thebest part of her USC Upstate story, saysNykia, has been her incredible “beyondthe-classroom”learning experiences. “I’minvolved in many different student clubson campus, and I’ve made friends fromaround the world. But what I’ve lovedmost are the off-campus experiences. Andit’s not just my internships. I’ve traveledto Florida to work on three differentservice projects. I’ve volunteered at a foodbank in Atlanta through our communityservice organization, IMPACT. I’ve foundinspiration from so many different sources.”““I was a scared freshman,so I wanted a smallcommunity. I liked theUpstate too much to leavebut didn’t want to miss outon a big college experienceeither. USC Upstate wasperfect. It’s opened myeyes, made me view theworld in a whole differentway, and really forced meto think about what myfuture should look like.”“Nykia Henderson/ Nursing/Spartanburg, South CarolinaServe others in local soup kitchens. Throw away all your stereotypes about ivory towers and inaccessible professors. AtUSC Upstate, you will learn from thinkers, scholars, scientists and artists who areas deeply connected with the real world as they are with you. With the majority ofour full-time faculty having earned the highest degrees in their fields (from suchinstitutions as Harvard, Duke, Cornell and Northwestern, among others), they areleaders on top of their game who will challenge you in every class. But they are alsothe kind of teachers who will get you to speak your mind, inspire you, cheer you on,and work alongside you at every stage as your USC Upstate story unfolds.CheerleadersextraordinaireWhether it is as the Director of Theatre,Chair of Fine Arts & CommunicationStudies, or the Director of the ForeignStudy London Program, or simplyas someone who is passionate abouttheatre, music and the arts, Jimm Coxhas inspired hundreds of USC Upstatestudents. As a first generation collegestudent himself, he has first-handknowledge of the value of teachers whoserve as mentors, guides, philosophersand friends to their students. “I grewup in a family which was poorer thandirt,” says Professor Cox. “My familysacrificed everything to give me aneducation. And I learned early thateducation is a gift that can never betaken away from you. It not onlychanges the quality of your own lifeimmeasurably, but also empowers youto change the quality of lives of others.”“What sets USC Upstate apartis that, at its core, it remainsa teaching institution. We doresearch. We publish. But I thinkwhat our faculty share in commonis a passion for teaching. For mostof us, the classroom is a cheerful, celebratory place—a place full oflaughter and joy. Because whenwe stop celebrating what we learn, there’s really no reason to keeplearning.”A faculty composed of leaders in their fields… to cheer you on

Inspiration is hard to ignore when you come face-tofacewith it every day. With an average class size of25–30 students, and a student-faculty ratio of18 to 1, your USC Upstate story will be fundamentallyshaped by your inspiring, continuous, one-on-oneinteractions with professors and classmates.“USC Upstate allows me to balance myefforts in both teaching and research,” saysAssociate Professor of Computer Scienceand Director of Research Support,Dr. Sebastian van Delden. In additionto mentoring them in the classroom, Dr.van Delden routinely opens up excitingnew possibilities for USC Upstate studentsthrough his research into visual and voiceguided robotic systems, a field in whichhe has published numerous works. “It’sexciting to see such a steady increase inresearch initiatives across our campus,” heexplains. “We’ve helped fund 30 differentprojects this academic year alone, manyof which included undergraduate researchassistants. I, myself, have had manystudents work with me in the robotics laband co-author articles for peer-reviewedconferences and publications.”Dr. van Delden has also been instrumentalin organizing summer roboticscamps that open up the cutting-edgeUSC Upstate Robotics Lab to youngchildren. “They are a lot of fun,” hesays. “We’ve had ten-year-oldsoperating and programming ourStäubli robotic arms. The Upstateand the country as a whole needsmore kids interested in science andtechnology, and these are the kindsof experiences that can spark theirpassion from an early age.”Our faculty members inspire USC Upstate students bothwithin and beyond the classroom. Last year, for example, faculty across our campus engaged more than 1,500students in contributing approximately 18,000 hours ofservice, impacting the lives of more than 8,000 children, among others.

USC Upstate is as much a story about a dynamic, rapidly evolvingcampus ideally poised to meet the demands of higher educationin the new millennium as it is about a community that inspiresand empowers you to meet the challenges of careers, lives andleadership in the new century. As a student here, your story will beimpacted in fundamental ways by a campus undergoing dramatictransformation, thanks to an unprecedented and comprehensive10-year, $131 million master plan.
