Using theinformationin this bookWhat wehaven’t coveredin this bookHow you use the information in this book is entirely up to you. Ifyou want to be involved in making decisions about your pregnancy, labour and birth, this information will support you to do so. If youdon’t want to be involved in decision-making, this information mayhelp you to know what to expect during your maternity care. The list of studies we refer to in this book can be found in theonline versions of each decision aid (www.havingababy.org.au).In time, the technical reports for the development of each of thedecision aids in the book will also be available online. Technicalreports are a record of the decisions the researchers made whenconsidering which studies to include and exclude in each of thedecision aids.We are aware the information in this book is only the ‘tip of theiceberg’ when it comes to information about your maternity care.Unfortunately there are lots of topics we haven’t been able to cover, that women said they wanted more information about. For example, women told us they wanted clear, consistent and trustworthyinformation about immunisation, postnatal depression, sleeping andsettling newborns, breastfeeding, stillborn babies and miscarriage. We have done our best to put topics into this book that women havesaid were most important. In time, our website will be able to provideyou with more clear, consistent and trustworthy information aboutmaternity care.Studies can’t say for sure what would happen if you choose oneoption or another. However, the results of studies might give youan idea of the possible outcomes of each option. The studies weuse in this book give you the best possible estimates of how likelydifferent things are to happen. In the decision aids in this book, we talk a lot about the chance ofdifferent things happening. To put the numbers we have includedinto some context, it might be useful to know that each year inAustralia:»»5 out of every 1000 people are injured in a car accident»»2 out of every 100 people have vomiting or diarrhoea fromfood poisoning»»30 out of every 100 people catch a cold or flu»»45 out of every 100 people get sunburntThe information in this book can be used with Queensland Health’sPregnancy Health Record (pictured right). You might like to ask yourcare provider about this record.5
