NEWSCHECK SEAT BELTSKlippan Safety is urging workshops to check and change seatbelts to ensure thesafety of customers, particularly in older cars. The company, which provides <strong>AM</strong> seatbelts made to OE standards, says seatbeltsare readily available in the aftermarket toreplace worn belts.Seatbelts are generally over looked inservicing and maintenance, when theyshould be checked regularly.Klippan advises the belts should bechanged if they have damaged, faded orstretched webbing, if the webbing does notlock when it is pulled out suddenly or if itdoes not fully retract. The belts should also be changed ifthere is any visual damage or corrosion, ifthe pretensioner buckle sits lower than itshould or if the seatbelt has been used inan accident.A cut in a seat belt only five millimetres long will reduce thestrength by half and cause it to fail.Worn or faded seatbelt webbing is theprimary causes for failure of seatbelts, according to Klippan. The flexible webbing material isdesigned for safety, comfort and protectionin only one accident and does wear out. Many fatalities and serious injuries arethe result of seatbelts failing when the beltis critically loaded because they fail to holdthe occupant; however the situation iscompletely avoidable by replacing the oldbelts.Klippan advises that seatbelts invehicles more than 20 years old will notpass the <strong>Australian</strong> Standard for seat belts. The webbing is a polyester material thatis affected by UV light, and that lightdegrades the strength of the webbing. All seatbelts should be checked forfaded by retracting the seatbelt andcomparing the colour difference betweenthe UV exposed and unexposed webbing. If there is a noticeable difference, theseatbelt needs to be replaced.Worn webbing is also a major contributorto a failed seatbelt.A five millimetre long cut in the seatbeltwill reduce the strength by halfand cause the seatbelt to fail.As the age of the beltsincrease, the number of smallerareas of damage increase.Thesenumerousimperfections result in anoverall loss of strength andfailure of the seatbelt.Klippan Safety productshave a range of seat belts to most new andolder vehicles, and are used for the<strong>Australian</strong> automotive aftermarket, truck, and bus industries and exported around theworld. These are accessible through most autostores in kit form, with fitting accessoriesand detailed instructions included to makethe replacement process a much simplerand easier task.ASA ACQUIRES 3PLASA Logistics acquired 100 percent control of Melbourne based 3PL, SupplyChain Management on July 1.The combined organisation nowsupports an integrated logistics offeringfrom the factory gate at overseasmanufacturing points through to the enduser.ASA Logistics Chief Executive OfficerSandra Fairchild said the integratedoperation would provide flow-on benefitsto customers.“The integrated capability of ASALogistics and SCM creates an integratedsupply chain capability to help ourcustomers run successful businesses,”she said.“Our focus is on customer service, value for money and strong understandingof our clients business and logisticsneeds."ASA Logistics now boasts over 40,000square metres of warehousing capabilitywith operations in Melbourne, Sydney,Brisbane and Hong Kong.GOLDBATTERYWARRANTYThe SuperCharge Battery Company’smove to introduce a three yearwarranty for their ‘Gold’ battery tookthe market by complete surpriseback in May 2005.Such was the confidence in thequality and longevity of these batteriesthat SuperCharge took the market leadin introducing a new benchmark in the<strong>Australian</strong> market. Now three years on, the company iscelebrating the anniversary of thisinitiative with one of the lowest claimrate in the industry, and with bothcustomers and end users delighted thattheir purchases continue to perform withreliability. The performance of the SuperChargebrand has not gone unnoticed by leadingEuropean marquees such as Alfa Romeo,Fiat, Citroen and Renault, who allendorse the leading maintenance-freebattery.SuperCharge Australia’s SeniorOperations Manager Russell Marquezsaid the Maintenance-Free batteriesmean there is no need to top up theelectrolyte and acid cannot spill.“Our batteries are safe and easy tohandle, and statistics show they lastlonger and have extra power with a highCCA rating,” he said.“We are excited at the success of thethree year warranty.”SuperCharge batteries are soldthroughout Australia by leading tyre andaccessory outlets, battery specialists, auto electrical and general mechanicalworkshops.AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 13

PRODUCTSSolid, flexible bushingsThe use of polyurethane in automotive suspension bushings datesback to the early 1970s when race car enthusiasts looked forimproved handling and suspension performance without having toresort to solid pivot points and connections.Traditionally, polyurethane bushings and mounts were madefrom very hard urethane compounds exceeding 100 on thedurometer scale, where rubber was much softer and measuredless than 58 on the durometer scale. The main reason for the extreme hardness was the use oflow grade polyurethanes. In order to achieve abrasion resistance, tearing andcompression set, the polyurethane needed to be very hard. The second reason for this hardness was how the componentwas designed and manufactured. While high performance polyurethanes were available theywere both very expensive and required complex machinery inorder to process, mix and cast the component.Few customers would pay for the added expense, especiallywhen the automotive performance aftermarket was sellingproducts at a third of the cost. After extensive development and testing of materials that wouldoffer strength and durability, geometry retention and memorywithout the harshness, Whiteline created a progressive, long-chainpolymer compound incorporating polyurethane constituents, whichdeliver the combined physical advantages of a solid bushing, withthe extreme flexibility characteristics of rubber. That range of product is known as Whiteline Plus anddelivers low speed ride quality, high speed chassis control.Whiteline Plus polyurethanes provide the softness needed forlow vibration, noise and harshness characteristics, while displayingextreme abrasion, tear and cut resistance, and near-zerocompression set at lower durometer reading of 70-80. In addition, these performance polyurethanes allowed the polymer chains to bebonded directly to the metal shell, which provided a method offlow control giving the bushing the characteristics of soft ride whileon smooth roads, and when under cornering pressure caused thebushing to become firmer for improved suspension performance.Whiteline has engineered a range of products to cover thecommon passenger, commercial and 4x4 markets and willcontinue to grow the range to service new models and escalatingdemand. The range has long lasting durability and is resistant tochemicals, oils and weathering. It offers enhanced handling, steering response and roadholding stability, increased braking capacities and positive brakepedal ‘feel’.As a result of extensive domestic and export research,Whiteline identified that coloured bushings had a mixedreception, especially in motorsport and restoration markets. As a result, the range is made in a translucent black colour. The Whiteline Plus – Chassis Control (edition 1.1) catalogueis now available from the website www.whitelineplus.com.au ina PDF format. For further information about the Whiteline Plus range, stockists and or general information, call 1300 882 355or email sales@whiteline.com.auAU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 31

PRODUCTSKCI EzyWrenchThere seems to be no end to the stories of people finding wheelnuts on vehicles impossible to loosen. This is especiallyso if the wheel nutshave beentightened with apneumatic garagewrench or havenot been undonefor a long time, inwhich case theymay be rusted orjust incredibly tight. You get the longpiece of pipe ontoyour wheel brace orsocket bar and jumpup and down on itand all that happensis you bend the bar orslip and hurt yourself. This procedurealone may require a lotof strength which somepeople may not haveand may strain the back, arms or wrists.Be back on the road quickly and easilywith a KCI EzyWrench.Wheel nuts should be tightened to manufacturers’ torquesettings, but this rarely happens. Most garage rattle-guns exceed these torque settings andover-tighten the wheel nuts, and they only get tighter or rustedon with time.If you are in a remote area or have to wait a long time forroad service, you could find yourself in a hazardous situation,or just waiting a long time for assistance. The KCI EzyWrench solves these problems. It produces a maximum torque of 340Nm (250ft/lbs) whichis equivalent to an average garage rattle gun, but delivers it ina true impacting action and can loosen and tighten the moststubborn, over-tightened or rusted wheel nuts in seconds withits unique operation.Using 100watts (8.3A), it simply plugs into a vehicle’scigarette lighter and it has a two year warranty. The complete kit includes four sockets, an adaptor forconnecting direct to the battery, a spare fuse, three inchextension bar and a tough lightweight plastic case.Included is a bonus four metre extension cable that doublesthe reach of the EzyWrench to eight metres. This allows users to reach caravan and trailer wheels andwith standard cigarette lighter connections at each end andan in-built fuse, it is also useful for other applications. The KCI EzyWrench has been rigorously tested by 4X4Monthly/NSW NRMA Road Service and is used in their roadservice vehicles.See more detail about this product at www.kcimports.com.auor call 02 6649 3638 for stockists.AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 33

PRODUCTSContinental control unitDespite a certain degree of market saturation in North America, WesternEurope and Japan, the worldwide car production will continue to increase –from 63 million in 2005 to a forecasted 74 million in 2013.The four major emerging countries ofBrazil, China, India and Russia is expectedto increase their share of the global carproduction from 14 percent at present to20 percent in 2013.In these and other emerging markets,low-cost cars with few extra features andsimple electric and electronic functions willexperience high growth rates. The scope of their electronicscorresponds roughly to that of a Europeanmid-range vehicle some 15 years ago.Typical body electronic functions todayare for instance power windows with antipinchprotection, ultrasonic parking assistsystems, light management, remote controlfor central locking, immobilizer orwindscreen wipers.Control devices for these bodyelectronics functions need to be highlyflexible and scalable. On the one hand, the car makers andtheir suppliers must react very quickly tothe changing needs. On the other hand, the equipmentfeatures of low-cost cars depend on therespective market demands and differconsiderably, depending on the exportcountry. And there is also the increasing pressureon costs. In response to these needs,Continental’s Interior division engineers atthe Shanghai location have developed anew control unit especially for the marketsin the emerging countries: the BasicFunction Controller. It replaces the individual relayspreviously required for functions such asblinker or wiper intervals. The Basic Function Controller will beused for the first time in standardproduction at the end of 2008 by theChinese car maker Geely.Other production start-ups at furtherAsian manufacturers are already in thepipeline. For cost reasons, only functions that arefound in at least 80 percent of low-costcars are integrated as software modules inthe Basic Function Controller.Functions that are low in demand areintegrated into the electronics architectureas independent components.Integration possibilities are alsoThe controlunit isgeared closelyto marketneeds andis costoptimised.provided in the software structure of thecontrol unit so that it can take on furtherfunctions at a later point in time. The hardware is designed based onsimilar principles. For instance, the system no longer hasany seldom used components. The control unit is geared closely tomarket needs and is cost optimised. The design of the Basic FunctionController always depends on theequipment features of the vehicle andautomaker's specifications.Continental and each car manufacturerwork together to generate a customisedcontrol unit with precisely the standardisedfunctions and hardware componentsrequired. To change a standard function later, theentire component is replaced. The new component can contain a newversion of the standard function or also thestandard function expanded with furtherfunctions.Minor deviations in the functionrequirements are realised in the functioncomponents by modifying parameters. In this way, the vehicle is adaptedquickly for other export markets withdifferent requirements. To deal with especially challenging pricedemands in a local market, the range offunctions is reduced accordingly orfunctions are simplified compared to theirEuropean versions. In connection with other control devices(such as for the instrument cluster or theengine), the Basic Function Controllerallows for low-priced total solutions.Continental’s Basic Function Controller will be used for the first time instandard production at the end of 2008 by the Chinese car maker Geely.Continental says it makes nocompromises on the new Basic FunctionController. All software functions and hardwarecomponents comply with the corporation'sglobal quality guidelines.Continental guarantees a targeteddevelopment process by employing its ownengineers locally at all key customers andinvolving them early on in the process.Specialised teams with extensive expertiseare responsible for the entire productdevelopment directly in the new keymarkets. The engineers thus profit from theexpert knowledge that is available andnetworked within the company at the globallevel. This guarantees shorter channels, speedand as a rule, production readiness in lessthan 12 months. In general, Continental does not providecar manufacturers with products that arefully defined, especially in the interiorelectronics sector, but instead withextensive solutions including theintegration. On the Basic Function Controller, theuncompromisingly cost-optimised totalarchitecture was of top priority, wherebyflexibility, scalability, functionality, reliability and safety were not disregarded. With this strategy, Continental says itcan offer the best electronic concepts atthe best price and of the best quality in theemerging countries. For more information visit the PRODUCTSElectronic Rust Proofing SystemsCouplerTec electronic rust-proofing systems have evolved to become one of the world’s most effective and trusted means of electronically rust proofingany new or old vehicle. The company claims its electronic rustproofingsystems were the first trulyeffective electronic rust-proofing system toenter the <strong>Australian</strong> market back in 1996.Even though capacitive couplingtechnology was the only proven way toelectronically rust-proof a vehicle, there wasa very important need to advance thetechnology to what it is today.CouplerTec says its components thatdrive its current electronic rust-proofingsystems are nothing short of state of the art.The company claims that all of itssystems are fully computerised and are theworld’s first and only system that can boastof the special features and functions eachsystem has.CouplerTec’s electronic engineersrecognised that there were many problemsassociated with other electronic rustproofingsystems that were being sold tocustomers around Australia. Some of these electronic systems wereusing cathodic technology developed for themarine industry, which have aluminium ormagnesium anodes attached to thevehicle’s body.It is common knowledge that foran anode to be effective it must besubmerged in water, making itimpossible to be effective on amotor vehicle.Another type of device found onthe market is what is known asimpressed current technology. Theseelectronic rust-proofing devices donot have capacitive couplings (pads)or anodes; they simply have a wiregoing to the battery and another wiregoing straight to the vehicle’s bodyor earth.Again it is common knowledge that youcannot increase the vehicle’s negativepotential by simply putting a negativecharge to the body.If these devices did have an outputstrong enough to do this it would completelyupset the entire vehicle’s electrical system.CouplerTec’s original capacitive couplersystem models from 1996 had potentialproblems that needed to be addressed andthat was the reason for designing a newsystem that could be controlled with a minicomputer or micro-processor.The new state of the art componentswere introduced to all CouplerTec systemsin 2004.CouplerTec says this upgradedcomponent technology in its systems is aworld first and every system is completelyself-diagnostic and is virtually fail-safe.The original systems first introduced in1996 were effective in controllingIt is common knowledge that foran anode to be effective itmust be submerged in water, making it impossible to beeffective on a motor vehicle.corrosion, however CouplerTec engineersdiscovered that if the wire running to thecoupler (pad) became damaged by shortingout, it was possible that the system couldtotally short out and damage the internaltransformer. This would cause the system to fail andnot work at all. This major problem has been overcomeby CouplerTec these days, because if a shortshould occur the micro-processor will pick itup in milliseconds and shut the systemdown internally. When this happens, thegreen LED light will go out and the red LEDlight will flash continuously until the fault isrectified. This has two results, firstly the systemcan not put a positive charge to thevehicle’s body and secondly the short willnot damage the unit as it would have in thepast. The other major advantage CouplerTecsystems have is that the micro-processorwill also detect open pad or open circuit, meaning that if the coupling (pad) comesaway from the vehicle body or the wire tothe coupling becomes broken, the systemwill detect the problem and again turn offthe green LED and the red LED will pulseintermittently by flashing 10 times every 30seconds.This feature lets the vehicle’s ownerknow that there is a problem rather thanonly having half the system working when itis most required, such as driving along abeach.CouplerTec manufactures a system tosuit almost anything, from ranger hutdwellings on Fraser Island to 50-year-oldclassic cars. The company claims it is the preferredrust-proofing solution for the majority ofBMA coal mines in central Queensland overthe past eight years and has in excess of3500 BMA vehicles protected from thehighly corrosive sulphur in the coal.CouplerTec says it is endorsed by SurfLife Saving Australia wide and thatclubs praise the effectiveness ofCouplerTec electronic rust-proofingsystems.The company exports more than50,000 systems to Canada to combatcorrosion from the salted roads.Sym-Tech is one of Canada’slargest aftermarket companiessupplying 500 new car dealershipswith CouplerTec electronic rustproofingsystems.CouplerTec engineers arecontinuously monitoring the latestadvancements in componenttechnology through their ongoingresearch and development program, toensure that CouplerTec remain the marketleader’s world wide. The company also has an assembly plantthat has the capability to assemble andpack thousands of systems weekly, allcomplying with strict quality assurancechecks and standards.CouplerTec’s goal is to supply the highestquality product to the automotiveaftermarket industry at the lowest possibleprice without jeopardising quality. For more information about CouplerTecelectronic rust-proofing call 1800 068 088or visit the website www.couplertec.com.au.38 AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 www.aaaa.com.au

PRODUCTSTime to considerchanging to BMCThe core function of an air filter is to supplyclean air to the engine by reducing the amountof dirt that it ingests. While factory standard filters aresatisfactory, they are commonly made frompaper and sometimes foam simply becausethey are cheap to produce.Commonly, however, they tend to haveonly a short life span and allow for only alow airflow volume and basic filtration, which results in a loss of power and fueleconomy. The unique BMC Air Filter filteringelement traps even the minutest particlesensuring maximum protection from dirt anddust while allowing for maximum airflowand power gains with improved fuelconsumption. Changing to a BMC Air Filteris a simple, inexpensive and effectiveenhancement for any engine. In 1995, following a request from theFerrari Formula One team, BMC began tomanufacture its own specific brand of airfilters.BMC Air Filters are designed andmanufactured by Italian engineers to helpachieve a vehicles best performance interms of power and fuel efficiency whilealso providing superior filtration.Since 1996, BMC Air Filters haveequipped some of the most importantteams in F1 and American Le Mansincluding Ferrari, Toyota, BMW Williams,Prost, Sauber, Minardi, Porsche and Audi.In Australia, BMC Air Filters are used bya number of V8 Supercar teams including,Jim Beam Racing, Team Vodafone, HRT,Stone Brothers Racing, Team BOC and theHSV Dealer Team with fantastic results.Having established its reputation in thehighest and most prestigious competitionarena, BMC Air Filters startedmanufacturing high performance air filtersfor street cars, which are capable ofproducing the same fantastic results.Log onto www.linkauto.com.au to findout more information about BMC Air Filterproducts.Available from your local Autobarn orperformance workshop. EXHAUST SYSTEMSPACEMAKER SETS THE PACEOver the years leading header manufacturer, Pacemaker Headers, has chalked up many firsts in productdesign, technology and manufacturing but in addition to this it also prides itself in being able to keeppace with new part numbers for late model vehicles.Market demand governs R&D prioritieson the production schedule and thecompany keeps constantly in touch with itsdistributors to gauge the need forperformance exhausts for particular makesand models. In the performance exhaustfield late model Commodores and Falconsstill dominate the market and remain amajor focus for Pacemaker. For example, development of performance exhaustsystems for the newly released Ford Falconrange are already well under way and willbe released shortly. With the recent upward surge in fuelprices there is now an expanding marketfor motorists wishing toinstall aftermarketcomponents that havethe potential to improvefuel efficiencybesides boostingpower and whilstyou may need tospend a bit more timethan usual explaining the virtuesof installing a Pacemaker exhaustit relates to valuable extra incomein these tight economic times.Pacemaker has its own ceramiccoating division, Ceramic CoatAustralia, and most of its products areavailable with this advanced and durablecoating as an optional extra. Coupled withPacemaker's patented gas flow technologyPacemaker products have the edge over itscompetition in the performance and fueleconomy stakes.THE CLEAN AIR SPECIALISTSCateran has just released Race CatThis is a new ultra high performance, 100 cells per sq inch, metallic, round catalytic converter, with tapered ends. It has beenspecifically designed for racing vehicle applications. This product manufactured with the following features:• 1.5mm stainless steel body and ends for durability and strength;• metallic substrate is able to withstand extreme temperaturesand resist thermal and physical shock;• OEM-grade wash-coating for superior noxious gas conversion;• metallic substrate which is brazed to the outer shell for addeddurability;• tapered end cones for versatility (up to 76mm) and maximumgas flow;Besides being a long-time performanceheader manufacturer Pacemaker nowrecognises the need to produce a range ofWith the recent upward surge infuel prices there is now anexpanding market for motoristswishing to install aftermarketcomponents that have the potentialto improve fuel efficiency...complete systems to complement its rangeof popular headers and to provide addedpower and economy gains. But it didn't justwant to release another high-performanceexhaust system into the marketplace thatwas essentially the same as everybody else. And that's why Pacemaker developed itslatest and most important invention, the V-Tex merge-pipe, which is exclusive toPacemaker. FUEL FEATUREHIGH FUEL PRICES VERSUSDECLINING WORKSHOP PROFIT– PART ONEViewing the world from my desk as anautomotive service manager, I can’t help butwonder why the current crop of vehicle ownersare putting off servicing their vehicles whenfaced with the rising cost of fuel. After noticing this downturn in trade, starting at the end ofMarch this year after petrol prices had soared, I thought thatmaybe we had offended customers, our pricing structure waswrong, we hadn’t done enough advertising, in fact a whole listoff potential problems with the business had crossed my mind.None of these reasons however proved to be the cause of theproblem. After contacting several other respected workshops inmy area and discussing the phenomenon, I soon came to realisethat other workshops in my area were experiencing the sametrading trends. This revelation peaked my curiosity. I rang a number ofcolleagues in different states and asked the same question. Theyall gave me more or less the same answer. I rang a colleague inthe United States, he also said he had experienced a downturnin trade since the steep rise in fuel prices over there. Furtherinquiries to a manufacturer of exhaust gas acquisition unitsrevealed that the downturn was global. i.e. His internationalorders had diminished globally since the dramatic rise in theprice of oil.Was this to be the way the future? Declining patronagealong with declining profit margins doesn’t make for healthybottom lines. Finding a solution to the problem becameparamount. The solution was in fact, the very reason for the downturn. What one would expect to happen is that rising fuel pricesshould have forced vehicle owners to have their cars servicedmore regularly and of course kept in an excellent state of tuneto achieve higher fuel economy thus reducing the amount ofmoney spent on fuel.Unfortunately most vehicle owners these days don’tremember what cars used to be like in the 60s, 70s and 80sbefore the introduction of unleaded fuel. The tetraethyl leadused as an upper cylinder lubricant leaded fuel literallydestroyed spark plug electrodes, necessitating replacementevery 10,000 km or so. Taking your vehicle to a motor mechanicand having the engine tuned was a biannual event that everycar owner use to performed semi automatically. Once unleadedpetrol was introduced, the constant need to tune engines wasbasically eliminated. As vehicles evolved, sophisticated engine managementsystems, and electronically controlled automatic transmissionsbecame the norm on vehicles. Vehicle manufacturers convincedvehicle owners that regular maintenance and servicing were nolonger as important and service intervals were pushed back, insome cases up to three times longer between services. Themodern service policy is to keep the vehicle running withoutproblems up until the vehicle’s used by date.Modern vehicles are now so well made that they can takethis abuse however, by the time the vehicle reaches it’s used bydate the lack of servicing has taken its toll and both the engineand transmission are operating well below optimum capacityand repair or replacement is usually not a financially viableoption. Most vehicle manufacturers would like to sell you a newvehicle, not repair and maintain to the old one. It is easy to seethat current servicing trends are reflect on this ideology.A Change of DirectionTo change a negative into a positive, all was required was toask the client whether they would like their potential fueleconomy checked, free of charge, when the car was beingpresent service. Without exception, all customers petitionedreadily agreed to have their fuel economy checked. This onequestion presented the workshop with the opportunity to makequality and high profit repairs while the same time giving abenefit to the customer in the form of better fuel economy. How to go about it?Basically, the fuel economy of vehicle is not always thedomain of the engine. Faults in other systems on the vehicle canalso contribute to poor fuel economy. These systems andsubsystems can be divided into five key areas.First and foremost is the correct fuelling of the engine underthe appropriate load conditions.Secondly, the engine must be capable of extracting all theenergy available from the correct air fuel ratio. This means theengine must be in sound mechanical condition and using a58 AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 www.aaaa.com.au

FUEL FEATUREquality, clean, correct grade engine oiland of course the ignition system musthave sufficient reserve to meet andexceed all engine ignition demands.Thirdly, the power must be able to beput evenly to the road wheels withoutslippage. This means is a vehicle isequipped with an automatictransmission, the automatic transmissionfluid must be free from contaminationand that the correct viscosity. If it’s avehicle equipped with a manualtransmission; there must be no slippagefrom the clutch.Fourthly, there should be no bindingor dragging brakes.Lastly, the wheel alignment must besuch that the wheels on both axles areparallel to each other and each axle isperpendicular to the centre line of thevehicle.Engine fuellingAs you may have heard me speakmany times about the importance of thecorrect air fuel ratio, at no time could thisone measurement have more relevancethan at the present time of high world oilprices. You can only determine the correct airfuel ratio of engine with an exhaust gasanalyser, regardless of what anyone tellsyou. So-called air fuel ratio meters onlydetect the presence or lack of oxygen inthe exhaust gases stream, they do notmeasure the gases that give you the cluesas to how the engine is performing i.e.CO2, CO, HC and NOx.You must always remember however, that measuring the air/fuel ratio of anengine only determines whether or notthe correct amount of fuel was deliveredto the combustion chamber. It does notdetermine whether or not the fuel wasactually burned. As the prime function of the enginemanagement system is to provide thecorrect air/fuel ratio to the engine underall operating conditions, measuring theair/fuel ratio determines whether or notthe engine management system isfunctioning correctly. This also includesthe fuel pump and fuel pressureregulator. This test is further simplified by usingthe Lambda value instead of the words“air/fuel ratio”. Lambda 1.000 is the termWas this to be the way thefuture? Declining patronage alongwith declining profit margins doesn’tmake for healthy bottom lines.Finding a solution to the problembecame paramount.used by vehicle/engine manufacturers todefine the stoichiometric air/fuel massthe engine is using regardless of the fuelspecies being used. i.e. Petrol, LPG,Petrol/Ethanol, etc.All vehicles with spark ignited engines, registered for use on <strong>Australian</strong> roadsafter 1986 must conform to ADR 37,37Aand 37B as well as ADR 41 & ADR 79ADR 37 – Emission Control for LightVehicles: The intention of this <strong>Australian</strong>Design Rule is to limit 'Fuel EvaporativeEmissions' and 'Exhaust Emissions' frommotor vehicles in order to reduce airpollution, and to require new petrolfuelled motor vehicles to bemanufactured to operate on 'UnleadedPetrol'. ADR 41 – Mandatory Operationon Unleaded Petrol: The function of this<strong>Australian</strong> Design Rule is to requirevehicles to be manufactured to operateon 'Unleaded petrol' and have certainassociated features. ADR 79 – EmissionsControl for Light Vehicles: The functionof this <strong>Australian</strong> Design Rule is toprescribe exhaust and evaporativeemission requirements for light vehiclesin order to reduce air pollution. To meet these design rulespecifications, the onboard enginemanagement systems must maintain aLambda value of 1.000 under all engineoperating and load conditions other than“Wide Open Throttle” (WOT) when theLambda value may fall to an optimumengine torque producing value of 0.90.Any exhaust gas analyser that iscapable of accurately measuring anddisplaying Lambda values under allengine conditions i.e. Idling accelerating, cruising and decelerating can be used todetermine the integrity of the enginemanagement system for correct fueling.(NOTE: When determining the trueair/fuel ratio of an engine, it is essentialthat the exhaust system is gas tight fromthe cylinder head to the tail pipe foraccurate readings and that all secondaryair injection systems are disabled.)Next month we look at EngineCombustion Efficiency, Automatictransmissions, and Wheel alignment. For further information about thisarticle, please contact Rob Prudius atCoda Products Pty Ltd02 49622575 ext 11.AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 59

4WD4WD COUNCILELECTIONSThe 4WD Council is governed byan elected committee of ninerepresentatives and one appointeefrom the AAAA National Council. It is now election time and in accordwith the 4WD Council charter, fivecommittee members will retire.Nominations are open to any member ofthe 4WD Council, including retiringcommittee members. If 4WD is your industry sector, why notget involved with the body that is active onbehalf of that industry.Committee meetings are held about fourtimes a year and members are required toattend at least two of the ‘face to face’committee meetings and the 4WD Councilevents in their state.Committee meetings are generallyteleconferences, or held at major 4WDindustry shows. The Governing Committeedetermines the direction and advocacyissues pursued by the Council and hasfinancial oversight of Council activities.Secretariat services are provided byGrahame McCraw of AAAA.Your commitment as a committeemember is not arduous, but is significantfor your industry, because the 4WD Councilis 4WD people working for the 4WDindustry.Nomination forms will be distributedamong the AAAA membership during July.If you require one, call Kirsty on03 9561 7044.Candidates must be 4WD Councilmembers and can self nominate ornominate any financial member of the 4WDCouncil.If required, a ballot of the membershipwill be undertaken to determine thesuccessful candidates.Nominations close midnight on FridayAugust 15, 2008RECOVERY STRAPS GUIDELINESANNOUNCEDRecovery straps are usually a heavy duty nylon or polyesterstrap that can stretch and spring back to its original length. The combination of the recoveryvehicle pull and the tension in the strapcreates a ‘snatching’ effect that canpull a stranded vehicle free from beingbogged or unable to move under itsown power. When used in accordance withthese guidelines, vehicles may berecovered with a minimal injury risk topeople or damage to vehicleequipment.Key information and safetyrecommendationsCheck the strap and its packagingfor the stated Minimum BreakingStrength (MBS).It is recommended that theminimum breaking strength of thestrap should be between two and threetimes the vehicle’s gross vehicle mass(GVM) and the strap must be suited tothe GVM of the lighter of the twovehicles used in the recovery process.Persons intending to use the strapshould consider completing anationally recognised four wheel drivetraining course or contact a four wheeldrive club for comprehensive advice onthe proper selection and use of thestrap. The strap must not be used forlifting or conventional towing.Persons intending to use the strapmust ensure that the strap is notdamaged and is in a usable condition. The strap’s strength and stretch arereduced when the strap is saturated.Something like a recovery damper, heavy bag or blanket must be drapedover the strap during use to reduce anyunintentional rebound of the strap. While the strap is being used, people outside of the motor vehiclesinvolved in the recovery process mustbe kept at a safe distance. The recommended distance is atleast 1.5 times the length of theunstretched strap from either of thevehicles involved in the recoveryprocess. They also must never placethemselves within the path of thevehicle performing the recovery andmust always follow the productinstructions. It is important to correctly attachthe motor vehicle recovery strap to amotor vehicle.A standard tow ball or vehicle tiedownpoint is not designed for thispurpose and may result in the strap ora vehicle component detaching from amotor vehicle and striking and seriouslyinjuring or killing a person.Only attach the strap to a vehiclerecovery point or device that is suitablyrated for use with the strap.Incorrect use has previously resultedin serious injury and death.Only attach the strap toa vehicle recovery pointor device that is suitablyrated for use with the strap.ImportantNever attempt to recover a vehiclewithout all the necessary equipment.Only use equipment that is properlyrated for the particular situation. If in doubt, don’t use it.Never exceed the MinimumBreaking Strength (MBS) of the strapor the Working Load Limit (WLL) ofshackles.Selecting the right recoverystrapIt is very important the correctlyrated strap is used.A strap with a ‘too light’ breakingstrength may break under load.A strap with ‘too heavy’ a breakingstrength may not stretch properly andmore stress will be placed on therecovery points, possibly causingdamage or injury.60 AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 www.aaaa.com.au

4WDThe MBS of the strap should be betweentwo and three times the GVM of the lighterof the two vehicles used in the recoveryprocess.Be aware that the recovery strap will beunder greater load if the vehicle is boggedin mud, sand or heavily loaded. If the GVM is not stated on theidentification plate of a vehicle or itsregistration certificate it could be availablefrom the owner’s handbook or from thevehicle manufacturer.Keeping people safeOnly the drivers of the stranded andrecovery vehicle should be in those vehicles.Nobody else should be in or on thosevehicles.Ensure bystanders stay at least 1.5times the un-stretched strap length away, tothe side of the line of recovery.NEVER stand between vehiclesconnected by a recovery strap.Setting up the recoveryAssess the circumstances of thestranded vehicle. If it has bottomed out, clear under thevehicle body so it rests on its wheels. The recovery vehicle should be placed inline (no more than 10 degrees off thestraight line) with the stranded vehicle, foreither a forward or reverse recoveryoperation. The distance between the vehiclesshould be two to three metres less than theunstretched length of the recovery strap.Establish agreed signals between thevehicle drivers, by radio (preferably), handsignals or vehicle horn.Connecting the recovery strapCarefully inspect the recovery strap todetermine that it is in good condition. If the strap is wet, dirty, cut or chafed, itwill not perform properly.A wet strap may be 20 per cent understrength and a damaged strap may break.Do not allow the strap to contact hotsurfaces or sharp edges.Roll the strap out between the vehicles, and make sure there are no twists and leavetwo to three metres of slack between thevehicles. The joining of straps should be avoidedwherever possible - retailers carry varyinglengths of strap.Never use a metal object to join straps. If the strap breaks it can become amissile and causedamage or injury.Check your vehiclehand book for recoverypoint locations, or usecorrectly rated and fittedaftermarket recoverypoints.Do not connect to atow ball or tie downpoint. For any recoverypoint requiring the useof a shackle to attachthe strap, use only loadrated shackles.Only connect to correctly rated recoverypoints on the vehicles, with only ‘LoadRated’ shackles.Load ratings are marked on shackles asWLL.Bow Shackles are suitable for thispurpose and should be rated at least 3.25t.To correctly tighten shackle pins, screwthe pin until it seats, then back off abouthalf to one turn.Over tightening may lead to seized pins, due to the force exerted during recoveryoperations. To reduce the risk of vehicledamage and personal injury, hang a suitablerecovery damper blanket over the recoverystrap about midway to restrict the whippingaction of a strap should it break. The last thing is check all connectionsand clear bystanders to a safe distance (1.5times the un-stretched recovery straplength) to the side of the recovery operationand NEVER in the line of recovery.Making the recoveryBefore the recovery operation driversmust agree on the point to which thestranded vehicle is to be recovered and thesignal (radio, hand signal or horn blast)when that point is reached. With communications maintainedbetween both vehicles, and the recoverystrap secure, the recovery vehicle shouldgently accelerate, taking up the slack andproceeding at no faster than 10-12kph.For best results the stranded vehicleshould be in first gear (or second low), andthe driver should help the recovery by tryingto drive out approximately three secondsfrom when the recovery vehicle moves off.If the vehicle is not recovered on the firstattempt, check under the stranded vehicle, again, for obstacles, reset the slack in therecovery strap and try a little more speed bythe recovery vehicle.Excessive speed or continual jerkingaction while using a recovery strap mayresult in damage to the recovery point, chassis and drive line of both vehicles. When the stranded vehicle reaches theagreed point, the driver should advise andthe recovery vehicle should stop and thenthe stranded vehicle should stop.Where the proper use of a recovery strapis unsuccessful, use an appropriate sizedrecovery winch.Do not attempt to remove the strap untilboth vehicles are stationary and secured.Recovery straps require rest periodsbetween use to return to their originallength and capacity. Excessive pulls over ashort period of time can cause heat buildup and possible failure.General care and maintenanceNever allow your strap to rub againstsharp or hot surfaces.Avoid twists and kinks after washing andwhen dry, always coil your strap for storage.Clean your strap with warm water and amild detergent, allowing thorough dryingbefore storage.Foreign material such as sand and gritcan permanently damage the strap fibres.Check full length of straps for nicks andcuts before and after use.If damaged, replace it.Never use the strap as a lifting sling.Inspect shackles for damage. If the pins are hard to turn then theshackle has been overstressed so it must bereplaced.CAUTION: Always follow the recoverystrap guidelines for safe useCompiled by the <strong>Australian</strong> 4WD IndustryCouncil in conjunction with the 4WDIndustry to assist the safe use ofrecovery strapsAU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 61

4WD4WD FUEL INCREASES HPLPG converter LP GAS 1 has recently launchedDieselGas 1 to maximise the fuel efficiency and powerof diesel engines, in a breakthrough for 4WD owners. The technology offers turbocharged diesel vehicles a 15 to25 percent increase in powerand a 10 percent reduction infuel use.A 10 to 15 percent increasein power can be expected fornon-turbo vehicles.LP GAS 1 Managing DirectorDamian Arena said it did nottake long to realise the benefitsof the change over.“As there is immediateperformance improvements andfuel cost savings,” he said.“Our technology is state-ofart,so you are guaranteed anexpertly fitted and dyno tunedsystem that will provide apractical solution to the age oldproblem of achieving more withless.”Most vehicles cost as little as$4400 to covert to DieselGas 1.This covers a standardconversion with a single tankand exhaust modification ifrequired. In most 4x4 vehicles, LPGtanks are typically located inplace of the main muffler. In most tray type vehicles,LPG tanks are typically locatedunder the tray.Sold with a three year100,000km warranty, privatelyregistered vehicles are eligiblefor the $2000 governmentrebate.“DieselGas1 is good newsfor diesel motorists and forpeople on the land seeking tomaximise the performance oftheir diesel engines,” Mr Arenasaid.LP GAS 1 says theDieselGas1 fumigates LPGvapour into the intake air-streamto enhance the combustionprocess. The amount of LPG used iscontrolled via a sophisticatedmicroprocessor controlled steppermotor. The optimum ratio is 1 to1.3 litre of LPG to 10 litres ofdiesel fuel.LPG, having a higher flashpoint than diesel, increases theburn rate of the diesel andtherefore provides a morecomplete combustion.By combining the two fuels,a far higher percentage ofbetween 95 and 97 percent ofthe diesel fuel is burnt resultingin increased power, far cleaneremissions, lower exhausttemperatures and improved fuelconsumption. As the technology can betailored to all diesel engines,DieselGas1 can be used forearth moving equipment, stationery engines, primemovers, heavy rigid trucks anddiesel trains.Mr Arena said theseapplications would likelywarrant tax deduction’s forbusiness use.“With so much pressure onthe price of fuel and interest inmaximising the performance oftheir engines, the earlyresponse we’ve got from peopleon the land has beenoutstanding,” he said.“It’s noteworthy that ourresearch shows many womenhave also adopted a keeninterest in the environmentalbenefits of our fuel solution, asblack plume and otheremissions are reduced.“It’s another pragmaticbenefit of DieselGas 1 fordiesel vehicle owners who areoften unfairly targeted when itcomes to emissions.”LP GAS1 is part of theAllomak Limited group. To find out more about theimmediate benefits ofre-powering a diesel engine, call LP GAS 1 on1300 883 660.AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 65

4WDOFF-ROAD SAFETYAustralia’s pipeline construction industry has turned the spotlight onto the health and safety of its workerswith a bold new approach to 4WD driver safety training. The <strong>Australian</strong> Pipeline IndustryAssociation (APIA) proceeded with its offroadsafety training day held in Victoria inJune.“APIA plans to take the Safety FieldDay to other states over the next 12 to 18months, and may ultimately introduce aformal APIA Training Centre for specialisedoff-road driving instruction,” APIA’s safetycommittee Chairman, Mark Twycross, said.“At the moment, most companies offerthis kind of training at the start of theirindividual projects, but we hope tointroduce an industry-wide accreditationprogram to harmonise this training.“This is a must-attend field day for anycompany or business whose employeesdrive in off-road locations.”Call to install ESC devicesMr Twycross said APIA wasdisappointed that four-wheel-drive vehiclemanufacturer Toyota continued to ignorecalls from the sector to install ElectronicStability Control devices (ESC), whichapply braking to individual wheels andgreatly increase vehicle stability, in itsLand Cruiser and Hilux models.“These vehicles are the workhorses ofour industry, but Toyota still refuses toinstall these devices in them, despiteregular appeals from us over the past fouryears, and studies showing that the ESCcan reduce roll-overs by as much as 50percent,” he said.“So the industry has decided to act inorder to help ensure the safety of thepeople working on our construction sites.”Some of the country’s leading roadsafety experts provided advice andguidance to APIA members at the SafetyField Day, which was held at theMelbourne 4X4 Training and ProvingGround at Werribee. This is a must-attend field dayfor any company or businesswhose employees drive inoff-road locationsThe experts included ProfessorRaphael Grzebieta, Chairman of RoadSafety at the University of NSW’s InjuryRisk Management Research Centre andPresident of the Australasian College ofRoad Safety, and Dr Andry Rakotonirainyfrom the Centre for Accident Researchand Road Safety at QueenslandUniversity.Threat of roll-over accidents“Although the pipeline industry has astrong safety record compared to otherconstruction sectors, the adverseconditions in remote locations and thetendency of some drivers to exceed theircapabilities means we are continuallyfacing the threat of roll-over accidents,”Mr Twycross said.“While this will always be a risk, wehave an opportunity to introducemeasures to manage the risk, and we willwork with pipeline owners andconstructors, with vehicle manufacturers, and with State and Federal authorities toimprove safety.“Throughout every sector of the<strong>Australian</strong> pipeline industry, health andsafety is of paramount importance.”Mr Twycross said strong and effectivesafety procedures equate to goodbusiness.“And over recent years APIA has beenproactive in reinforcing this message tothe broader industry,” he said.“One of our major focuses recently hasbeen the promotion of safety within theall-important area of 4WD operations anddriver behaviour at work.”Mr Twycross said the safety trainingday focussed on 4WD safety, including anin-depth look at the advantages of drivingvehicles with ESC over those that don’thave the control.APIA’s Safety Field Day also providedparticipants with an opportunity to testdrive4x4 vehicles, study accidentavoidance techniques and learn how tointegrate safety considerations into theirfleet purchasing and equipping practices.RAW 4WD SHOCKSThe Raw 4x4 team has just released itsnew four inch raised shock absorbers forthe Toyota Landcruiser 80 and 105series and will soon follow suit for theNissan GU and GQ Patrol. The shock absorbers will be part of the Raw Nitro Max range with a large41mm bore and a massive 70mm body for maximum oil capacity. This design has survived in some of the harshest conditions in Australiaand Africa. For more information, call Powerdown on 02 4949 0000 or visit the websitewww.raw4x4.com.au66 AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 www.aaaa.com.au

4WD4WD BRAKE PADSBendix 4WD disc brake pads come with the promise of“on road feel, off road tough”.For experienced 4WD outback racer,Jason Forssman, the Bendix assurance hascertainly proved accurate.Along with his ‘Team Jaffa’ racingpartner, Jeff Redman, Mr Forssman hasbeen consistently impressed by theperformance of Bendix 4WD brake pads, since fitting them to the duo’ssupercharged and heavily modifiedcompetition vehicle, a 1992 FordMaverick.Since then, they have pushed theirMaverick to the limits in some of thenation’s toughest 4WD competitions, including the <strong>Australian</strong> OutbackChallenge and the Ateco Winch Challenge.“In competition conditions, theperformance of the Bendix 4WD brakepads has been sensational,” Mr Forssmansaid.“We have complete confidence thatwhen we want to stop, we can stop.”Stopping the Maverick is certainly a tallorder in rugged, outback environments, with the vehicle weighing about 2.4tonnes when fully loaded and fuelled, butthe Bendix 4WD brake pads continuallyperform despite heat, water, mud orextreme dust. The pads helped contribute to Jasonand Jeff’s performance, including a stagewin, in last year’s <strong>Australian</strong> OutbackChallenge.Part of the challenge is a nightnavigation, which Mr Forssman likens to“orienteering in the dark”.“In a 100 square metre bushlandpaddock just outside Broken Hill, we have10 GPS points to find, but no idea what’sbetween those points,” he said.“We’ll routinely be doing 130kph to140kph in the absolute dark and need tostop in a real hurry.”Mr Forssman says Bendix 4WD brakepads bite hard with less pedal effort, allowing him to pull up his vehicle even inthe most testing circumstances.Bendix 4WD brake pads continuallyperform again and again despite heat, water, mud or extreme dust.“In competitions, we routinely brake athigh speed in extreme conditions,” hesaid.“We might be on our front wheelsalone, going down a 45 degree slope, ornavigating a slippery, rocky creek bed.“To brake in such situations, we need apad that will perform regardless of water, mud, dust, dirt or temperature.”Mr Forssman’s confidence in Bendix4WD brake pads extends to his dailydriving.“My tow car, an 80 series LandCruiser,is fitted with Bendix 4WD brake pads, andso is my wife’s GQ Patrol,” he said.We have complete confidencethat when we want to stop,we can stop“I trust the pads and I know they’rereliable in all conditions, so they’re perfectfor city or suburban driving as well as foroutback competitions.”Bendix 4WD brake pads feature aunique Bendix Titanium Stripe that givesthe 4WD pads instant friction withoutbedding-in.Epoxy-modified Phenolic Resin (EPR)holds the friction material matrix togetherat both high and low temperatures, giving4WD pads their structural integrity andimproved strength, enhancing brakingperformance under extreme conditions.Grooves in the front pads help to expelwater, dust or dirt that comes into contactwith the pad during off-road use.For more information visitwww.bendix.com.au free call theBendix Brake Advice Centre on1800 819 666 (8am-5pm Mondayto Friday EST) or email Bendix atbrakeadvicecentre@bendix.com.au78 AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 www.aaaa.com.au

4WDSAFARI DRE<strong>AM</strong> COMES TRUE FOR SARAHNew Zealander Sarah Twaddle is set to become just the 12th female driver to evertackle the Australasian Safari when she takes her Mitsubishi Evolution Pajero to thestart line in Kalgoorlie on August 23.While eight woman have entered the event on a bike and otherwoman have been co-drivers, Twadle will become part of a smallclub to tackle Australia's most gruelling motorsport event. The chance to take part in her first Australasian Safari is a dreamcome true for the Kiwi.Twaddle and co-driver, Damian Grahame, will be part of a two-carteam, with the second car driven by Jason Pearce, with Sarah'sfather, Brent Twaddle, in his navigator's seat. The team will have fivepeople following the rally to service both the cars and the crews. While the concept of spending spare time among the ruggedness, dust and mud of an off-road rally in outback Australia may seemextreme for most, the Christchurch twenty-five-year-old can't wait."I have been following the Australasian Safari since my fatherbecame involved with helping run and organise this great event," MsTwaddle said."The two of us always dreamed that we would one day do thisevent together as a father-daughter team, but I never thought itwould be with me driving in one vehicle and him navigating inanother."Twaddle has competed as a navigator in the last two 'Condo 750'rallies in outback New South Wales, so competition isn't new to her."I have been brought up on motorsport from a very early age, withmy parents organising New Zealand's biggest off-road rally inOmarama and Twizel (in the South Island) for many years."However, driving in this style of event will present a completelynew experience for Twaddle. She will be behind the wheel of arecently imported Mitsubishi Evolution Pajero in the AustralasianSafari and compete in the A1-1 Production 4X4 class. While the vehicle is only lightly modified, it will have all the safetyequipment fitted, including a full six-point roll cage. CompetitionProflex suspension is also being installed by the Sydney-based RooRacing team. The two of us always dreamed that we would oneday do this event together as a father-daughter team, but I never thought it would be with me driving in onevehicle and him navigating in another.Whether you're a male or a female, competing in an arduous eventlike the Australasian Safari is hard work, and competitors face manychallenges along the way. For Twaddle, her biggest challenge will begetting used to the Pajero."I will only see the car the day before the rally, so I won't knowhow it handles," she says. "The first couple of days we will just gosteady and pick the pace up as the event goes on. The WA sand willbe a challenge too, as we have nothing like it in New Zealand."The next biggest challenge is that I am gluten sensitive, and itwill be interesting trying to find a good meal."The goal of getting to the finish will be paramount for Twaddleacross the seven days of competition."In this kind of event the first goal is always to finish. But mostly,it is about showing everyone that a female can compete with theboys, and keep up with them - especially a New Zealand female, who works front-line in a hotel everyother day."It's likely that Twaddle will beat manyof her male counterparts in the event aswell, something she often achieves whenracing go-karts back home in NewZealand. Before she can celebrate such a feat, however, there are sevendays of driving and around3000 kilometers ofcompetitive stages tocontend with.Starting in Kalgoorlie onSaturday, August 23, theAustralasian Safari isexpected to attract a strongfield of competitors. Afterleaving the gold miningtown, it visits Sandstone,Meekatharra, Mt Magnet and Geraldton, before finishing in Perth onSaturday, August 30.AU T O M O T I V E A F T E R M A R K E T M AG A Z I N E AU G U ST 2 0 0 8 81

PRTCNEW CROW C<strong>AM</strong>S GM 6 AND V8CONICAL VALVE SPRING PACKAGESOne of the common dilemmas for builders of performance streetHoldens and Chev Small blocks is the desire to run camshafts withhigh lift being restricted by the need to run double valve springsand the associated expense, time and hassles involved inmachining cylinder heads to suit the bigger valve springs. Now Crow Cams have a solution utilizing their range of highperformance conical ovate wire valve springs and specially designedsuper-light chrome moly retainers to suit 0.343” valve stems andseven-degree valve locks. The conical spring design is well proven in many late model enginesmost notably the GM LS1 where conical springs are regularly used oncams between 0.550” and 0.600” lift at relatively high RPMs withoutstanding reliability and resistance to pressure loss. The “beehive” spring design combined with the small lightweightretainer resists valve float better than traditional straight spring/retainercombinations giving greater RPM potential. The standard O-ring sealwill not fit with this combination. You can choose positive guide fitstem seals or a Falcon umbrella seal is also satisfactory. The valve train weight saving in the retainer alone is significant withthe new Crow conical chrome moly retainer weighing a mere 11 gramscompared to a double spring chrome moly equivalent at 27 grams.Even Titanium double spring retainers are substantially heavier at 17to 19 grams. Two conical spring and retainer packages to suit Holden and ChevV8 and one for the Holden straight six are available. For more information call Crow Cams on 03 9357 0469 oremail sales@crowcams.com.auAN OIL TO HELP YOU SLIDELeading blender of <strong>Australian</strong> made lubricants, Gulf WesternOil has developed an oil to meet the demanding needs of theincreasingly popular motorsport of drift racing. No strangers to the world of racing,Gulf Western Oil has enjoyed a longassociation with <strong>Australian</strong>motorsport, competing in the<strong>Australian</strong> Touring Car Challenge andsupporting teams in the V8 Supercarseries and Group One Drag Racing. Its latest offering is a pair ofengine oils tailored to the highrevving, severe wear nature of driftand circuit racing.
